Every so often I feel the need to offer a split review of a blend and 633 is one of those blends. First, a new tin greets the nose with the usual plums, figs etc. I really enjoy it because it does have a bit more spice than some other vapers and a bit more "grass like" than Escudo. 633 may be a little too spicy for some vapor lovers. I enjoy these perfectly cut flakes right out of the tin, and like all the Solani tobaccos, it is of high quality leaf. My need for the second part of the review is because for me, hands down, when aged, this becomes one of the best vapors on the market today. The perique mellows quite a bit and the Virginia's become sugary sweet and tangy. It burns slowly and the sweetness is there from beginning to end. It is a total transformation from good to great, really great! Highly, highly recommended!

Update: one important point should be made if you are planning to age this blend. The 100g tins have the tobacco inside of a bag. While it can keep the tobacco from drying for several years, it doesn't age as nearly as well as in the 50g tins. If you love the taste of a well aged VaPer, I would strongly suggest spending a little more for the 50g tins or removing the tobacco in the 100g tin to Mason jars for the best result.

The Virginias have a bit of citrus, hay and grass along with a little ripe dark fruit and earth, and are a little tangy, too. They form the base of the blend. The perique has a very obvious spiciness along with some fig and raisin flavors as a supporting player. The spice is noticeable in every puff, and is well melded with the Virginia. The nic-hit is a little past the mild level. It burns cool, clean, and slow, but loses a bit of the taste if it's dry, so I recommend leaving it a little moist. Has a very consistent flavor with no weak or dull spots, and leaves little moisture in the bowl. Needs a few relights. Won't bite or get harsh. The after taste pleasantly lingers. Is almost an all day smoke, and an experienced smoker may consider it to be one.

Because this blend has received so many favorable reviews, I decided to give it a try and am sure glad that I did. I find the Louisiana leaf (which has to be molested almost beyond belief before it is considered smokeable) to add greatly to this blend.

Having said the above, 633 really is interesting. It is spicy, strong and very flavorful. Each puff gives you an added feature. Just plain delightful!

Fantastic VaPer. After about half way through my first tin of this, I immediately declared it to be my favorite VaPer. It is similar in tastes to Escudo, but I found the vas to be sweeter and the Perique level to be the perfect compliment or at the perfect level.

It is a high quality product from beginning to end the Virginias are bold and refined, the perique is light, but is definitely there giving this a flavor that stands out and edges out Dunbar and Dorchester by a fraction to my taster.

This was my first of many future tins of this one. Now, if they would ever offer a promotion on this one where I can score a lot on the relatively cheap side, I will be all set. Solani makes great tobacco and this one will not disappoint any Vaper Lovers. It is definitely worth the purchase price.

Presentation is lightly pressed flake with a mix of dark through light browns. The nose brings a bit more pronounced plum note than with other VaPer flakes, backed by the expected fig, date, and subdued Virginia hay- not green, and by no means fermented. Somewhere in the middle: a season aged. For my palette, that's just right and suggests subtle sweetness without heat or bite.

Deep, rich plum on the charring light with a just hint of spice, and an excellent burn after just a short, 10-15 minute air dry. The Virginias here are velvety smooth and, as I'm fond of saying, you just can't make a world-class VaPer without smooth, kind Virginias. 633 delivers an impressive depth of flavor without ever being sharp or biting. There is a significant, stewed fruit sweetness to this blend that is never artificial or cloying. Don't get me wrong: this isn't a candy-smoker's blend. Rather, the sweetness here manifests naturally, as a testament to the blender's art.

Like many delicious VaPer flakes, I find myself inadvertently increasing my cadence with this blend to get more and more of that unique, plummy flavor. Self-defeating, I know... But with 633 there is simply no bite and no heat to be found. 633 is very consistently flavored throughout the bowl and deep, rich, plummy to the end. Very easy smoking.

Dry and remarkably cool smoking, it's difficult to imagine a VaPer flake much better than this. Interestingly, I found this a bit lighter on the nicotine than most VaPer flakes, so that might be a positive for new smokers or those who try to minimize their intake.  The relatively lower nicotine content, the smooth, biteless Virginias, and the balance of sweetness and depth make this my number one recommendation for a new VaPer smoker. But don't misunderstand that comment: there's enough body and flavor here to place this at or near the top of any VaPer aficionado's list.

Quite simply, a masterpiece of the Virginia/Perique style.

"Nectar of the gods"..."God, I love Périque!"...I can fully echo these sentiments, and cherish this V & P flake accordingly. Sweet, spicy, heady...SOLANI 633 is almost pornographically good! (And like many violent pleasures, it can do things to you, if you really overindulge.)

Taste it slowly and deeply, like a good boy.

Note: I have been smoking this consistently and concomitantly with REINER LONG GOLDEN FLAKE, another memorable creation by Herr Will. Excellent as this is, LONG GOLDEN has a subtle richness and roundness that mark it as the choice between the two. This one has, NOT coincidentally...MORE PERIQUE. Lovelay.

This would be my 4th tin since trying this excellent blend a year ago. What can I say? It is one of the best Va flake available in the market today. Now I know a lot of the nay sayers are going to go bonkers with my claim, but hear or read me out first.

According to the tin description, this is a Va/Per blend and after researching this tobacco I have come to learn that it has been cased in honey. Now for the die-hard Perique fans, the piquant taste that Perique is well known for is somewhat subdued in this blend. On my palette, I can tell that there is Perique added, but in miniscule amounts. Not the type to please fans of SG St James Flake.

Now that i have got the Perique issue out of the way, this blend smokes extremely well. it has the sweetness of the Va amplified by the honey casing. Upon cracking the tin open I am able to detect raisins, figs and off course the honey aroma. Whilst strong contenders like the SG FVF and BBF holds the reigns when it comes to Va sweetness, this blend definitely gives the other two a run for their money.

The plus factor that Solani has nailed on this blend in comparison to the afforementioned SG's is the packaging part. The Flakes are uniformly cut and presented to you at a excellent moisture level. Drying out is optional with this blend, unlike the FVF and BBF.

Within my rotation, opened tins usually last for 2-3 months. By the end of that period, the tobacco smokes perfectly leaving me wanting to stock up on more.

