A wonderful "semi-aromatic" pipe tobacco! Motzek was kinda missing on Aromatics, besides a few "danish mixtures" and the lovely "Ralf's Burley Cup", a delicious chocolaty and coffee-ish Burley aromatic the sortiment was missing a "bright charactered" aromatic tobacco. Well...here it is!
I only ordered a sample of it, because I was fearing it to be too sweet...stupid me, I wish I had ordered the 100g bag (only 14€!). Because what I looked at and smoked was/is top-notch!
Opening the baggie I see a very coarse cut mixture. Wide/corase cut Virginia leafs with golden-yellow colors dominate this blend. Some nedium-brown Burley and very few dark black Cavendish speckles. The scent from the bag is very delicious. Hard to grasp, but somewhat sweetish, reminding of (forest-)honey with noticeable tobacco aroma to it. The Virginias sport a bit sweetness, whilst the Burleys add a slightly nutty dimension to the scent.
I prefer "gravity filling" it and packing it as coarse cut as it is. Like this is burns very slow and cool, never bites and gives best flavors. Just let some tobacco drip into the bowl, gently knock with your finger against the bowl and let gravity do the "work" for you. Don't stuff it too tight tho!
Under fire this blend shows why it's called "Dad´n Tobak" (northern-german for "Whadda 'backy"/"What a great tobacco")! Exactly the kind of aromatized tobacco I like. Clearly aromatized, but enough tobacco. The tobaccos aren't only in there to carry the flavoring, but both components (aroma and tobacco) emphasize each other. Sweetish, reminding of forest-honey, reminiscent of the scent in a french Patisserie the flavoring is gentle, smooth and not overly sweet and constant throughout the bowl. The Virginias add some freshness by contributing slight hay and grass, as well as sporting some Virginia-typical sweetness. The Burleys add some mild nutty notes and the Black Cavendish rounds the whole thing by adding a "toasted" dimension, maybe a touch of Vanilla, but I wouldn't bet money on that.
Wonderful, really the definition of a "Semi-Aromatic" in the fashion of blends like Amphora (Full), Ralf's Burley Cup or Prestige Regular f.e.
I don't smoke aromatized tobaccos too often and treat them as some sort of "Dessert"....well Dad´n Tobak quickly got onto my "Dessert-Menu Card" after the first bowls! "Der kann was" we say in german - means "this thing is quality" or "this thing has some character!".
4/4 star for a aromatic tobacco in the very fashion I wish most aromatized tobaccos would be. Decently aromatized, with enough tobacco aroma in it to not think the tobacco is only in there to carry the flavorings. Highly recommended to anyone who likes a sweet smoke by times and especially to fans of aromatized tobaccos/aromatics. As described by Motzek "for fans of full-grown aromatics smokers who want to lean towards more natural tobaccos!"
