GQ Tobaccos Rum & Honey

(3.33)
As a rich and cool tobacco with a room note to please those who don't like latakia or Kentucky, they are pungent when burning! Built on a foundation of rum soaked brown twist, with some sweet gold and black cavendish to tone the blend down a little. This tobacco burns slowly and works well in a large bowl and smokes very cool with a good dose of vitamin N (nicotine). The use of honey and spices, along with the Rum makes for a sweet aroma that pleases most.
Notes: Rum & Honey was a personal blend of Glynn's he made years ago as a tobacco which smells nice, but isn't just hot air. "An aromatic with balls" -- Glynn's one line on this one.

I've been smoking rum and honey for a few months now and thoroughly enjoy it. Not a heavy smoke more in the medium of taste and flavour, could be a good all day smoke for some. Although it says it's cased with rum and honey I didn't taste either while smoking it but, don't be put off by that it's quite a smooth creamy type of smoke not over powering at all. when smelling the pouch I get a chocolatee smell which I find very pleasing but, no chocolate in the taste department. If you are looking for an aromatic that is not goopy and passes for an all day smoke give this a try I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Just as an update this stuff is wonderful I've had chance to smoke quite a bit more of this and it's becoming one of my favorite aromatics not a strong over powering taste somewhere in the middle but boy does it taste good. It has a good nicotine kick to it, if that's your thing you won't be disappointed.

The rum soaked G&H Brown Twist is the major tobacco component, and is earthy, dark fruit sweet, slightly grassy, and rather floral. The floralness mostly comes from the tobacco and perhaps it absorbed a touch of Lakeland while sitting in the factory, but I doubt it. The earthy, nutty burley is a minor component. In supporting roles are sweet gold and black cavendish, both of which help smooth out the blend with a bit of creaminess and a touch of vanilla from the latter tobacco. More sweet rum is added to the mix while the honey playfully joins in as the lesser of the two toppings. I detect a little spice, including cinnamon, and nutmeg, and there’s a little fruitiness that may come from another topping as well as from the rum. Well blended, you will notice most every flavor nuance from first puff to last without any weakening of strength and taste, the former being medium while the latter is just above being medium. It’s fairly close to being an all day smoke, depending on your desire for aromatics with a little strength. Leaves very little moisture in the bowl, though it may need a slight dry time. However, I found it works well as it is. The nic-hit is mild to medium. No bite. The after taste and room note are pleasant.

This is a review of two halves in some ways. The first pouch I bought was just what I was looking for, something aromatic and yet something still packing a bit of a punch. The tobacco was dark brown and a little sticky - but not to the level a lot of American aromatics are - from the pouch I got the scents of spiced rum, sweet honey, figs treacle. Most of these flavours translated into the smoke (Particularly the honey with a spicy rum note on the back of the palate) and with the addition of the Virginia, Cavendish, Burley and something else (a little twist perhaps?), it was most enjoyable indeed. The tobacco burned well, not too hot, the flavour never wavering all the way to the bottom of the bowl, and by the end of it, I felt very satisfied.

Now on the strengths of my first pouch I bought another a few months later and me oh my, a different beast altogether. The pouch note wasn't as intense, the tobacco a little bit drier to the touch, the flavours weren't as well represented in the smoke as previously - in fact it was quite harsh, quite acrid and the burn rate was accelerated. Despite trying it in several pipes (including a brand new cob), it sadly did not improve.

All the things I had liked and enjoyed from the first pouch were gone in the second. And for that reason I can only give 2 stars; the lack of consistency was quite disappointing and I shan't run the risk of buying it again.

Caveat Emptor...If you do buy yourself a pouch I hope for you that it is like the first one I had and not the second.

GQ Tobaccos - Rum & Honey.

On the contrary to popular opinion I actually find the topping to be more than easy to notice. Straight from the pouch it smells like a full aromatic, being sweet and rummy. It's a very dark mix that does need time to dry some, it's not really wet but still a tad too much to smoke imminently from the pouch.

With the taste, again, my opinion differs to the popular one! I find the aromatics come through with a fair bit of force. My biggest gripe is the temperature of the smoke, oh boy, it's far too warm for me. Nicotine? It's of a good amount, pretty strong but not too much. I find the flavour is consistent throughout, it doesn't fluctuate but stays at the same quantity.

If this were to be marked solely on flavour it could possibly get four stars but sadly due to the temperature I can only award it two.

I like this tobacco but I'm not sure if it's a true aromatic - at least as I know aromatics. My partner tells me the room note is quite pleasing but not really distinctive in the sense that something like Clan is distinctive, and of course while smoking the stuff I can't really pick up on the room note myself. The tobaccos listed in the menu are virginia, cavendish and burley. I think of both Virginia and Burley as smooth, often bland tobaccos so maybe it is the cavendish that gives this its interesting spiceyness. There's none of that artifical chemical taste that ruins many aromatics here and the smoke is quite delicious. Out of the pouch I could smell the rum but also raisins, reminding me of the aroma of a good old school Christmas cake.

It's that tastes out of the bowl that count though and I was drawing good cool smoke from the bowl, through the stem and into my mouth. When I sat back, closed my eyes and concentrated on nothing but the smoke I was getting a richness, sweet not gloopy and nuanced enough to play with my taste buds. It smokes well, is neither too moist nor too dry and the ribbon cut packs easily into the pipe. The smoke is creamy and feels substantial on the tongue. Quite delicious. I went through an ounce of this in two days and as aros go it is a good one, and highly recommended.

The smell of this blend is great, something woody, floral and nutty. The taste is very low bitterness, somewhat sweet and a bit spicy. It burns pretty well. The smoke is very smooth. At the end it has a spicy taste. For sure I will buy it more times.

I am finding myself quite attracted to British aromatics and blends like Rum and Honey is one of the reasons why. Not overly moist to the touch like many American style aromatics, although it does need a little bit of dry time for the best results. In the pouch, it smells lightly sweet with a hint of floral. In the pipe, the thinner cut of the tobacco causes this to be easy to pack and burn wonderfully. The added flavorings, while ever present, don’t overpower one’s ability to taste the tobacco, which is something that I always prefer rather than just the baccy being used to serve up toppings and casing. It burns fairly dry and lovers of typically mild American style aro’s should be aware that there is more nicotine here than found in those blends. Unless an aromatic is very straightforward (i.e. Vanilla) I am not the best at picking out multiple toppings and dissecting them. What I can say is that the rum and honey are evident as is the tobacco flavor. It’s sweet, but not cloying, and there is a touch of spice, but I would not venture out to pick what spices have been added. The flavor of the Brown Twist is ever present too and to me is what really makes this blend. R&H doesn’t bite and it didn’t burn hot for me either. For me personally, great aromatic is one that allows that added flavors to compliment the tobacco rather than overpower it. Such is the case with this terrific blend.

For once the description at the top of the page is spot on. Fresh sample was sticky and bunched up if pinched so I gave it a good hour to dry back in a warm spot. What you do get in this one is a good slow burner and lots more nicotine than most aromatics. I find the smoke to be rich and full and my stomach tells me the vit n is finding it's way down.

If you like dark sticky sweet boozy tobacco then you are in the right place. I think this takes a little bit of effort to get the full enjoyment drying and packing with care but once mastered will give great pleasure. Buy 25 g minimum would be my advice and have a go.

Pouch note is delicious, sweet & fruity. Tobacco is nicely cut, perfect moisture level, packs & lights easily. Taste is very subtle, mild nicotine hit, burns well. A sublime blend perfect for an introduction to aromatics, not at all wet & gloopy, a great all-day smoke.