One of the best presentations to date in a baccy, all three dimensions symmetrical between flakes. Flakes more lemon yellow in color than light brown. I detect a "brighter" hayish tin note than say Dunhill LF, no hint of honey to me anywhere in this blend. Superb quality is evident in the construction of this Solani blend. I cellared tbis tin 9-12 months, vacuum was present, yet the moisture level was dryer than [all] other flakes I've tried. No more than two lights were ever required throughout any bowl, and the baccy burned to ash, without bite.

My only beef(s) with 633 are that first- I taste very little perique anywhere during the smoking of any bowl. Secondly, to me its dainty in the Vit N dept; my preference of Va/PerBur blends of any type are for early morning, in part for the stimulation derived thereof.

Not much help from 633 in that venue.

I would highly recommend this blend to pipers with refined palates, straight Virginia lovers or VaPer enthusiasts adverse to too much spice, and newbs wanting to ease into this genre.

A true flake in a flat tin - always perks up the excitement for me. Mostly light in color, the flakes stay "flakey" in the tin. I preferred this one at tin moisture, which is weird for me with flakes. But the more I dried this one, the less flavorful it became.

I can best describe the taste of this one as Orliks Golden Sliced with the addition of perique. There was a very noticeable citrus flavor but, whereas I found it wearing over time with the GS, the perique in this blend made it work wonderfully. The perique's zestiness and piquancy offset the VA's sweetness with an excellent balance as the result. This blend exhibited no aberrations such as tongue bite, excessive relights, heaviness in the throat or tobacco infighting. It was far from complex but just a good, non-threatening smoke. I don't consider this one of the worlds great VaPers, but it was a pleasant smoke and one I'll come back to from time to time. I tend to prefer a little "darkness" in my blends, and this one was a bit too steered toward the lighter flavors. But anyone who prefers that taste should absolutely buy some of this and it could become a compelling favorite.

Solani-633: Virginia with Perique. People often talk about "love at first sight", well for me this is love at first light!

I adore Va-Pers and when I stumbled across this on My Smoking Shops site I just had to buy some. I'm so glad I did!

From the moment I cracked open the sealed tin I was enthralled. The aroma is more than enticing. It's smells of plums, raisins, figs and hay. Absolutely divine.

The flakes are slightly moist. Not overly so, a short airing will suffice but the slight dampness has caused them to become partially stuck together in the tin. This causes me no issues as I always rub my flakes but if you were to fold and stuff this may cause an issue as some of the flakes can tare and crumble as they're pulled from the other flake that holds them in the tin.

As I said, love at first light. This has an amazing flavour.

It's not anywhere near as spicy as most Va-Pers, the Perique gives a delicate amount of zing but the majority of the flavour space is occupied by a raisin/hay like taste. The dried fruit like part seems to become stronger about half way through the smoke.

I don't find the nicotine particularly strong in this one. Mild to medium is a fair label from my point of view.

This burns superbly. It doesn't want hardly any re lights and just the occasional tamp is quite adequate.

I think this would be a good blend to enter into the world of Va-Pers with, there's just enough spice to wet your whistle but it could be too tame for a true/hard-core Perique lover.

For me though it's highly recommended.

This is a very good blend.

Something between VA and VA/Per. VAs are sweet as candy, and "Per" part is a little bit low, although it pinches your nose when you french inhale. I've smoked better VA/Pers in my life, but all of them are unique in their own way, this one too. There's something very unique and interesting in it, the sweetness and that strange sensation of nostril tickling makes it adorable. I bought a 100g tin, which is not vacuum sealed. Nor is the plastic bag inside, so I've put it in a jar and aged it for a month. It gets better and sweeter with ageing, you can tell by only a month of "jaring" it. Room note is awesome, my wife nearly liked it, so I put "pleasant" for the fist time for non aromatic tobacco. Someone may find the fact that it doesn't change it's aroma pattern much through the bowl a boring thing, but that "steadiness" here is a good thing. It doesn't get darker as it advances to the bottom, it stays sweet and tasty. Highly recommended

Solani blends are always top notch. Expensive, yes, but always very good and always consistent. The aged burley flake is a classic and I suspect 633 is on its way to that status. The Virginias (light and dark) are bright and sort of citrusy, with a nice natural sweet tanginess. The perique is spicy, but balanced. It is interesting to compare this with St James Flake because the character of the perique is very different. SJF has a mellow autumnal fruit quality and this one is peppery and spicey. I think the percentage of perique is maybe a bit higher in the SJF. In any event, the flakes are perfectly formed (as is the Solani practice) and remind me a bit of Cut Plended Plug by F&T in texture. It is a medium body smoke, maybe a tad past that, and the room note is really nice. It isnt quite as cool as the gawith flake, but its still pretty cool. Overall its one of the better Va/Pers out there. The only complaint is that, like silver flake by solani, it is just a tad boring. This is a pretty minor complaint on the whole though. And maybe boring is the wrong word. Its an exceptionally good blend, and consistent. It is perhaps not as complex as, say, Beacon Extra but thats a small complaint. But its just not quite in the legendary class of Aged Burley Flake.. Solani is always worth the money I think, though.

Last month I cracked my first 150g tin of this. I've had a few tins of the smaller size & found them very good, high-quality leaf, ready to smoke right out of the cans (when aged 2 or 3 yrs). The bag was another animal altogether. Straight off, it was a bit harsh & bity unlike the other tins I'd smoked. They were just a bit sweet, just a hint of Perique spiciness, a nice medium bodied VaPer, altho a bit light on the "Per" side for my taste. The bag, however, was flat & sharp tasting. It was 2 years in the tin, so aging wasn't a problem. What was? I put it in a Ziploc freezer bag & opened it for an hour or so to sniff every now & then for three weeks (I must admit that the sniffing told me nothing at all...). When I finally lit it up after this air time, I was thoroughly delighted to find that it had attained that fine blend of slight sweet grassiness & light spice that the smaller tins had. It has virtually no bite when smoked slowly, and a nice medium-full flavor & aroma that go well with anything from a good book and/or a double espresso, to a fly rod. Well recommended as an intro to the VaPer world for anyone.

