Sutliff's version of Rum and Maple. The ideal mixture of Virginia and burley is combined with warm, sweet maple and the subtle tones of rum. A great smoke for any time of the day or night.

The maple is a tad more obvious than the rum, and the toppings do tone down the tobaccos a lot. There's no artificialness or syrup to the toppings. You do get a little grass and tart and tangy citrus from the Virginia. The nutty, earthy, woody burley takes a little of the lead over the Virginia. The strength is mild, while the taste is around the center of mild to medium. Has little nicotine. Won't bite, but does have light rough edge from the burley. Burns clean and fairly cool at a moderate pace with a very consistent flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a very pleasant, lightly lingering after taste and room note, and is an all day smoke.

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Rum & Maple.

The pouch smells heavier with maple, the rum is borderline unnoticeable. The ribbons are quite delicate, and mine arrived too damp.

The smoke: just like in the un-lit note, the maple is far stronger than the rum, this, is right down the scale. Of the two tobaccos' I get far more from the Burley compaired to the Virginia. As a bowl burns the maple gets louder, but sadly the same can't be said for the rum; it's very mild for the whole journey. The smoke's cool, bite free and it's actually pretty thick. Rum and Maple burns well, if anything it goes a bit too quickly.

The nicotine's mild and the room-note's good.

This is a great quality aromatic:

Highly recommended.

Yummy Goodness!!! That's all I can say. The maple is the main flavor here and even though I never had a rum flavored tobacco that I liked , the rum comes off second to the maple and is in no way overpowering. A simple smoke that makes me want to find St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast and stay awhile. Highly recommended!

Tin note was a nice natural rum and maple but is not as strong as some other Maple offerings. Perfect humidity in that it the tobacco is supple but not sticky. Burns well from the second light from the torch. Burley is dominant from beginning to end leaving a good chesnut flavor with some nice maple through the nose on exhale. Very nice full tobacco flavor. The Virginia in this seems to be a background support player. Inevitably, a comparison to Maple street will be asked. I just polished off my last tin of Maple street purchased 9 years ago. Maple street from about 2010-2011 was strongly Virginia forward with Burley support while this one is opposite. Rum & Maple is just as good, and the Burley forward is actually what I wanted tonight. An all day smoke, but particularly enjoyable with a dram of cognac after dinner.

Good tobacco. No bite to it and smokes really cool. There's a good (and light) flavoring to it, and I can attest that it tastes somewhat like maple, since I'm from the land of the maple syrup (Quebec,Canada). The taste is not overhelming,by my opinion, so it would make a great everyday tobacco for the aromatic's lover.

Having had Vermont maple syrup on the french toast this morning, I can certify that this blend is exactly right when it comes to that wondrful flavor. My supply was bulk, cellared for 12 months, with the moisture exactly right, normal relights, and maintained a consistent flavor with a very pleasant room note. Highly recommended.

I never had the original Rum & Maple so this review is on the merits of the Sutliff Rum & Maple itself.

Receiving this for Father's day I opened the package and was met by a Light Maple and Light Rum aroma with a touch of an earthy and woody background. The tobacco seemed to be slightly moist so I put it on a paper towel for an hour.

The tobacco is a very long ribbon cut and it burned very evenly, medium pace, lit easily and had a wonderful thick smoke that gave a very, very pleasant room note that reminded those who smelled it of pancakes with maple syrup on them. This burned down to a dark ash, had very infrequent re-lights. I do feel this one could cause a tongue tingle if pushed and found it gave a pleasant taste when sipped slowly. I would suggest using a shallow wide bowl for the long, long ribbons would pack better in a bowl like that.

Upon lighting I tasted light rum and a very light taste of Maple. The rum seemed to slightly overshadow the Maple the whole smoke. The two main stars, Rum and Maple were supported by the pleasant and very light flavors of grass, a slightly tart and slightly tangy citrus, lightly earthy and a touch of wood with an appearance of roasted chestnuts dancing in and out of the picture. The flavors seemed to play well. Throughout the whole smoke Rum seemed to lead and it seemed to grow in dominance a bit toward the end of the bowl. The aftertaste was of a slightly sweet rum with a touch of maple throughout the whole smoke and after it was done the maple flavor in the very long aftertaste was a pleasant addition to the rum aftertaste. For many this could be a all day smoke. For me the Rum makes it a once a day smoke.

As always a Sutliff product has come through in making a pleasurable smoke. I like this tobacco. I have to admit that RUM is not my choice in alcohol flavors but this is pleasant. I like this a lot and will probably smoke it on special occasions and will try it in different pipes to see how the flavors react in them. This could make it into my regular rotation. Would buy again. My only wish is it would've had more maple flavoring. The room note is one of the best I ever have smelled. 3.3 out of 4 stars

UPDATE- After three months of being Jarred I smoked this in my Weber Shellbrooke Prince and what a change. The Maple flavor has deepened and this was like eating a maple syrup covered pancake with the maple really coming forward with the rum receding a bit and the smoke being more mellow and more sweet. A Delicious and a wonderful smoke with a wonderful light aftertaste. Upped to a 3.8 star rating.

Well, you may not be hankering for a Cuba Libra served up with a warm flapjack, but I guarantee the thought will enter your mind with an initial tasting of this one. Entering ala the Tobacco Galleria collection, from the country’s oldest operating manufacturer, Sutliff Tobacco serves up the classic Rum & Maple for your piping enjoyment. A traditional aromatic recipe of choice Burleys paired with a complementing volume of Virginian tastefully marinated in polarizing compote of hardy rum and sugared maple flavorings of course.

