pipesandcigars.com South Vacherie

(3.40)
The Perique from South Vacherie has a distinct espresso character supported by herbal notes. The spice in this varietal is like white pepper – lively but subdued. This might be the most complex of the four versions. With the base tobaccos being relatively neutral, those characteristics are more noticeable in this entry to the Golden Triangle Series.
Notes: The Golden Triangle Series of pipe tobaccos is a showcase for some very rare versions of St. James Perique. Mark Ryan, of L.A. Poche Perique Company decided one year to put up a barrel of Perique from each of the four growing regions of St. James' Golden Triangle, rather than mixing them together for processing. This experiment created four distinctly different versions of Perique. In the Golden Triangle Series, Russ Ouellette has created a base blend that is used in the four regional mixtures that allows you to be able to see the difference in the flavor of the singular Perique varietals. To round out the series, Mark has allowed us to offer a tin of straight St. James Perique (as opposed to the usual Acadian Perique), the first time that pure St. James has been offered to the public in many years.

The base of Burley and Virginia is indeed somewhat neutral and doesn't infringe on the flavor of the Perique at all. I do get a mild nuttiness from the Burley and a touch of hay from the Virginia. There is a mild sweetness that seems to come from both. The Perique, as designed, is the star of the show. It does have a dark espresso/coffee like flavor. I can't detect any fruitiness or herbal notes. The spice is ample yet gentle giving no distress to the throat or nasal passages. I find this to be a pure pleasure to smoke and I think I may be getting a little addicted to it. Perfect moisture straight from the tin. No drying time needed. A wonderful smoke.

Medium in body and taste. No added flavorings. Burns very well, in fact, a bit quick without getting hot.

Sweet and smooth with just a touch of pepper. A wonderful, easy-burning blend. Good, quality Burley. The perfect amount of perique. I'm loving this blend. Thanks Russ!