I scored a tin of 633 at the CORP Expo in Richmond yesterday and cant for the life of me seem to stay away from it. This is a fine VaPer flake. There is just the right amount sweet & spice that just makes this a comfortable all around smoke for me. Dont get me wrong I still like my Escudo which has more of a spicy kick that I like than 633. Both are excellent smokes, but 633 seems to be more refined IMHO.It has behaved well in my Briarbird Hatfield Cutty no matter what method I use either rubbed out or just a smiple fold & stuff it delivers both ways. If your a VaPer fan as I am treat yourself to a tin the next time your at your local Tobac shop or place an on-line order, you will not be disappointed.

Nice tin note. Light colored flakes alternating between streaks of brown and beige. Gravity feed, char, tamp and light gives a nice mellow and deliscious smoke. Beautiful taste when drawn through the nose. The ash is nice and white showing the purity of pure leaf without artificial additives. This is a fine Va/Per. I'd give it four stars but I'm stubborn, and found myself handing out four stars for everything I like. Solani, of course, uses quality tobacco, the flakes lay nice in the tin, have that nice figgy smell when you open it, nice peppery perique, it's all splitting hairs after that. It's a little spendy, but c'mon, you've been lying to your friends and family and string of significant others about what you spend on this “hobby” since you first dropped more than three figures on a pipe, and if you haven't, you better lie to the rest of us because we will cuss the day of your birth. 633 is a beautiful experience. Perfectly rectangular pressed flakes. It's a uniform, clean, and tidy presentation.

It rubs out easily and quickly, and the moisture content is almost perfect straight from the tin. One flake, rubbed out and dried to your taste, gives the perfect amount of tobacco for a ninety minute smoke. It needs to be kept in an airtight container, or with some foil under the lid, to keep it from drying out too much.

The Virginia dominates the first third of the bowl, with the Perique coming in a little later, but the Perique is not overly heavy. The nicotine content is medium, not too strong. 633 tastes great, not as full as some VaPers. It burns down to a fine white ash.

If there is a downside, it is a mild medicinal odor that it shares with Reiner's Long Golden Flake, both from the same blender. Some might say that it is a very consistent smoke, almost always the same from pipe to pipe. Others might say it is blandly predictable. For these reasons, it is NOT in my regular rotation, but I recognize that it is a favorite of many others.

It is best in large bowled pipes, and it must be smoked very slowly, or you lose the sweetness of the Virginias. Good with coffee in the a.m. on the porch in the sunshine. My wife loves the smell of it!

A good tobacco, worth a try maybe, but only two stars from me for its somewhat bland taste, and the casing.

A very nice quality tobacco, but on the boring side. I'm reluctant to be overly critical with all the "Great" reviews, but to me, this just isn't that interesting. Has moments of sweetness but more of dark VaPer. Not a smoke you can light and go work in the garden with, this needs some attention as it can bring some spice and heat. Personally, I seem to be "fidgeting" with this blend to get some consistent flavor without any harshness.

I can't give this one 4 stars as I can think of a group of other 4 star VaPers I like better, ( SG -St James Flake, Dunhill -Elizabethan, Escudo, McC- Beacon Extra, Rattrays- Marlin Flake ),spend your money on one of these instead.

Let me start off by saying that this review is more than two years in the making.

I love VaPer blends. I'd always heard about this blend, but living where I am, it's really hard to find. Two years ago, I was amazed to see that my local tobacconist had several tins of this - I think it was eight in total. I bought all of them.

After reading some of the reviews here, the consensus was to let this age for a bit. So I put four tins aside for aging, and smoked the other four. After I was finished with my original four tins, trust me, it was VERY hard to forget about the other four tins I had put aside.

Without aging, this tobacco is simply superb. It's everything I've ever wanted in a VaPer. Smooth, great flavor, burns easy, and is just delightful. Just the right amount of Perique, and the quality of the Virginia's is obviously apparent. Incredible tin note. Incredible flavor.

After two years of aging, I can easily say that this is probably the best VaPer in the world, bar none. Davidoff's Flake Medallions is a very close second, but this is just absolutely sublime. With two years of aging, everything is just amplified for this blend. The Perique kicks more, the Virginia's are sweeter. It is just superb. It still remains easy to handle, easy to light, and easy to clean. Leaves a fine black and white ash.

My suggestion would be to sip this slowly to extract the most flavor out of it. Not that you will be having any problems in the flavor department, because this blend is just bursting with it.

I would be happy only smoking this for the rest of my life. It really is that good. If you're a VaPer lover, you owe it to yourself to try this blend.

Edit : I recently opened a six year old tin of this, and I must say that I just want to live inside this tin of tobacco. The perique has almost completely mellowed out to the point where it smells floral. Not too much spice with this much age on it, but the sweetness is out of this world, as is the tin note. Pro tip - do not rub this flake out. Just take a flake, fold it, fold it again the other way, rub it just a little between your palms so a small amount breaks off and loosens up a little, then just stuff it in. Use the rubbed out pieces for kindling. Every bowl of this has been a nirvana smoke. Goes all the way down to the very very end, and tastes superb all the way though. I wish I had more! I could smoke this every day for the rest of my life and never complain about it. I am in love.

Like all Solani products, attention to detail is valued and noticeable. The presentation is as good as it gets. Tightly packed, equally cut flakes fill the tin. The tin note is remarkable. My second tin was even better with four years of age. On the lighter side of most va/pers but with plenty of glorious flavor. Somehow, with muted strength compared to its contemporaries, the fruit and grass notes with a hint of spice work BETTER together than the fabled Escudo or Bullseye Flake. As the name states, the tobacco comes as a flake, and is a blend of bright Virginia and perique. Perique is an interesting tobacco, with a rich and deep aroma on its own, and blends nicely with Virginias. I'm probably wrong, but everything about this blend reminds me of Mac Baren. The immediate tin aroma was of fermented fruits and fermented Virginia, and the tin looks very much like the tin in which Mac Baren's Navy Flake is sold. Initially, the tin aroma actually threw me a bit.

Forging ahead, I took out the tobacco, which almost looked more like a cake than flakes. This tobacco is very moist, making the flakes a bit difficult to separate. They sort of peel apart in strips. However, once removed they rub out nicely into a sort of ribbon-cut appearance. Because of the moisture content I packed the first pipe a bit more loosely than I usually do, and I think that was a good idea. The draw felt just right when I first set flame to the tobacco.

