Sold under dozens of different names, people buy it more than most other blends. It's not hard to see why. Vanilla and caramel are appealing flavors, especially when not overdone so that you get sick of it. That doesn't happen here. Not much tobacco taste here, except for a little grass and a small hint of tart and tangy citrus from the Virginia. Burns cool and clean at a reasonable pace with a very consistent flavor. Will leave some moisture in your bowl, and requires an average number of relights. No bite, no rough edges or harshness exists here. Offers little nicotine. The strength is mild, and the taste is a couple steps past that mark. Has a short lived, very pleasant after taste and room note. This is one of the quintessential "all day smoking blends", and though it's not a complex mixture, that works to its advantage for people who just want a pleasant, no nonsense, comfortable all day smoke.

So after hearing just about every pipe smoker I've talked to sing the praises of 1Q sense I started I finally ordered 4 ounces of it wanting to see just how good it was especially sense I was told it's basically a high quality version of Captain Black Royal. When the package it came in, along with some Lane Limited BCA, I couldn't wait to open it and load up a bowl. Smelled real good even before I opened the bag. Once I did, the tobacco was nice and fluffy, not overly moist, not sticky, not dried out, just perfect and the wonderful smell was irresistible. So I loaded up a newly bought Peterson bent bulldog I hadn't gotten around to smoking yet, and gave it a light. I knew right away there was no comparison to any Captain Black blend. Very smooth and tasty with 0 bite, and the room note was amazing. It even got the Mrs'. "ok, you can smoke that in the house" stamp of approval. I always get compliments from everyone on the smell whenever I smoke it in public. Only downside, my 4 ounces is nearly gone, but on the upside there's 8 more on the way as I type. This is hands down my favorite aromatic and one I'll keep in my rotation at all times.

I got acquainted with I-Q back in the late 1970s where it was known as "Special #2" at the old Pipe Pub franchise shops located around the southwest.

This is, by far, my all-time favorite aromatic blend. It is nutty, sweet, tastes like tobacco, has some nicotine strength, is very cool burning and is enjoyed tremendously by those non-smokers who happen to be around me while I'm puffing on this classic. Enjoyed by pipe smokers worldwide in droves, it is Lane's all-time top selling blend.

Good anytime, day or night... A true bell ringer!

Sometimes, you cannot do better than the classics. The smell in the pouch is that of golden Cavendish and vaniila and caramel. I have also described the smoke aroma, but just know that the vanilla and caramel is much less pronounced than you might think. The tobacco is nice and the smoke is satisfying if you keep in mind what this is and remember what it is not. I love Burley tobacco and I love the strong stuff like Peterson's Irish Flake. This is just a good aromatic that both the smoker and the people around them can enjoy. I have grown tired of heading outside to the heat and humidity or to the cold and rain just to have a smoke. This tobacco keeps me inside and in front of the TV. The flavor lasts down to the bottom of the bowl and there is no goop left behind if you smoke this properly. That is, slowly sip and pack just a bit lighter than you might a good Burley. I can see why this is the number one selling tobacco in the US. The ash is fine, but not a pure grey. Even the ash in the ashtray smells nice. Smokers can use all the friends they can get right now and this one would certainly make friends and influence people.

It's hard to argue with the best selling bulk tobacco in the world.

This is a wonderful blend of quality Virginia and Cavendish leaf mixed with a wonderful vanilla flavoring. To me the flavoring is almost pastry like and carries nicely into the smoke as long as you keep your palate moist and chew on the smoke. By that I mean swish it around your mouth a second or two before exhaling to let the flavors really hit your palate.

It comes at close to perfect moisture level. There really isn't any airing time needed for this or many of Lane Limited's blends.

1Q takes a charring and true light wonderfully and burns nice and evenly to a fine white ash. It doesn't gurgle or bite or burn overly hot. And most importantly it doesn't leave your pipe with a goopy mess.

The room note is terrific. Most people mention smelling roasting marshmallows when I smoke this blend in public.

If you're looking for a go-to aromatic or just a nice aromatic to take a break from other styles this is definitely worth checking out. Since it's in bulk you can sample it without breaking the bank.

I'm giving this 4 stars for a couple of reasons. First, it never pretends to be something it's not, and what it is is a very fine mild aromatic blend that burns great, tastes good and never offends even the most finicky bystander. Second, for the price, it can't be beat for an everyday, or even an 'on occasion' smoke. For under $32 a pound it's cheaper than your typical drug store blend and there's no excuse not to keep some on hand if you like a mild, pleasant smoke. For more body try mixing this in equal parts with Carter Hall and smoke it in a corn cob pipe. Very enjoyable and an improvement over just 1Q alone IMO.

