PO for the experienced pipe smoker. A blend from the trained tobacco taster. Based on classic Virginias with a spicy addition of perique, latakia and black cavendish. A very deep experience for the taste buds.

Paul Olsen - PO (My Own Blend).

For a change I actually bothered to read the description on here prior to opening; "hmmm, I fancy a flake" I thought. That said, I was slightly disgruntled when the opened tin revealed a ready rubbed mixture- I've amended the details!

The ready rubbed blend appears to contain a higher proportion of Perique, Latakia, and Virginia in comparison to the Black Cavendish; there's still a decent amount of BC, just not as much. The tin-note seems slightly herby, but not overly so.

The smoke: to my palate it seems to be fairly well rounded; the different constituents are all identifiable and give their character to the smoke. The Black Cavendish's sweetness domineers the initial puffs, and then it's hard for me to put my finger on exactly what the added flavour is; it's a little herby, a touch sweet, and slightly alcoholic, with maybe a touch of mint. The Perique flavour's quite stereotypical: very spicy and somewhat plummy. The Virginia and Latakia don't seem to be quite as noticeable at first; they require a little patience to enter the scene. I could also swear there's some Oriental in there; I thought that might have been left off the description but it doesn't say anything about any on the website for The Danish Pipe Shop! For me, the nicotine's definitely above medium: I'd put it down as being medium to strong, leaning more towards strong most of the time.

This is a good blend that will be sure to please many smokers. In my opinion though, the casing lets this down...quite a lot. With that taken into account I think I'll only somewhat recommend it.

Two stars.

Well. This will teach me to pay attention: when it says "black cavendish", watch out. PO is a fine blend of top quality tobaccos. It's also quite boozy: the tin note is equal parts tobacco and red wine (?). The smoking experience is the same.

It might be for you, it's not for me.
