G. L. Pease Invasion
(4.00)
While running past Hanger 18 during the Air Force Marathon on Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, I spotted a silver metallic box gleaming from behind a large bush. I sent the box to the underground laboratories of G.L. Pease where its contents were analyzed to reveal an other-worldly pipe weed resembling a rich, full latakia mixture with a high percentage of flue-cured leaf, as well as other unidentifiable, previously unknown varieties of exceptional smoothness. After months of exhaustive qualitative testing, only enough of this alien treasure remained to produce 125 tins of two ounces each.

I picked up a few tins of Invasion and finally popped open the top of one of them and am glad that I did. A sweet and pungent Latakia presence dominated at the nose and at the match. Typical well aged Virginia with depth galore hung in there throughout the smoke and the Latakia was whispering with its soft, smoky breath as well. I wish this was a regular staple in the Pease lineup!

I don't usually review our NASPC year blends, as they are a very limited production and are quickly dispersed into the pipe smoking market and only show up occasionally for sale - usually at much elevated prices, no less. At our 2016 show we had two half pound containers available for sampling (the other blend being Night Wraith) and I took a sample of each that turned out to fill two pipes of each.. When I lit the first one of Invasion, I knew two things immediately: one, this was one of the most flavorful and satisfying medium English blends that I had smoked in a long time and, two, I was regretful that my sample was as small as it was! Greg Pease has hit the center of the target with this one. The smoking joy here is not the Latakia, which is adequate but not overly strong, but is in the fine balance of the quality Virginias and Orientals. The smoothness of the smoke, the well balanced tastes blended expertly and the subtle richness are what elevates this blend to four star status. All of this accomplished in , yet, another medium English blend in the very crowded top of the bell-shaped curve of English blends. Well done Greg - four enthusiastic stars and I would give it five, if I could.