A favorite aromatic for me - maybe one of my top handful. Nothing disagreeable here - good flavor, great aroma (both in the jar and in the room). It packs, lights, and puffs very nicely. A bit more forgiving in the Bite area than many other aromatics. I can easily understand how this is an "all day smoker" for some folks. There is no reason to say no.

I don't smoke aromatics often and when I do I tend to look to the more "high end" aromatics. The fact is that there is a reason why this is one of the top selling aromatics today and 1Q has forced me to rethink my aro purchases.

This is a solid aromatic at a great price point. Sweet, but not overly so. The tobacco flavor still comes through and it is mild and pleasant. It doesn't goop up the bowl and is a fine tobacco to try as an introduction to aromatics. It does need to be dried and the only drawback for both aromatic lovers and those that like to dabble is that 1Q lacks the depth can can be found in other aromatics. Recommended.

First things first! If you are not an aromatic smoker or are open to smoking aromatics, SCRAM! Move on down the road, this is not meant for you. You too english smokers, even though the latakia you so love is really an aromatic as in added flavor, you won't like this so go on, go to the next review.

Now, let's get down to a serious review here of a good aromatic. For some reason I have neglected to write a review on this blend. That said, I am amending that as of right now. This is the number one selling blend in the country if not the world! There is a reason for this. It's good! Simple enough. It has a sweet vanilla flavor to it but not overwhelming. It is mild as a kitten with no claws. It will not burn the tongue, smells absolutely wonderful both in the pouch and in the room note. It packs well in the pipe in spite of being somewhat moist, it lights easily and stays lit burning in a nice slow and relaxing way. It is not cloying and it does not leave a pipe smelling like a fruit bowl. No wonder it's number one and then add it is easily available and for a great price. It is a mixed medium to dark brown ribbon cut. It burns down slowly to a fine grey ash with a touch of dottle and a little moisture so pipe cleaners are a must. I could not make this an all day blend like a lot of others but it is a great blend for the sweet tooth and for just relaxing. A crowd pleasure for sure. A great blend for a beginner and an experienced smoker that does not want a huge nicotne fix or has a sensitive mouth. I highly recommend this blend to be tried by all...that are open to aromatics. The others will just miss a good thing in this one!

I experimented with this for a while but ultimately have come to similar conclusions as other reviewers. The blend will not dry out properly, it always leaves moist ash, often burns hot, will not stay lit, and doesn't taste as good as it smells, either.

I am a relatively new piper (six months) but this is the first tobacco to earn the distinction of being pulled from my "stuff to smoke" pile and be moved to my newly created "give away or toss" pile.

If this is representative of Lane tobacco, I'm very unimpressed.

I stopped into my neighborhood B&M. The guy admitted that he was mostly a cigar smoker, but that this (they call it "Ladies Love It") was their best seller. I bought an ounce, and have been in love ever since! If you are an aromatic smoker, how can you not love this?!?! It packs, lights, and smokes easily. It never bites, and it gets even more delicious as you get closer to the bottom of the bowl. Finally, like the title suggests, the ladies DO love it! Never had anything but compliments about 1Q. Plus, you can get it EVERYWHERE (under dozens of different names)!! It is what you'll find in my pouch, and usually in my pipe!

Update (12/26/2012): I got some more of this from my Secret Santa yesterday completely by accident! She only knew that I liked to smoke a pipe and had never bought pipe tobacco before. So, she stopped by her local B&M and got me an ounce of their "24K", not knowing what it was. Anyway you name it, it's still 1-Q! Lucky for me!! Thanks, Santa!!

I'm fairly new to pipe smoking and a friend of mine gave me a small bag of the 1-Q to try out when I picked up a few corn cob pipes. This stuff smells great in the bag and tastes great during the smoke. Like I said, I'm a novice here and am continuing to learn more about pipe smoking and types of tobaccos that I enjoy, but the 1-Q is really a great combination of light aroma and flavor. The flavor is not overpowering and the smoke is cool with a little sweetness from the Cavendish. I think this will continue to be my standard for a while.

You can't go wrong here. I do notice that if I'm looking for a bit more flavor or punch, I'll have to find another aromatic with a stronger more consistent flavor during the smoke, but overall, this will do fine, especially with the very pleasant room note.