Upon opening the pre-packaged envelope of tobacco, I surveyed a slightly moist collection of coarsely cut fragments of rich White and Dark Burleys interlaced with fine shaggy wisps of ribbon appearing to be an assortment of Bright and what I deem as stoved Virginia. Predominantly chocolate hued with indications of a notable degree of fermented darkening, Rum & Maple projects a good-natured façade of quality varietals. Incidentally you can purchase this in bulk form and it’s a darn sight cheaper.

Frankly the pouched perfume on this mixture is hands-down alluring. My senses were enticed by the lovely sugary maple blast that pitches freely from the open bag, even at a reasonable distance. Behind this wonderful air, the registration endows a gentle distant tang overridden by a clean, noteworthy wave of natural Burley. Additional garnishment shines through with a distinct note of alcohol spice, and interestingly a masking of chocolate although this in not one of the official profiled constituents. Perhaps an illusion created by the confluence of all the other additives and anonymous casings, but that is what I acknowledged?

Now that I have smoked an honest share of trial bowls, in my qualified and measured opinion this is a well-contrived recipe. Essentially the featured rum and maple top-coatings are appropriately balanced and play off each other quite deliciously. The harmoniously fusion of these two contrasting ingredients is complete and seamlessly smooth; an impressive blending achievement to say the least. In effect, Rum & Maple yields a pleasant aromatic smoking experience that is medium strengthen-medium intensity in temperament.

At times the delectable maple additive does dominate the presentation overall, but the rum chase tenaciously hangs tight on the perimeter of the forward taste band. With the maple the notation is excitingly dense and substantial. It characterizes as a splendid buttery mesh enveloping nuances of caramel, brown sugar, and molasses evolving into exquisitely potent goodness of flavor. If you favor the wonderful taste of Vermont syrup, then you this one will most likely put a smile on your face. On the rum note, a classic feel of Jamaican hooch brings about a character of misty sweetness combined with the musty edged spice of an alcohol condiment.

Equally significant, the native Burley stands in consistent company on the baseline offering elements of toasty, cultured wood, seasoned nuttiness, and a dash of cocoa; well played Sutliff. This accompaniment is quite notable, bringing an enhancing fullness to the body of flavor throughout the smoking session. As for the Virginia it essentially surfaces as a weaker but obliging complement laying low with a bit of tangy citrus and subdued grassy notes. It did however seem to evince stronger remarking through a cob versus the briar pipe. With that exception, I found inclusively that the tobacco held faithfully true to the described flavor profile to the very end.

In terms of basic mechanical features, Rum & Maple endowed a polished and agreeably mellow character for a standard aromatic. The overall texture of the smoke is creamy and substantially pleasant. One minor observation of note, the rum topping does give a little mid-tongue piercing if smoked too aggressively. Yet, in practical terms this is an easy smoking all-day mixture, and it does effectively represent itself as a nice finishing treat to a hearty meal just for the record.

With the exhausted tobaccos the room chamber is embraced with pleasant sweetness. A comforting aroma of sugary maple Burley woodiness encircles the perimeter accented by some tempered zest. The blue-gray clouds of smoke produced are naturally thick and meaty, a respectable contender for blowing rings as that seems to be in high fashion lately on the various FB groups it seems. Additionally, the Burley dominance helps this blend to be well contained in terms of generated heat, yet the nicotine threshold seems quite docile in its overall effects.

I like it for its objective merits and subjective appeal! The sad thing is this particular Sutliff product had been on my target list for well over a year. In the chance discovery with this trialing, I should be kicking myself for not seizing the opportunity to indulge sooner. Being principally a non-aromatic enthusiast, I standardly keep a limited rotation of aromatics in my coffer of regulars, but tell you what, Rum & Maple is definitely a keeper. If my humble accounting strikes a chord of interest, then I suggest you give it go and see if you concur. 3.5 pipes.

I'm not a fan of aromatics. Ironically, I always buy aromatics in the hope that they won't displease me. Recently, for example, I tried Molto Doce -- I didn't like it. I decided to do one last experiment: I bought two Sutliff aromatics bulks, one of them being Rum & Mapple. What tobacco my friends, WHAT TOBACCO! Amazing! It is a balanced VaBur, without tongue-biting or any trace of flavoring chemistry....it looks like it was picked from a Virginia plant that was irrigated with rum and cured with Mapple....the burley is full-bodied, with a creamy smoke that fills the mouth -- and makes us think of eating a delicious pancake on a cold morning. A perfect burning for a great cut. Do not demand relights. A GREAT VaBur with a gentle reminder of some aromatic -- perfect. Finally, my search is over: I found my favorite aromatic blend. Note: 4 stars

I bought this as an add-on to a larger bulk order, mostly because of the maple, and style strength suggested.

Mostly ribbon, with some larger, ripped up leaf. The tin note is maple mostly with a whiff of dark rum. It’s not a strong tin note, but it is pleasant and smells tasty. It came a bit wet, which I’m coming to expect from sutliff. It packs well, and takes a few chars to get going. It burns well, with some relights towards the bottom. The flavor is natural, the maple stands out more to me than the rum. The rum is there, as support to keep the sweetness down a tad. The maple is very much maple sugar flavor. The flavor is consistent, in the medium range, the nic is ok, not strong like I figured. The tobacco flavor is not absent, and seems to be good quality for a bulk aromatic. The burley is forward, and a nice nutty, chocolate variety. The Virginia is not very noticeable, and I don’t notice any of the normal lemony or otherwise citrusy tastes associated with it.

This is a well done aromatic blend. It can be a bit overly sweet at moments, but it’s not soggy in the bowl. It definitely gets a high wife approval rating. I like autumn evening, and this reminds me of that. Could be an all day for some, I prefer it while lounging with a coffee or hot cocoa.
