Planta Empire - Latakia
(3.00)
Plenty of Syrian Latakia and high-quality Virginias are matured along with a little Oriental leaf. Delightful zesty, smoky and strong.
Reichlich Syrischer Latakia und beste Virginia-Grades werden mit etwas Orient-Tabak abgeschmeckt und in Ruhe gereift. Wundbar würzig-rauchig, kräftig.

Planta's recent announcements of closing it's production brought Mac Baren to the plan of saving a traditional german tobacco producer. Both companies agreed to a friendly takeover and Planta's products are marketed under Mac Baren's flag in the future.
Due to those news I had to get a few tins of their Empire Latakia as well as their Empire Perique again as I remember those were solid quality blends. Presentation in the rather small tin is really nice; two stacks of dark flake slices inside a wax paper all wrapped in a plastic foil seems to keep the moisture and is like opening a birthday present.
Cold smell is spicy and a bit earthy. I rubbed it out (crumbled a bit) and smoked it right away without drying. Burns very slow but even with little condensate.
Taste is of spicy leathery Latakia from the first toke. Creamy over all with the VA contributing it's sweetness. Orients are adding character also. Bit mossy bit earthy but then comes back sweet like a cake. Great variety of tastes here that reminds me a bit of Dunhills London Mixture but a lot creamier and deeper.
Well matured flake tobacco with great share of beautiful Latakia. Good composition and a blend that hopefully won't have to fear a change in recipe.