I tried this blend and found it to be a very friendly smoke. It's tasty, mild and a comfort smoke. it's a blend that can be an everyday smoke. Others have mentioned that it's nothing more than Captain Black. I disagree ..... while it does resemble CB slightly .... it's much smoother ...... another level above. 1-Q is become one of my favorite smokes. I will smoke this daily ... I recommend this to beginners and veterans alike. If you like a tobacco that is mild ..... no bite ...... tasty ...then you should definitely try 1-Q. I understand why this is one of the most popular tobacco blends. It's very yummy! It has a well disguised sweet caramel, vanilla taste but subdued. It is one of my two favorite smokes ...the other being Butternut Burley! The price makes this blend truly a bargain. I will keep it well stocked.

Lane Limited - 1-Q.

Been on a bit of an aromatic trip lately, and as I love vanilla aro's the most out of that genre I popped 1Q open this morning.

Rather than the tobacco being contained in paper with a card top, this one's paper with a clear plastic disc topping it. It's nicely hydrated, and although it's listed as containing only Golden Cavendish and Virginia, there's a few black pieces too.

The smoke's a good one. The flavour is prominently vanilla with only a mild tobacco taste: honey and hay. I find a good burn requires a bit of effort to initiate, it goes out easily for the inaugurate few minutes. But once a burn has established itself it gives an independent one. At the beginning I have to give my bowl some firm puffs whilst getting it going, and even while I'm sucking like mad, the smoke doesn't bite. The smoke's temperature is the expected one for a Cavendish blend: cool, and the room-note's very nice indeed. If you smoke for nicotine this won't do for you: it's very mild.

Vanilla aromatics have long been a regular addition to my rotation, they normally take the role of the evening smoke. This is one of the best of its kind, it has to have four stars:

Just to add another 2 cents worth, Lane 1Q is a pleasant smoke anytime and anywhere. Gently sweet, a room note that is among the best in the industry, and doesn't really ghost a pipe. A great introduction to the hobby of pipe smoking and worthy to be a "go to" blend for anyone who likes a mild aromatic. Most who find this too moist or note a wet bowl bottom might benefit from packing a bit more loosely and puffing a bit more slowly. Properly executed, 1Q is a refreshing and very forgiving tobacco that I enjoy often. It is also a remarkable value.

The Horror---------The Horror.

I need to take a long hard look at myself. I bought a pound of this stuff and I am sorry. Its wet when you open the stylish ziplock bag, its wet when you leave it to dry for a fortnight. It'll burn hot and steamy, halfway down the bowl, then gurgle and put itself out. It is just so wet. It tastes like chemical ---------something and its not an aromatic crowd pleaser either. It will destroy any pipe so only use a dedicated old Pete system pipe cause its easier to wash out with metho. If you like this stuff then I'm sorry I've been so rude and good luck to you.

As I mostly smoke virginia/VaPer blends, I'm going to review this based on what it is rather than what it is not.

I usually have a couple of ounces of this in my tobacco bar. It is a nicely flavored cavendish aromatic mixture that is light on the palate but with a pleasant vanilla taste and aroma. Not nearly as flavorful as my other two "standard" aromatics (McClellands #2050 and Stokkebye's French Vanilla), perhaps I smoke this because this is what I started on decades ago. My first tobacco was Captain Black Royal, and this is its higher quality "tobacco shop" counterpart. At my age, romance is where it finds you - usually in the reminiscence phase!

If you're looking for complexity, you won't find it here. It's not geared for that. It's purpose is a simple, mild smoke that is a nice palate cleanser for a later headier blend. Very inoffensive to both smoker and those around him. And if it bites, SLOW DOWN!!!! Everyone that is not adverse to aromatics should try this once. There's a reason it's the best selling premium bulk tobacco.

If you like this blend, you have to admit to yourself that you like captain black. It's frustrating seeing so many people compliment this blend while making disparaging remarks about OTC's like captain black. 1Q IS captain black royal. no if's and's or but's. I myself find it to be very unpleasant. The disgusting sour taste that creeps in halfway through the bowl. How artificial and chemically the flavoring is. How wet/goopy/greasy the tobacco is to the touch. This blend will absolutely ghost a pipe with that sour chemically layer of soot. In my novice days I had to resuscitate many a pipe after exposing them to this blend and other blends like it. My advice is to skip all captain black blends.

