GQ Tobaccos Peak Park
(3.60)
First up we have to admit GQ Tobaccos didn't create this, even though we wish we had! This is the second creation from UKTPC's (UK Pipe Tobacco Club) leader Robin Kimberley, and it's another stunner!
Built on a foundation of mixed black cavendish, one part aromatic and the other a powerful British style based on dark fired. A little grassy Virginia, and some spicy and creamy Turkish Izmir. To finish it off, a good dose (13%) of perique has been added.

In the pouch, Peak Park smells more like an aromatic with a touch of dark fired, but in the pipe, it’s another story. The stronger scent of the Cavendish in the pouch gives way to the Perique and dark fired in the pipe. The Cavendish plays a much lesser role in providing some underlying sweetness. PP offers up a large volume of smoke, and I would tend to point to that rather than creaminess, but I think that could easily be argued. The heavy dose of Perique offers the pepper and the dark fired is woody and a little bit smoky. The Virginia’s are more straw (not in a bad way) than grass. During the first two bowls, I found myself chasing the sweet Cavendish a bit, which wasn’t the wisest choice. The spice component of this blend is very prominent and borders on a bite rather than just spice. But with the proper cadence, the flavor is bold and somewhat complex. Peak Park is a not a blend for new smokers IMHO and not a blend for lovers of straight aromatics. It is medium in strength at the beginning, but moves to strong rather quickly if not taken slowly (always a challenge for me). PP is a very tasty blend for sure, but the spice component is a little more than I would prefer.

I have now smoked all of the GQ blends (that I know of), and Peak Park was not really at the top of the list. I think the combination of Izmer and Perique in a blend is not a good one as they present, in combination, too much spice. The Virginia was grassy sweet and held off the Izmer/Perique combo somewhat, and the Cavendish added just enough body to make its presence know. Overall, a somewhat stout wooly bugger!
