GQ Tobaccos Soft Scotch
(3.67)
To many, whisky is a sharp, fiery experience and so it is with latakia. Many latakia smokers enjoy a wee dram when they are supping away this smoky Oriental. So for this latest addition to the Aromatic Latakia series, we had to combine the two; in a light and mellow setting. We won’t lie, it has taken us countless months and dozens of re-blends, but finally we got the balance it needed.
What starts out as a classic Danish style base of black cavendish with a sprinkling of sweetened Virginia. A sticky casing of vanilla is applied to this base, giving a mellow and velvety smooth foundation. Latakia is then blended in for its cool and creamy nature and topped with scotch. The tobacco has the whisky applied every 2 days for a period of 2 weeks, soaking into all of the tobaccos, before being air dried to the desired moisture content.
The resulting tobacco has rich, sweet & smoky aroma from the pouch, which carries through into not only the smoke, but also the room note. Thanks to the use of black cavendish and latakia, the smoke is thick, creamy and easy to smoke. The tobacco is mild, with all three tobacco flavours balanced throughout the smoke.
Notes: Designed to be an aromatic that doesn't smoke like one.

GQ Tobaccos - Soft Scotch.
The aroma from the bag is great, the whiskey topping is the most prominent with the creamy vanilla sitting just behind it. It looks to contain a higher proportion of black Cavendish with a great amount of moisture.
The taste from Soft Scotch is lovely, the aromatics come through brilliant. Like the aroma the whiskey is the stronger of them, it doesn't taste like a whiskey barrel but it has a really good addition of whiskey which adds a great touch of excitement. The vanilla is nowhere near as strong, a lot subtler addition that seems to soften the mix off. The tobacco flavour balance is impeccable, I get a great sweet note from the black Cavendish while there also resides a smoky flavour of Latakia of an even weight. I find the Virginia a little harder to recognize, it seems to be just giving more substance to the smoke by filling out the weight and adding "N", but I suppose with a blend like this where the added aromatics are quite heavy a slightly insipid flavour like Virginia will be harder to discern! Inhaling this one is really easy, it doesn't hurt my throat and once it's down my head doesn't spin from "N"! The room-note is great, again the whiskey is the most pre-eminent with a superb smokiness from the Lat' but be warned, it is a really full note so plan your smoking location/company accordingly! Throughout the bowl it's required hardly any re-lights, it's burned incredibly steady and I notice at the end all the pipe has left in it is some very white ash, there's no dottle in mine!
Four stars, superb!

The very smoky, woody sweet Cyprian latakia is the star tobacco component, though it, like the other varietals, is sublimated by the toppings. The Virginia is citrus sweet with a hint of grass and earth in a minor role. The black cavendish has a creamy smooth vanilla taste that helps round out the blend. The vanilla topping is also creamy smooth, and well compliments the more noticeably applied deeply rich quality whisky. Well blended, you’ll notice most of the ingredients in virtually every puff, though the Virginia is the least obvious player. The nicotine level is a shade more than mild, and seems to gain a little strength after the half way point, but it’s not enough to sit you down in your chair. The strength is just past being mild while the taste barely touches the medium level. It may need a slight dry time, but I found it works best as it is. Leaves just a little moisture in the bowl, but the product can be burned to ash without much effort. The flavor remains consistent from start to finish without any weakening, dull or harsh spots. Won’t bite even when pushed, which is not always true of aromatics. The after taste lingers a bit, and the room note is fairly pleasant. As this is a fairly filling blend for your taste buds, it’s not quite an all day smoke, but it’s mild enough to bear repeats. Three and a half stars out of four.