My first thought when I had it lit? Wow! I wasn't really expecting too much, in part because I didn't want to be disappointed and in part because I bought the tobacco having not heard of this particular blend. I found a nice, rich, sweet taste from the Virginia, and the perique added a sort of fruitiness reminiscent of a stoved Virginia and a spiciness reminiscent of McClelland's 2035. Several people who were around me during the first bowl commented on the pleasant aroma of the tobacco. The main flavor is dry and sweet, and the spicy and fruity undertones are exceptionally pleasant and smooth.

Several subsequent smokes have confirmed to me that this tobacco is a keeper. It DGTs well, smokes surprisingly dry for as moist as it is in the tin, and provides a smoking flavor and experience that rates up there with my favorites.

This flake is beautiful in every way. Gorgeous presentation in the tin, and a tin note which is nothing short of fantastic. Loads of stewed dark fruits, figs and raisins, with a complex sweetness and a fully integrated spiciness. Mouthwatering!

The taste is just as fantastic, though somewhat diferrent than the tin aroma. More grass and hay and even a little citrus on top of the deep fruit base, with subtle tanginess underneath. The Perique is perfectly integrated, never sharp or overpowering, but greatly supporting and enhancing the complexity of the Virginias.

Rather moist out of the tin, and a few relights may be necessary. Will not bite the experienced. Burns cleanly and leaves little other than light-grey ashes.

I got the best results smoking this in cobs and clays. Briars seem to subdue the lighter aromas very slightly.

This is without a shred of doubt the best Va/Per I've had, and pretty close to the overall best pipe tobacco. Yes, it really is that good.

I am smoking a 10 year old tin of this, and I find it to be my current favorite VaPer. It has a slight tendency to bite me, but not to the degree that Silver Flake exhibited. For whatever reason my 10 year aged tin of Silver didn't agree with me, and I get along with most of the Mac Baren blends which tend to bite many. It has just the right amount of spice from the Perique and the VA is quite smooth. Very tasty!

Tin note: a little bit plum and fruity Perique smell; most are very grassy and citrus Virginia.

Solani - 633 is on Virginia side rather than Perique side; it is on Bright Virginia side rather than dark Virginia side.

When smoking: Grassy Bright Virginias are much more than ripe red Virginias that are a little bit fruity and earthy; perique has fig and raisin smell in the background.

Cool, smooth, clean taste all day smoke.

Four stars rating. One of best VaPer and a little bit hard to get in the US.

And I see some two stars reviews, and I recommend you guys should age for some time to enjoy.

Besides, I don't think Solani 633 is "on the boring side" like some two stars reviewer said. Additionally, as I said Solani - 633 is on the Bright Virginia side rather than on the Perique side or dark VaPer side. So it is very different from the dark VaPer category including St James Flake, Escudo or Navy roll, McC- Beacon Extra, Rattray's- Marlin Flake. For the same category, Solani 633 is much much better than STG Dunhill -Elizabethan. Hope the guys enjoy their the STG version Dunhill -Elizabethan shag and I just enjoy my Solani - 633.

My first look at Solani 633 occurred yesterday when my partner picked up a tin for me while in town, I had mentioned to her previously how I wanted to try Solani 633 so it came as a pleasant surprise to me.

First impressions were good, I like the small size tin as it fits comfortably in my pocket. Upon cracking it open I see white paper encasing the flakes sealed with a gold coloured adhesive tab, these sticky tabs usually loose their purpose fairly quickly when the glue dries out.

Anyway, on to the prize, mostly light brown coloured, thinly cut flake, quite loose so they rub out very easily, moisture level straight from the tin is spot on I think too.

First sniff of the tin produced the, somewhat expected, fresh hay/grass, almost citrus/lemon or maybe I should call it 'zesty' but there is a very definite fig and raisins or plum thing going on too, is this partly from the perique?. As others have wrote, the perique contingent is slight I agree but it works so well. This tobacco could be smoked all day without any problem whatsoever, in fact I have had a wee bit trouble leaving the tin alone since I got it!.

This is one of the easiest prepared flakes I've had the pleasure of smoking, so far I've only smoked it after it's been rubbed out but am curious as to how it will smoke if I were to fold & stuff a flake instead?.

After the initial charring light it stays lit well with only need to tamp now & again. I like to smoke it slowly and experience every taste it gives me, it's been said it's been cased with honey, I haven't read this officially from Solani but I can taste a very honey like sweetness from this tobacco. To be honest, it makes no odds to me whether it's really been topped with honey or not other than how I taste it and that's been good so far.

The tin note is absolutely gorgeous. This tobacco has a very pronounced and distinct smell of figs that I really like. Not that these flakes won't benefit from some drying time, but the moist content is just about right (goldilocks). They crumble easily in your hand and are quite easy to pack in your pipe. I cannot detect any added flavours or casing. The flakes comprise of gold and brown leaf, and the perique in it seems to be a minor player, so much so, it is almost undetectable (if so, it becomes more apparent as you progress every quarter of your bowl). All and all, this is a good tobacco, but I think it's been overrated. I don't see much of a difference with other tobaccos in this range, be it Capstan (no perique here), SG's Saint James, Elizabethan Mixture, or any other. That is, nothing really sticks out. It has hay and earthy undertones, and it gets zesty or citrusy at times (an unequivocal sign of perique presence), but this hallmark is so characteristic in many a VaPer. If it wasn't for the price tag, I guess I'd keep this backy in my rotation, but there are cheaper options out there.

Edit1: After you go past 1 half of your bowl, the perique content becomes quite apparent. It is only at the very beginning when you light up your pipe that it gives the impression it hasn't got any. This review is based on my first impressions, but it might change in the near future.

As someone who occasionally likes a dash of this and that on a good Virginia base, I am often disappointed by a single element overwhelming the flavour. This seems to happen particularly with Va/Per and Va/Bur blends, I speak for my taste only, of course, others enjoy a substantial helping of these other components and that of course is just fine.

But then sometimes I come across a blend which, to my mind, gets it just so, namely the underlying Virginia is of quality and shines through, whilst the other elements contribute their specialism in the background. This is just such a blend.

A beautifully prepared flake greets the eye and then the tin note gives you a classic damp, grassy, ever-so-slightly honeyed aroma on the nose. The moisture level in my example was just about spot on, leading to an easy rub out, a few minutes left aside and the broken flake slipped easily through the fingers and packed without issue.

