Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture
(3.45)
Another Samuel Gawith original, Skiff is for the pipe smoker who appreciates the fuller flavour of an Oriental blend. Blending a variety of different styles of flue cured tobaccos gives Skiff its characteristic yellow and brown features. Its real identity comes with the addition of Turkish and a beautiful black Cyprus latakia giving the blend its full, round taste.

A soft blend, ideal for beginners in natural tobaccos. The orientals have a lot of preponderance and there is a great balance between Latakia and Virginia that shine at times

There are so many reviews here about this tobacco that I don't think I can add anything else. They say it looks like Squadron and I think it's true, although it's been months since I've smoked it and I don't have such a good memory. On the other hand, I can say that I liked Squadron more, among other things because of its greater butteriness, something that I love in tobaccos.
On the other hand, it had been a long time since a tobacco stung my tongue, but with Squadron Leader the same thing happened to me at the beginning and it ended up being one of my favorites. This issue was resolved after the tin had been open for a few days. I think it's a good idea to dry them a bit (without going overboard), since they work better, not only by facilitating combustion, but also because it eliminates biting of the tongue. Smoky, slightly buttery (sometimes) and slightly spicy.
The best: if you smoke Skiff Mixture on a night when the stars align, you won't miss any other English blend. The worst: That doesn't happen every night...

Samuel Gawith Skiff Mixture- Same kind of vibe I get with SL but Skiff definitely showcases the Oriental - Turkish tobaccos More .There is a lot going on here with a mild buttery sweetness and herbal spice . Savory tart and floral . A little incense combined with the Latakia .There are some citrus notes in the background. Very little sweetness in this blend . The Virginias do pop in at times though . The flavor changes a lot during the smoke session . Not my favorite Oriental blend but it is enjoyable. I would probably buy again but I like SL better . 3

I've got it!! After a few years i came back to Skiff and found what I was looking for. A so much refined english/oriental and even with a little nic. Skiff has a very flowery sweet taste I have never come across so far. There is enough latakia but it is so perfectly woven in the blend so it comes never upfront in a brash way. The orientals are top notch and almost minty . The style of this blend is unique and comparable at best to Squadron Leader , which is in the same style just louder, because of darker and stronger virginias. I am a big fan of Standard Mixture as a reviewer here and agree Skiff to be very similar. I recommend smoking Skiff as the first pipe of a day in order to enjoy all subtle flavours Skiff have to offer. Skiff is my favorite so far when it comes to englisch/oriental

Skiff Mixture is a splendidly balanced blend of components; some Latakia but not too much; oriental forward, if anything, consistent; slow-burning, clean and delicious. It\'s little like Squadron Leader, but with a little more punch to it. I didn\'t find that it was unduly moist or needed a large number of relights; though most things are improved by a little drying time. Very highly rcommended. Among English mixtures, possibly second only to My Mixture 965.

First impressions: I love a mild to medium bodied English with Oriental being the prominent leaf. This is right up my alley and reminds me in some ways of EMP and Presbyterian. It's a nice well blended mild English. Lots of Oriental and Virginia leaf in the mixture. Very smooth, creamy mouth feel. The Oriental is sweet, woody, mild and herbal.

This blend is interesting.when you open it you get a nice combination of latakia, spicyness woods and earth.packs well lights ok.the flavours are well balanced between latakia (sweet woods spices)and the virginia flavours.the orientals come out more than other compoments.burns from mid to hot and the tastes combine well.a bit moist is left at the end of the bowl.not recomended for an all day smoke.the nic level is mid to high.a good blend to relax you after launch with a cup of coffee.is it a must try?well you can try it out won't disappoint you but wo't give you the unique smoking experience also.

I consider Skiff Mixture to be the 'Oriental brother' of Squadron Leader. More oriental-forward, more spicy but a little bit less well balanced. Anyway, a must-try tobacco! 4,0/5 in my personal rating system.

Leaf: Ribbon cut in a fairly even mix of light, medium and dark brown tobacco. A nice thickness to the ribbons, mine was a nice wetness out of the tin.
Tin Aroma: Opening the tin, I was first met with a good hit of that rich, campfire like latakia smell. After opening up the paper and putting my nose closer for a deeper inhale, I noticed the sweetness and spiciness of the Virginia and Orientals, which balanced well with the Lat aroma I got at first. It smells like it will be a very rich smoke.
Taste: After lighting up, my first mouthful was dominated by the Latakia, it was lovely and smokey, I have been on VaPers and VA's for a few weeks so this was a good welcome back. From there on I noticed the Latakia make it's way to the rear, really only that first mouthful was domianted by it. What replaced it was a beautifully sweet and somewhat spicy smoke, still very rich and creamy, and extremely smooth. The balance of flavor here is great, everything works together well, the orientals at the front bringing the complex and spicy taste, the VA's keeping things sweet, and the Latakia in the background giving it some solid backing and tying everything together with that rich, dark, smokey flavor. The taste changed back and forth gently throughout the bowl, with the sweetness and spiciness taking turns at the front, but the overall smoke always remaining full of rich fantastic flavor, the latakia always reminding you it is there with a gentle whiff of that creamy dark smokiness intertwined in the smoke. The orientals are the Heroes here throughout though. The taste is fantastic on the retrohale, with no burn, the spiciness can give you a pleasant little tingle. This is not a shallow smoke, it doesn't get boring, it kept me raising my eyebrows at it's subtle changes all the way to the end of the bowl, where you are left with little else but some fine white ash. I was also left with a great sweet aftertaste in my mouth after my bowl for around 15 minutes.
Smokeability: Moisture was fine out of the tin for me, it packed easily and lit well with a single match. It barely required any tamping and only needed one relight about midway through the bowl. It burns cool and slow, and gives plenty of thick, creamy smoke. Burnt down to a fairly fine ash, and left my pipe nice and dry. Very Smokeable with no fuss.
Summary: I really enjoyed this blend, it is rich, smooth, sweet, creamy, dark, smokey and spicy. It is a complex smoke that is still very simple to enjoy, and easy to maintain. I am glad I have 2 tins in my cabinet. It isn't heavy on the nicotine, but there is a nice amount there, it would make a fine all day smoke for Balkan/Oriental fans. I smoked it in a Stanwell Brass band with a conical chamber.

This tobacco is a mild but not a boring smoke. Smoked in the early part of a Summer day, on the lanai in Waikiki. It was not out of place, performed the role well of a summer daytime smoke, not overpowering, light and easy with character. Picture a duet of oriental as vocalist and virginia as supporting pianist. I bought a 1oz sample online and packed my pipe right out of the "pouch" (i.e. Ziplock bag) it was mailed in, so I can't comment on the issue of the tin quality not being up to snuff. I'm looking forward to smoking the 1-ouncer again and procuring the charming looking tin in a future order.
