It is almost impossible to smoke this without comparing it to Balkan Sobranie. However, I will do my best to review it on its own merits.
Balkan Sasieni is a ribbon cut balkan blend available in 50g packages, 200g tins, and bulk. My sample was bulk. Moisture level was acceptable and it dries readily if left out to air. The blend itself is medium to dark leaf in a ribbon cut that packs easily.
Being an oriental based balkan, the sweetness level is fairly low and the emphasis is on spicy and nutty flavors, as well as the aromas associated with the tobacco, including the substantial latakia content. I found that this had very good smoking characteristics and a complexity that developed nicely in the bottom half of the bowl, particularly after letting sit for a while. The complexity is different than in blends with a higher sugar content, as it is due to the subtler spicy elements rather than the stoving of the VAs in the bowl.
This is a very nice balkan in its own right and makes for an enjoyable smoke when a the palate calls for a drier, rather than sweeter, tobacco.