On lighting, the Virginia makes its sweet presence felt, the mouth feel can only be described as soft. Joining the party is a delicate hint of spice, not so as to punish the snork though as can happen with this type of mixture. A mellow and balanced smoke.

Some hardened Perique lovers may regard this as a bit namby-pamby for their tastes. Conversely, those who sometimes crave a little something extra with their Va, but have been put off by overpowering experiences in the past, may just find something they like here. Me? I love it!

Highly recommended.

I did not experience any sweetness or fruitiness as described by others. Pepper came through enough to be noticable but not overbearing. Stays lit (rubbed out flake) leaving a nice white ash to the end of the bowl. 633 smokes cool and even all the way through. Mellows towatds the end, and i actually enjoyed it better. For me, its a little bit of a flat tasting blend, aside from the perique. I have a whole tin and will smoke a few more bowls. The end of the bowl may have granted a stay for this tin. I do prefer araomatics, but have other non aros that i turn to now and again. I will smoke a few more bowls and update this review if anything should change. From an aged (11 year) sample -- I don't find the sweetness others mention. but this is a really well-balanced VaPer. If you like your VaPers on the strongish but not overly-powerful side, this is the flake to try!

edit: based a sealed non-hinged tin (see the above review)aged at least one year. The hint of sweetness was in this tin, but just a whisper. I'll take their word it was honey. Since I know there are many tobaccos out there I would rate a 4, the question arises would I rebuy this particular tobacco, assuming my tastes don't change much more. In this case, the answer is probably not.

I first tried Solani 633 back in 2007 and was pleasently surprised with what was a wonderful high quality sweet virginia flake with just the right amount of perique. It burned beautifully all the way to a fine grey ash with rich smooth lightly sweet smoke and not a hint of tongue bite. This was one tobacco I stocked up on just in case it disappeared off the market or changed in some way as often happens in the tobacco world. Of course my supply ran out all too soon and 5 years later I picked up another 3 tins while on holiday in Malaysia. I must say I don't know if Solani 633 has changed or simply I have been spoilt for so long with other quality offerings, but it simply is not as good as I remember it. That's not to say I was disappointed, it just seemed a little less sweet, smooth and well balanced. Overall, it's still a great tobacco and perhaps it's that consistency between batches that is the main issue. Definitely recommneded.

I concur with 'SteelCowboy' (below) concerning the aging. You'd do well to try and keep your hands off it for 6-12 months (or more) before you open it. It does transform it into an otherworldly blend, and the more you age it, the more rewarded you will be. For sure one of the best vaper's I've smoked.

When fresh, it can be like some of the other reviewers suggest; harsh, bitter, etc., and over-the-top with the perique. But a little time really does make all the difference. Very flavourful, sweet, tart and silky on the tongue and palate. Really really good stuff. I have no other choice than to give it four stars.

Tin aroma suggests a mild topping. I can't describe what it might be. It smokes mild & cool with an initial sweet flavor that subsides as the bowl progresses. Stays mild, smokes cool & doesn't get harsh at the end.

This is a good VA/Per blend but I found myself drawing too hard for more tobacco strength & flavor which also seemed to dissipate after about half way down...became rather bland...a little "wimpy", as it were. I prefer at least a medium strength in this genre of blends. I have always enjoyed smoking a good VA/Per. However...

This was reminiscent of Long Golden Flake, also blended by R. L. Will. I prefer Escudo over either for the same reasons. For greater strength and more tobacco flavor, try Escudo or maybe some Marlin Flake, C & D Perique blends, McClellands & a few other brands that are a far better choice, IMHO, of course! Escudo was one of my firsts into a forray of VA/Per blends. I intend to always have aged Escudo & other Perique blends stashed in a section of my modest cellar.

633 is not a bad smoke in this genre. Certainly better than others but it did not make my top twenty...or thirty & doubt I'll purchase another. Always a pleasure to try something new though, if nothing else but to make comparisons. Therefore, IMHO, Solani 633 Blend merits three stars.

I initially wrote in to include this on the review as I thought it was called Virgina Flake. After reading reviews, I noticed it was called 633 and already included in the reviewed tobacco. So much for white print on a yellow background. A beautiful flake when opening the tin. Rubs out perfectly and burns slowly leaving a nice ash. I initially thought this blend was quite strong. Although I usually don't like a blend lacking latakia, this was a nice change of pace. The perique was perfect and added that extra tang. I do not think it is an everyday smoke though as it is quite strong. I initially smoked it in a medium sized Gepetto Italian briar and it was the perfect size for such a least for me. Given the strength, a large bowl would be too much Virginan but that is from someone who usually always smokes something with at least a bit of latakia in the blend. A nice sour note on the taste buds. The room note was very pleasant expecially if there are folks in the room who are opposed to latakia. I will continue to review to see how the blend fares at different times of day with a different pipe. Now, and only after one pipe, I rate it only a two star but then that first pipe was after a few others and late in the evening so my taste buds could have been burnt out. More or the review to come later.

Update: I initially gave this a 2 star but after smoking other Virginan's this is nice. Now about six months later than my original post, going through my 3rd tin and find this one of my favorite VS/Perique blends. The presentation in the tin is beautiful with beautiful pressed flake. Prepared it by cutting into small cubes with a scissors and but into a #3 Dunhill White Dot Billard. What a nice smoke! Cool, balenced and leaving a beautiful white ash. I have dedicated this pipe to this blend as the small bowl is a nice way to capture the nuances of both the sweet Va and the perique. Like this after a big Sunday breakfast...robust enough to get me to lunch. Will buy a few tins and store it as I do think it will age well.

Half way through my tin of this, opened it about three weeks ago and it's hitting perfect smoking pitch now...a no-nonsense mature VA flake, not overly bitey or sweet...the Perq sits very much in the background, barely noticeable. It is quality for sure but it does miss a "WOW" factor, that said, that's also its strong point...recommended...maybe a 3.5 stars but I don't see it worthy of a four...but if you like an honest VA flake and a wee pinch of Perq, you will not be unhappy with your thinner wallet.

