Paul Olsen Old School
(4.00)
Notes: A tribute to the good old days. Exclusively made for The Danish Pipe Shop. This is the master blenders tribute to the good old days. He has a small flake pressing machine, where he can make around 1500 grams. It's a full blend with matured dark Virginia tobaccos, full burley, perique and some dark fired cavendish. The flake has been rubbed for easy use. This is a very interesting blend.

For my first review I have chosen this tobacco, My Own Blend, Old School, apparently one that is not easy to come by. From start to finish this is a smoke which delights the tongue. Everything in balance and no dominating flavours - smooth, with layers of flavour that I find strangely comforting. It’s a regular choice of mine; a tobacco that never fails to satisfy. You won’t regret buying this one. I promise! 🙂

The mildly dark and stewed fruit sweet, earthy dark Virginias form the base of the blend, and also sport a light touch of tangy fermentation and a little sugar. The woody, earthy, moderately spicy, barely sweet dark fired cavendish plays a strong support role. The toasted, nutty, earthy, lightly woody burleys just rise above being a condimental addition as they are eclipsed a little by the cavendish. They also have a hint of cocoa. The spicy, raisiny perique is obvious in every puff, and is a little more than just a background player. The nic-hit is almost medium. The strength level is a step past medium, and the taste threshold is a shade stronger than that. Won’t bite or get harsh, but the spice content may tingle the tongue of a fast puffer. Burns clean at slightly less than an average pace with a fairly consistent, nuanced, flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires some relights. Has a pleasant spicy, woody sweet after taste that lingers a mite. Not an all day smoke, but not so strong that it precludes repetition.

This might be the most underrated and overlooked blend of all time. It is just excellent. The Virginias are dark and fermented, and with a delicious natural sweetness, though it is a pungent sort of sweet. The Cavindish is present and provides more balance and a touch of sweet. The Burly is backgrounded a bit, but gives the blend a fair amount of muscle. And then the Perique...which is used sparingly but you taste it for sure. It is just a full rich creamy smoke with layers of flavor. You wont find many tobaccos this good.

I don't have the palate or writing skills to do this blend justice; this review is for someone wondering if they should order this or not.
If you appreciate medium or full natural blends, get this while you can!
This is a rich, dark virginia dominant mixture. But it's more than that; the other tobaccos listed are all playing a role in creating a very special smoking experience. It's great even while slightly distracted, but sipping it slowly and paying attention brings rewards. I found it to be very cool and slow smoking.
The tin I got seemed quite fresh. Still, it was sublime. I will be ordering more to cellar some of it: if it's this good now, what will it be like after five years!?
