I was quite excited to try this blend as it was described by The Danish Pipe Shop as: "Marlin Flake" with perique and toffee flavor!' I love all of those things and the name made me laugh so I ordered a tin sharpish.
First off. This is not a flake tobacco. When I popped the tin I was expecting to find the long flakes of Marlin Flake, but found a ribbon cut or broken flake tobacco (I can’t tell the difference yet sorry). The predominant scent from the tin is that nondescript aromatic aroma that all aromatics seem to share, although there is a faint stewed fruit Virginia note present too. Well... I was pretty disappointed with this but still keen to give it a go.
The aromatic taste dominates this tobacco and everything else gets lost behind it. The Perique is comes forward later in the bowl, but the Virginias never really shine through. Over all I found it a thin, disappointing smoke that didn't really satisfy my want for the taste of Virginia and ghosted my VaPer pipes with an aromatic taste that disappointed me even when I wasn't smoking it.
I was expecting a VaPer flake with a touch of flavored Cavendish. What I got was a heavily cased aromatic tobacco. Now I do not smoke aromatics as I don't care for them, so please remember that my review is entirely subjective and based on my taste for pure tobacco blends.
