Sutliff - Fox and Hound

This is an American blend that falls flat, the English is mild and the added topping is subdued by the smokiness and although on occasion comes thru is underwhelming.

Another gift from the in-laws for Christmas. I am not sure what the difference between this blend and the tobacco galleria is as sutliff makes both.

Citrus mostly lemon flavor, sour oriental and Latakia is how I surmise this. I think I will just have to come to the conclusion that American blends are not exactly what I expect they are just like aromatics.

So of the hand full of reviews, I find that I had a rather different experience. First, the good stuff. VA's are slightly tangy with dark fruit notes. These form a light base that are more felt in the background but do occasionally move forward with the lat. The lat. has a woody note but is only slightly smokey. The Burley is a little nutty and slightly earthy and becomes a little more forward as the bowl moves past the half way mark. The Turkish has a slight sour note. The perique is noticeable at times with a very light spice note but oddly not plumb or figs for me. All this is very mild and would make a nice morning smoke. That is if you can get around the topping/casing. It is fruity and mild which I suppose would be okay but there is a sweetener added too and it is so sweet it is cloying. The PG or whatever they used to keep the moisture level high is very present and drying time is quite long. Finally, the crowning achievement of this blend is to earn the rare claim from me that it will bite and bite it does. Smoking slow will not change this I cannot avoid it in Churchwardens nor does changing how I pack the bowl help. All these elements combine to make a smoke that makes my ask why each time I put a match to it. I have not and will not finish my sample.

This blend has quite a unique pouch aroma. When you get past the smoky Latakia, There is a sour "cheesy" aroma which I'm sure it is coming from the perique. It's not not off putting at all, it's just different.

There are some very long ribbons in this blend, 4 to 5 inches long, variable sizes throughout. Not many stems and unsmokeable pieces.

Packs well! Moisture content is slightly on the moist side, but its definitely smokable on arrival. Moisture has zero impact on lighting. this lights well, and stays lit.

I usually smoke 2oz of a blend before I write a review. I want to try different pipes, different times of day, etc. You get the point. But this one seems the same no matter what. This blend was very uninteresting. Although it seems sharp and ashy, the flavor falls flat. No complexity, and I taste none of the alleged fruit topping. Did get a slight case of tongue bite as well.

Maybe some age may change this blend, so I'll revisit in 6 months or so. For now, 1.5 stars.