A bit watery and too delicate when freshly opened, this traditional flake actually improves after opening, gaining some strength and taste. It's a grassy bright virginia with a moderate amount of perique (quite tolerable even if you can't stand the Louisiana leaf) and some notes which can make you think of a very small dose of burley. A decent, well-burning flake... but nothing particular to recommend.

There isn't a Solani blend I don't like to some degree. This was my first taste of Perique and my first flake from Solani.

Rather mild tin fragrance, and as you'd expect a square and rather sticky slab of lightish brown flake bars await.

Picking it apart took ages (I prefer to rub out my flakes) and I was surprised how it took to the light. I expected it to be really moist a la Gawith's finest, yet although it felt quite wet as I dished it out it burnt evenly and without relights.

A very mild Vaper this one. The perique is well in the background and stays there, so I'm no wiser really. There is enough body there to easily finish the tin and return for refills which I did.

Not especially memorable but certainly an all day smoke, as there is undoubted quality in this blend.

Can't say I'd bust a gut to buy it again, although if I had access to a tobacconist that stocked it, I would certainly buy it for the cellar.

The red VA's are slightly tangy and sweet and more in the background. The perique has a nice peppery note and some plumb and fig notes as well. The finish is quite long and the taste will remain with you for a while. Smokes slow and does not bite. Should be on every VA/Per lovers wish list it is a marvelous smoke.

It's got some plum like notes at first but mostly it's sweet peppery Virginia. This is probably one of the most enjoyable smokes to be had in my opinion. Sam Gawith is similar but Solani 633 is smoother and more rounded. It is also similar to Orlik Golden Sliced, aka Orlik Red but the perique content is higher and of course there is no burley; and the citrus notes are more like plum. If you like Vaper's then this has to be tried. It's top notch and a winner. No bite and only smokes wet if pushed too hard.

The beautiful, mottled brown flakes come in perfect condition. The slightly sour tin note tells you that there's a fair share of Perique in this blend: it's grassy from the Virginias, but mostly fruity with hints of raisins, prunes and dried figs, yet also slightly musty.

I use the fold and stuff method for filling my pipe. After a thorough charring light I level out the ashes before applying true light.

The rather strong taste is also dominated by the Perique, which gives it a peppery, spicy acidity with a fruity aftertaste. There's almost no sweetness in the smoke, exept when you put aside your pipe it leaves you with a dulcet taste. Personally, I find the content of Perique a little too high like a slightly oversalted dish, a bit unbalanced. The nicotine level of this Va/Per is quite high. It burns down evenly and coolly leaving some greying ash.

The room note is strong, but tolerable.

Virginia is for me the reason to keep smoking pipe. Solani 633 presents a blend of high quality American Virginias in a consistent way delivering medium body and nicotine. Some sugar casing is evident. The amount of perique would be homeopathic to my palate.

I took a chance on this one, since I don't normally smoke vapers. The tobacco seem to be a good quality and the flakes are easily manageable. The moisture content was right on target when you pop open the tin. It does seem to dry out very quickly, at least with the tin I got anyway. Because of this I dropped it down from a 3 star to a 2 star rating. Otherwise, this seems to be a very good blend. As others have stated previously, there doesn't seem to be too much perique in this, but the virginias seem to pick up the slack somewhat with its sweet taste. The nicotine level is a bit on the low end for me. It does smoke down to a nice ash at the bottom of the pipe. Overall, I would recommend this if you want to give a vaper a go.

Im a fan of VaPer so i like this blend too. This blend is kind a different with other VaPer that i usually smokes, the tin notes is similar with chinese green tea leaves that i usually bought. Came in slices flakes the tobacco is not too difficult to pack and doesnt need to rub it anymore, just make a tiny ball and then pack it firmly in to my pipe.

To maintain light this blend is quite difficult, need a good cherring light and several relight at first 3 minutes. I must light it carefull and prevalent to ensure that the tobacco surface had burnt well and i can draw and puff it easily. And i must tell you, this tobacco has a bite potential so must draw it carefull and smoke it slowly, if not it will harm your tongue.

After 3 minutes, the pleasant journey is starting. Great smokes with a mature virginia taste came and fulfill my mouth. A medium citrus like scent taste very good at my tongue and the smell is quite pleasant for me. And for good, the green tea flavor is come again, following the sweetness of the virginia. i dont know if this blend had flavor added or not but this taste is new for me since im a fan of Vaper. Peppery taste came quite stronger when i draw it little bit hard to get a great smokes but i can enjoy it well and very like it.

With all afford to enjoy this blend, i still highly recommend this blend. i really like the taste of this blend. The nic kick is not too strong, with a medium taste. And i have feeling if i got another tin and keep it for aging i sure this blend will be more great.

This is high quality tobacco. Solani 633 comes in rather large precise flakes assorted very neatly in the tin (pretty much the opposite from a sam gawith presentation). they have a pretty straight forward smell in the tin - the usual hay and figs.. I find half a flake easily fills the bowl of my small peterson barrel pipe. smoking qualities: very easy flake to smoke.. not much relighting required.. smokes fairly cool at a slow pace. one of my best flake experiences overall. tobacco qualities: mellow yet flavorful.. this is a great combination of virginia and perique. a little more spicy than escudo.. but it has some of the same characteristics.. very nice and earthy. there is a pleasant mustiness that reminds me a little of old gowrie.. oddly pleasant dusty attic kind of thing (hard to put into words) dried fruit comes to mind. The most addictive of the recent vapors i have tried (dorchester, st james, escudo, scottish cake) overall, this could be my new favorite. 633 gets some mixed reviews but for me it is well worth the price.. maybe not as complex as escudo.. but equally as satisfying - and with a certain flavor that i find very interesting.

As usual I get the best out of my flakes by rubbing them out rather than the old fold and stuff. I just prefer the easier smoke and the lack of relights. Tin moisture is right where I like it, it smells heavenly with that tangy Perique woven into the rather large flakes that take up half the tin. Well, I also got a couple of 50grms tins of this from Amsterdam. Now that the first is about to finish - and the second will stay in my cabined for aging - it's time to review.

Nice square and flat tin, of the like of the current UF by Peterson or Scottish Flake by McConnell. The tin aroma is inequivocably VaPer, in the sense of hayish bright Va's plus the raisiny-vinegarish note of Per. I don't detect any topping, it's all very much natural. A dozens - or bit more - of well separate flakes are stacked in two rows. They are more dry than wet, coming from a very "compressed" cake, mixing colours from the brightest Virginia to the deep dark brown of the Perique.

