I have been smoking Savinelli's Giubileo d'Oro for a while now and I'm finally reaching the end of my tin which means I'll do a review.

This tobacco is an English Blend produced by Mac Baren for Savinelli it only comes in a 50 gram tin to my knowledge.

Upon opening the tin you are met with the typical smokey aroma from the Latakia, and hint of sweetness which I'm guessing comes from the Virginias. The tin has three rows of Mac Baren flakes which are very easy to fold and stuff or rub out at your pleasure and preference. I find them at a smokable dryness though you can dry them to your liking.

The flakes are easy to light and I sense no bite even with long puffs while getting it lit. It burns clean and requires an average amount of relights.

Now to taste. I find this a particularly well blended tobacco and the flavors meld one with another. You can taste the Latakia and the sweet, sort of citrusy note from the Virginias. If I could describe this blend in one word it would be mellow. At first, I admit, this was a bit too mellow for my taste and I was tempted to jar it and forget it. I am glad I didn't. I now notice a nice complexity and I enjoy it. However if I'm honest it is still forgettable when compared to my usual preferences like Artisans Blend and Old Dublin. I think for some this could be an all day sort of English. I have noticed more flavor in a deeper bowl, I have a Kaywoodie Large Billiard which I've been using for my review.

Pros: very consistent burn rate and flavor. Cons: very mellow to the point of obscuring components.

I have to admit this has grown on me, but I don't think I'll order any in the near future. Let me know what you guys think.

If you're looking for complexity or a bowl that will remind you of burning a large pile of damp leaves back in your childhood, give this a miss. The VAs are nearly equal to the Latakia, even if they mostly provide just a little sweetness and mellow out the Latakia. The Latakia is well-balanced and never comes close to being over-powering. The flakes were just right for me (those that fully rub-out flakes might wish to let it dry a bit). No bite, stayed lit. A nice, pleasant, modest blend on a cold winter's day.

I initially only ordered this savinelli offering due to the cool, classy looking tin and because I have a special attachment to savinelli in general due to inheriting my very 1st pipe from my father. A fine 1970s model savinelli briar with an absolutely massive bowl. Its mostly for display now due to the amount of tobacco it requires just to get it halfway full, but in my piping infancy I smoked a lot of leaf out of my old nelli. It will always be one of my most prized possessions. Anyway, I'm really glad I ordered this now because it is one of my top 3 English blends to this day. The inside of the tin mirrors the outside in class having several rows of multicolored, delicately placed flakes of near perfect smoking consistency. I love the smell of this one because along with the smoky latakia you also clearly smell an extremely pleasant Virginia in there as well in perfect balance. Oftentimes this type of blend is dominated mostly by a strong latakia, but that's where this blend really shines is in it's truly impeccable balance which is not easily achieved. I'm sure at one time this blend was someone's labor of love and a lot of time was spent getting it dead right. Its one of those rare tobaccos that makes me feel like I've got something that not just anyone can aquire and it's something special, even though anyone can aquire it with a simple visit to our beloved p&c or it's competitor. If you are a fan of English blends then you should definitely give this a smoke.

Savinelli’s Guibileo d’Oro is an archetypal "simple English" blend that delivers first quality tobaccos and a comfortable smoke. In the tin one finds two rows of dense, dark, perfectly formed flakes. Tin note is smoky, slightly musty, Old School Latakia over premium, air cured, cold-pressed, red and brown VAs that are earthy, hard wheat, semi-sweet. If you fold and stuff loosely, as I do, you’ll have a long, leisurely session with plenty of fragrant smoke that tastes like it smells and a long, smoky, sweet-and-sour aftertaste. No funny stuff, just a cracking good smoke, top to bottom. Strength is medium. Tastes are just over medium. Room note is perfectly apropos.

One great smoke. Four stars.

I really enjoyed this blend that I purchased around 8 years ago, and which I understand is no longer available. Pity that is as this was one of the better latakia blends I have tried in the past few years. This blend has plenty of sweetness in the virginia varietals that are used and, to my tastes, just the right amount of latakia.

The interplay between the two leaf components is fantastic. It is not a leather smoke fest like some latakia blends can be. It also did not tire the palate. It is a bit one dimensional, but it is a good dimension. I would not hesitate to buy more of this one if I were still buying tobacco; and if it was still available. As this is not the case, I guess I will have to wallow in the fact that I should have bought more.
