Low Country Pipe & Cigar Guendalose
(3.40)
Along the historic Waccamaw River, roughly five miles inland from the coast of rural South Carolina, and just downstream of Brookgreen Island, lies a quiet, remote creek by the name of Guendalose. On quiet summer nights, it offers locals a much-needed bit of solitude, and countless moments of quiet reflection.
Paying tribute to this secluded creek, and to those moments of gentle respite, we have selected choice Red and Bright Virginias, our own Red Virginia Cavendish, fine Katerini Turkish leaf, a dash of spicy Perique, and exquisite cigar leaf to fashion a blend that readily evokes the flavors of a full-bodied, Nicaraguan cigar.

Tin note of mildly pungent, sugared raisins and tangy hay. Tobacco is a Ribbon of reddish brown, tan and dark brown. Moisture content is great. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of leather, very woody, musty vegetation, floral, very spicy cigar, herbal spices, bready, fig, sugar, tangy plums, lemon citrus, rich earth, dry, sweet grass, orange peel/zest, slight acidic, a semi-sweet nutty background note, and a very peppery retro. Cigar barely takes the lead from the Virginias with Oriental/Turkish and Perique supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great.

Having been a cigar smoker in the past, I must say that no pipe tobacco can fully capture the experience and flavour of a cigar. After trying several cigar leaf blends such as Havana Daydream and Key Largo, I can confidently say Guendalose is as close as it gets. This tobacco has a fuller body that is far more reminiscent of a cigar than I expected. The flavour is bold and woody, the key competent is the cigar leaf instead of it being used as a condiment. The other tobaccos play mild supporting roles adding some complexity to the blend, mainly offering additional layers of woodiness. The Red Virginia cavendish makes the smoke very thick adding to the cigar-feeling you get from this blend. The perique is especially minimal here, so there is no overpowering pepperiness on the retrohale. If you have been looking for blend that offers the flavour of a cigar, then look no further. The only point it loses is for not being higher in nicotine strength, which takes away from the potential it has to feel like a cigar. I might mix in some HH Rustica and see what happens. I'll give this a 3.5/4 and round that up to a 4.