I have wasted my time to study over this by a couple of Mastro (a straight apple and a quarter-bent Woodstock) which I had back restored, before understanding they were not the right pipes... My half-bent rhodesian rusticated Brebbia is now giving me the best idea of how 633 smokes (at 1/5 the price of each the other two). One flake properly rubbed, stuffed not much loose, and here we go. Needs a couple of light & tamps, then it proceeds very steady giving a mixed salt & pepper dry ash.

633 delivers a smoke in the perfect tradition of VaPer's, something very close to Escudo, just a bit "drier" aroma of natural Va and condimental Per. This sweet and peppery combination is remarkably smooth and medium, without any aggressive tang. A perfect all-day (who cares ?) smoke, and even a better one as first pipe of the day (my reviews started at 08:30AM and will end in a hour and half, this is how long a flake is smoking). To the nose notes of biscuit, the ones which I like so much. The room note is something I appreciate when I'm back from an unsmoked room, but being the wife's rating...

My throat tell me that strength builds up from medium-mild to medium-strong.

Airing of the tin, in the sense that the best from 633 comes after the tin stays unsealed a month before use, is a strong reccomendation.

Very nice smoke, hope to get more tins to age.

If this isn't already a classic, I'll bet my pipe collection that it will be! I haven't had a pipe tobacco this good since I tried Reiner's Long Gold Flake. Come to think of it, I hadn't had a tobacco that good since I had experienced Escudo before that! LGF, Escudo, and this heavenly tobacco occupy a special place in my heart known as the Holy Trinity of Va/P's. I love Haddo's, Stratford, 2015, St. James, Elizabethan, and even 3 Nuns, but none of them come close to these veritable weeds. While Escudo is darker and sweeter (i.e. stoved) than the other two, and LGF is grassier and smokes cooler (thanks to a nice burley kick), neither are as complex and well rounded as 633. While hard to keep lit during the first 1/3rd of the bowl, after you reach this point its smooth sailing. This baccy builds up some nice sweetness and strength towards the end and leaves no dottle in my pipes. It does need some drying time and I strongly reccomend opening the tin and letting it sit for a week or two in a mason jar. Rich indeed!

Just when I think a VA/Per can only be so good I go and try Solani 633... While there are clearly nuanced differences in most VA/Per blends (from blend to blend) I have found that, in general, they fall into a consistent range. That range is sweet/bready/peppery/fruity. Each may play a stronger role in the varying blends but they all tend to stay within a range. 633 seemed to step further out of the norm on the fruity end of the spectrum than any VA/Per I have tried to date. This was very refreshing. Making it about 1/3 of the way through a 100g tin I think I can say this is consistent for this blend, at least at this point in its age.

The tin note is among the best, and I think VA/Per's have the type of smell that I could smell all day. I love Latakia blends and I love the smell, but I don't think I would want to smell that all day, this I could. Figgy and sweet with notes of baking bread and hay in the background. Refreshing. The smoke itself is really wonderful. I would imagine that if I could smoke toasted french bread with orange marmalade while standing in a freshly cut alfalfa field, it would taste like Solani 633. The perique in this blend is very fruity: raisins, figs and stewed plums come to mind. There is some pepper in the mouth and the tingle in the nose on retrohale but it is not as peppery as Dunhill deLuxe Navy Rolls or even Escudo. This kind of reminds me of Dunbar and Dorchester a bit but those seem to have a top note that provides the sweetness while this is pure VA and Perique perfectly mingled. The toasted bread character comes out more and more as you smoke it. I find this to be particularly tasty in a meershaum pipe. For those of you that haven't put a VA or a VA/Per in a meer, I strongly recommend it. I have to comment on the flakes. I love the presentation from the 100 gram tin. While the tin puzzles me a bit: it isn't vacuum sealed and the tobacco is in a plastic bag reminiscent of the cellophane packs of cigarettes, the flakes are beautiful. Long 1/2 inch wide ribbons of tobacco that are at least 6 inches long folded over. If I were a kid this would be the equivalent of rolls of shoe string red licorice (never touch the black stuff...or real licorice I guess). Comes wet, but I guess that is purposeful due to the lack of a tight seal. This is a tobacco that begs aging, but if you do want to age it you will have to jar the 100 g tins or just buy the 50g and throw it in a box.

this review is just to keep track for myself mainly, less intended as a serious in depth review. Just to keep an eye of what ive tried and what I like, with quick notes about it. alot of these notes are from memory, and I will update the review as I continue smoking them

this was something that i was not expecting to like. a va per that i diddnt really think about smoking, however it kept me going back for it and i couldnt figure out why. I will have to take nots while smoking again in the future. This is a good va per. maybe not my favorite thing out there, but highly satisfying. i would get again.

A very nice VaPer. Tangy citrus and a hint of dark fruit with ample sweetness and spice. Just a bit too grassy for my taste. Would like a little more dark fruit. Still a very tasty smoke.

Medium in body. I think a small amount of the sweetness may be added. Taste is medium. Burns very well. Pretty good stuff.

One of Solani's finest. The Flakes are beautifully presented, and emit tin notes of dried figs and cassis. I find the moisture content is perfect out of the tin, but may need a bit of dry time. The Virginias produce rich velvety sweet layers of earth and leather with citrus undertones. The complex dark fruit and spiciness of perique adds a nice contrast. Develops and intensifies in the bowl. Needs few relights, burns at a medium pace and leaves no dottle. A nice one for the cellar!

Adstringent, bitter and lacking flavor. Like smoking extra dry hay sprinkled with cracked black pepper.

Very pleasant, nice smell off the tin. Smokes well, lots of flavor. Topped with honey, considered a classic Danish tobacco by the company who makes it. Peppery and sweet, it carries a nicotine punch if smoked fast. One of the best Va/Per flake around and yet a surprisingly unassuming tobacco.

Sold to me on recommendation while buying FVF. Being from Louisiana and having cut my teeth on Perique in the form of "Picayune" cigarettes I can attest that this blend contains the "real thing", and a fair amount of it. Light years beyond Fillmore in flavorful perique, rich VA and ease of smoking. The presentation is exquisite. Smoked as a flake broken in thirds and stuffed into a medium bowl with medium lighting difficulty.

