Ole Shenandoah Barrel Edition

(3.25)
Ole Sheanadoah Barrel Edition is destined to become a classic. Rich, mahogany burleys, and lemon-yellow Virginias are joined by Green River burley that has been fire cured and steamed, and finished with a smooth, warm flavor. This is a flavorful aromatic blend with outstanding room note that can be enjoyed throughout the day.

I had fun tasting all of the Ole Shenandoa blends (easily gotten at pipesandcigars.com). They have great tin art and really nicely put together aromatics with crisp, tobacco taste, yet with aromatic agents that are not too sweet.

Barrel edition did have some nice punch from the Burly and a subdued sweetness from whatever that extra was (a chocolate/coconut type of impression. Although aromatic, it is not a mild blend and will let you know that you're smoking a quality blend. This one was near or at the top of my favorites from this series.

Chocolate Hazelnut, caramel. I am a huge fan if barrel no 76 but this may beat it! I just wish I could find more!!! Luscious aromatic. Not too wet in the tin, not too dry. About perfect. Best of all the wife loved the room note!

Ole Shenandoah - Barrel Edition.

I selected this last night out of curiosity. The name Barrel Edition, to me, implies that it's an aromatic flavoured with whisky, or some other spirit. But that's not the case.

Rather stoutly cut ribbons, including dark, medium, and lightly coloured pieces. The scent from the tin has a caramel note to it and the hydration's good.

Unlike a lot of aromatics I don't find my palate being accosted by heavy, vanilla, black Cavendish. In fact, it isn't ANYTHING like that. I can easily identify the citrusy/sharp Virginias and coarse Burleys; there are more of these than the black Cavendish. On the negative side I find it bites hard, so have no other choice than to sip at it with caution. I'm unsure as to what, exactly, the toppings are. At first nuts come to mind, and there's a caramel-esc sweetness. But, by halfway there's a sourness and it reduces the pleasure. The consistency of a burn's good, requiring little maintenance.

Nicotine: mild to medium. Room-note: nice.

Barrel Edition? Unlike the other two reviewers to date, because of the bite and sourness, I can't give it any higher than two stars:

Somewhat recommended.

Pretty good aromatic. I get a strong vanilla flavor early on from the Cavendish, and it's very sweet & fragrant. Some type of whiskey is there though I couldn't identify it for sure (coconut rum maybe). The Virginia's provide a little fruit sweetness as well. Very moist, so let it dry for a bit before packing. It left a sticky feel on my fingers and the top of the bowl perhaps from whatever alcohol is present. Good one for public smoking.
