Samuel Gawith Brown No. 4

(3.17)
Brown No.4 is a full flavoured full strength tobacco made by Samuel Gawith in Kendal. It is spun from Dark Fired Virginia's and is a slow burning tobacco. Despite popular belief, the brown twist is a stronger strength and flavour than the black twist. This tobacco is definitely not for those new to pipe smoking! As per Gawith&Hoggarth the only components in this rope are dark fired and dark air cured leaf. There is no cigar leaf, that taste comes from the dark air cured tobacco used. The outer wrapper leaf is a dark fired variety.

This tobacco was quite a surprise. Not at all the horrible experience that I was led to believe it was going to be. The tobacco is very strong in the nicotine department; in fact, it is stronger than Royal Yacht, the tobacco I use for a set point when measuring strength. It has no bite however, and has a very enjoyable taste. The burning characteristics weren't the greatest and it needed quite a few relights. I have to say though that I enjoyed it very much. This may be a virginia, but the flavor is unique to itself. If I didn't know better I would have thought that a floral casing had been used, but I believe that this is just the tobacco itself. Very rich and hearty, this is the perfect compromise when you can't decide between a fine, dark, maduro cigar or a pipe full of pleasure!

As you might have guessed from the other reviews, this is strong tobacco. I first tried it in a group 5 dunhill chimney and got about half way down before I had to leave to get something to eat. That said, I've really come to like this rope. More often than not I'll mix it with a sweeter virginia ribbon cut, like Dunhill's Apertif, which produces a very nice smokeable blend. I cut it with a cigar cutter into about 1/4 inch slices, then break it up. The outer wrapper comes apart into leaves, but the middle breaks into wonderful little taste chunks. If it is mixed you know when you've hit one while smoking a bowl. If smoked straight it does give me the back of the throat "tickle" from the nicotine; the aromatic version of this rope is a bit smoother (see that review). Taste stays pretty much the same throughout the bowl. Very little moisture. Does not DGT well at all. Very convenient to carry - cut off an inch or so and you're good to go. All said, I like it, but rarely smoke it straight. 7 of 10. - Kelly
