pipesandcigars.com Perique Blend P-37

(3.33)
The Paulina region perique has an earthy, slightly sour and peppery character, with a hint of coffee noticeable in the retrohale. Russ combined this with sweet Virginias and some unflavored black cavendish to bring out the best properties of this varietal for RO Series Perique Blend P-37.

The various Virginias offer some tangy citrus with a fair amount of grass and hay, and forms the base of the blend. The spicy, woody, earthy, lightly smoky and sour Paulina perique also has very mild plum and coffee characteristics as an important supporting player. The sugar from the unflavored black cavendish adds a smoothing quality in the background. The strength and taste levels are just short of medium. The nic-hit is a hair below the mild to medium threshold. Won’t bite or get harsh, but has a hint of a rough edge here and there. Burns cool, clean, slightly fast with a very consistent mildly sweet and savory, peppery, well balanced flavor which translates to the after taste. Easily burns to ash. Leaves little moisture in the bowl. Needs an average number of relights. Not quite an all day smoke, but experienced VaPer smokers may consider it to be one. Three and a half stars.

Pipesandcigars.com - Perique Blend P-37 (RO Series).

Rather coarse ribbons, mainly browns/light browns with just a few black specks and although the seal 'hissed' the moisture's a little low. It smells Perique-like but not too harsh.

The slight dryness helped it take to the flame with ease. Sadly, this causes it to burn a touch quickly. That's the negative point dealt with. Now, the flavour? Nice. At the start of a bowl the Perique is more subdued, with the frondescent, hay-like Virginia taking a bigger stance. After about a third the Perique livens up and a kind of white pepper flavour enters, giving a 'whack' of sharp spice. I find the Black Cavendish very 'lazy'; sure, it lends a calming touch, but isn't in the same league as the other two! Although, like I said, it burns quite quick, I have no complaints about tongue bite!

Nicotine: medium. Room-note: not nice.

P-37? Although it burns a touch zealously, I'll happily recommend it:

Three stars.