Update on 6/5/2008

I just have to bump this a star since it was noticeably better (sweeter and less hay-like) after I let it sit on the shelf for a couple of months. I'll pick up another tin sometime and let it age about 6 months before I open it and I suspect this will get even better.

Original Review on 3/11/2008 Follows

A low grade Virginia that I only managed to smoke due to the nice shot of Perique. A real disappointment from the company that makes one of the best blends ever - Luxury English Mixture (779). Go try Full Virginia Flake, Rattray's Old Gowrie or even McClelland's 2015 to move up a few stars.

Althouth I like Va/per tobaccos, this one has a little more perique than I enjoy. Nonetheless a quality product with a beautiful presentation.

Another first-time foray. 633 enjoys a stellar reputation among the va/per lovers, of which I would include myself. That said, this blend causes me consternation in that it is simply inconsistent. Fresh from the tin, the flavor is sharp and one-dimensional, the perique comes and goes and the base of virginia masquerades as a bitter burley. A weeks drying time helps immeasurably, and lulls one into a false sense of triumph over a finicky blend. No sooner had I enjoyed a good smoke (not phenomenal) than I loaded up another bowl and barely recognised the creature in my pipe. Further, what is the rationale behind the German obsession with casing any blend they produce? Most exasperating. Yet, I do see glimmers of hope for 633 and I. It has (at times) a completeness of flavor that leaves North American offerings behind. In the interest of good tobacciana, I shall persevere. More to follow... 09/2006 I smoked 633 off and on, most of this past summer, and a few months in a canning jar certainly settles its flighty nature down. Tasty and serviceable. 3 stars.

Satisfying virginia with a little too little perique. Reminds me a little of Petersn Irish Oak. I enjoyed this in a small Savinelli bulldog, fully rubbed and a little dried out. Best after it hits the zone, and good to the end. I think this would be better in a bigger bowl. Can't confirm if it's actually cased as some suggest. Not a particularly social blend, but good for me. By the end of the bowl, sufficient nicotine to ease me into bed.

Not a miracle but at least an honest tobacco. The casing, if any, just sweetens up the virginias, while the perique is there in little quantity, just to spice it up a little bit. If you leave it dry for a while it will smoke enough cool and won't be too wet. Good tobacco, but nothing to remember.

I can't add anything to what has already been said about this fine blend except to say this is GOOD STUFF! The only negative is that it is a bit pricey (but worth it).

A cigarette is to be smoked. A cigar is to be enjoyed. A pipe is to be savored.

I rate this tobacco 9.8 out of 10.

My first foray into the RL Will blends. Whie having doubts about hte Germans on their use of humicants, I was put off on this blend. A most unusual blend, in the cutting thick flakes, compaed to those of use you have smoked English flakes. These flakes are bright in the colour, blond shreds with the usual brown. The tin nose emits a strong tobacco, but the packing is easy, with a knife. Smokes well all the way down, with the perique rising when needed. An all around good smoke, burns clean to the bottom, and would be expected, the nicotine increases during the venture. 9 out of 10.

After reading the excellent reviews on this blend I ordered some from Cupojoes, NY. This review is the result of smoking the first of three tins. The initial impression regarding the tin aroma is it resembled that of Dunhill?s Light Flake: sweet natural Virginias, lovely pressed, spicy and exciting, but with a notch of Tabasco sauce! 633 comes very tightly packed, and it is still lighter in colour than DLF. Peeling off the individual flakes was a tricky business. Once done, the flakes are easy to rub out, pack in and light up.

The first few puffs continue to ring a DLF bell: the Virginias are smooth, quiet, elegant and slightly sugary, perhaps not as rounded or deep, yet full of body and character. But the resemblance ends there, for almost immediately the sacred weed from Louisiana asserts its presence, demanding immediate attention. Now the whole structure of the blend has changed, providing a unique layer of flavours. Without entirely receding to the background, the initial Virginian harmony becomes gradually encircled by the Perique?s piquant/peppery melody, construing a most intriguing dialogue of tastes: at times sinfully sharp and tangy, at times smooth and elusive, but keeping always a very peculiar density that lingers on well after the bowl is over.

For me this is a tobacco that does not burn hot, but I wouldn?t go to the extent of classifying it as a cool smoke. Absolutely no tongue bite, the blend seems to be designed to entice your senses by making your palate travel through a very spicy ?tastescape?, never tiresome, never dull. I think I still need to experience more of 633 before properly judging if it will become a regular smoke. So far, however, it has been a unique encounter, quite unlike any other tobacco with similar components I have previously tried (e.g., Stokkebye?s Navy Cut, currently a favourite of mine, though it doesn?t have the same Perique intensity as Solani?s flake), and definitely a top quality smoke.

This mix of light to darker brown tobaccos arrives as a block in a rectangular tin. I've never experienced a flake that had been compressed so hard and/or aged to the point that the layers couldn't be peeled apart. No harm though, I just cut or pull pieces and don't even rub them out before packing. The result is a cool, slow burning smoke with just the right balance between the VAs and Perique. Sweetness from the VAs but occasional spicy undertones from the Perique result in an interesting and enjoyable smoke. Even though this is a comparatively strong tobacco, I can smoke it all day in varied pipe bowl sizes without a hint of bite. A winner for a VA/Perique blend.

General Notes: For me, this is strictly a warm-weather tobacco. I can barely stand it during the cooler months. Something about the colder air outdoors enhances the spiciness of the perique to the point where it is almost unbearable to me. I agree with Trever (below) that this is best in my Italian pipes. They really bring out the high notes in this blend, without being so spicy as to overpower the rest of the taste.

I would like to start out by saying that I am an english fancier, and seldom have room in my rotation for VA or VA/Perique blends. However, I occasionally MAKE room in the rotation for this fabulous smoke. Like mentioned above, I only smoke this one in the summer months, which is the only time I ever smoke a tobacco of this variety. 633 has to be the most forgiving tobacco or this type. I find that this never bites for me, which makes it stand in a class of its own IMHO. The taste is quite sweet, with the spiciness of the perique giving it just the right amount of kick. When I'm looking for a change of pace around the summer months, I find myself reaching for this quite frequently. Highly recommended.
