Villiger Robi
(2.50)
Des tabacs choisis avec soin, une expérience de 100 ans, en font ce mélange aromatique et avantageux.
Notes: Several Virginias, of various cuts & colors, and Swiss Burley.
Synjeco's website description: I had problems deciding whether to class this blend as aromatic or among the natural tobacco blends. The pouch aroma is of a vaguely flavored tobacco; however, when smoked it tastes as a natural quality blend. The room aroma is very pleasant and discretely sweet. I'd recommend it for those who like natural tobaccos and are looking to such a tobacco that has a sweet aroma to others.

The Virginias act as a base for the burley, a little citrus sweet and slightly grassy. The burley is nutty with a smooth, sweet molasses flavor, and a little cocoa. Does not have any chemical notes and gives a clean tobacco taste. Has a very mild nic-hit. I think some sugar and molasses come from toppings. Burns at a reasonable pace, cool, clean and even with no harshness, no sludge, and a consistent flavor. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs an average number of relights. Has a pleasant after taste. No chance of bite. Think of it as an American-style OTC in the vein of Carter Hall with a little more Virginia and a slight fuller, consistent flavor. It's not quite as sweet as CH, but unlike that blend, it does not have the habit of losing its sweetness near the finish. A two and a half star smoke.

Something old school about this blend. The shag cut is a breeze to handle, smoke quick and burns on its own with minimal attention. It is not an aromatic but seems only lightly topped. Doesn't change much in flavour through the smoke. Dry and light, without dottle. I can see how this would be an alternative to cigarettes as an all day smoke. Alas that joy must be a thing of the past in much of the world where having a pipe alight all day is just not permitted or practical.