Oh with the hype surrounding this blend,,i finally had the chance to try it out during the chicago pipe show..i ended up with 2 pounds purchase eventually!!! the blend is fine ribbon cut that seems to be dipped in molasses, luckely that is not the character it reflects throughout the smoke. very consistant blend, burns without problem leaving fine ash and some times few dottels if u smoke it fast, taste reminds me of captain black some where between gold and royal but this one have a better quality casing to it and lacks the combustion heat that the former blend produce. price is reasonably cheap when purchased in bulk, the room note is acceptable by many and the only draw back it has is the fine cut which makes it burn fast leaving you craving for more. i would smoke this blend slowly as it can hit u back where it hurts (yes your tounge).

I have only smoked one bowl of this, but I see it fit to review. i love smoking Lane's straight black Cavendish (BCA) so I was pleased to hear that this had golden Cavendish in it. This blend was sweet, smooth, delightfully aromatic, and did not bite my tongue. I say that for new pipe smokers it is a must-try, and for the seasoned smoker who wants to break away from the heavy stuff with something that can please he/she and the people around.

Call me crazy, but after almost 20 years of smoking a Pipe, I have come back to this blend. I have smoked and still enjoy VaPers, English, and other Aromatics, but this tobacco is truly an American Original. What I do is mix 6 ounces of 1-Q with 2 ounces of cubed burley, and all I can say is FANTASTIC!! Granted, it not the most complex of blends, and many think adding cubed burley would make it hotter, but it does not bother me! I smoke about a pound of pipe tobacco a month, and this is currently my all day mixture. It has to be the #1 selling pipe tobacco for a reason! I am not and never will be one of those "Tobacco Snobs"...smoke what you like and enjoy!! Happy Puffing!

The jungle drums said this was a huge seller, everyone is smoking it. Maybe they meant once. I found it smoked wet with not that good of a taste; but worst of all it coated the rim of my pipe with goop. Not a blend I wanted to keep; so I split my bulk package into several and gave them away for others to try...maybe it became a favorite of theirs...or not.

If you have ever purchased bulk pipe tobacco from a brick and mortar shop, you have almost certainly smoked Lane Limited 1-Q. But you probably bought something with a proprietary name other than 1-Q, Willshire at Tinderbox, for example. This mixture has been the best selling bulk in the United States for decades under a plethora of names.

Basically, 1-Q is Captain Black Blue with less humectant (propylene glycol). It may be that 1-Q uses a better grade leaf, but personally I doubt it. But it is not as moist as CB Blue, and smoked slowly it leaves less goop in the pipe.

Open the bag and you find a mixture consisting of about 75% ribbon cut golden Virginia and 25% black cavendish. The dark tobacco is blackened Green River Burley. In contrast to Captain Black White (and its bulk sibling RLP-6) this is predominately a light rather than black mixture with a slightly brighter taste.

The sniff test reveals vanilla. Light up, and it is not difficult to get an even light, and you will note in the flavor a combination of vanilla, chocolate, and maybe a touch of caramel. The room note is a real winner variously described as toasting marshmallows or baking cookies. Few if any pipe tobaccos elecit more compliments on the smell from non smokers. Although not as moist as the CB Royal, 1-Q is still a pretty moist mixture, but you have no difficulty keeping it lit with a relaxed puffing cadence.

The taste is milder than the fulsome room note would indicate. When the pipe is done you will find a little gray dottle, but again less than you would expect from a mixture with a decidedly sweet room note. Unless you puff wildly 1-Q does not bite. The nicotine level is well below medium. Many smokers will like this aspect, although those who like a full nicotine kick will find it a bit wimpy in that regard.

Is this a gourmet blend? Of course not. But the chances are that you are in the mood for a hamburger more often than for prime rib. Likewise budget issues may steer you toward the hamburger more often. This bulk blend is easy on the budget. If you are looking for a smoke at the high end of the complexity scale you might well choose something else. Although 1-Q does have a significant coterie of pipesters who smoke it and it alone, I personally find it best as a utility tobacco. I suspect that will be true of many others.

Use pipes dedicated to aromatics, or else choose a cob or meerschaum. 1-Q will ghost a pipe.

Aromatic pipe tobaccos are the best sellers by far. There are many who smoke only this type of pipe tobacco. Likewise there are many who get the majority of their smokes from the aromatic range. Of the remainder, quite a few will puff happily on an aromatic as a change of pace. Each of these groups will likely find 1-Q a satisfying experience.

There is a minor segment of pipe smokers who eschew aromatics. There is probably a larger group of these on this board than in the pipe smoking world at large. Aromatic haters need not try 1-Q!

Less icky than BCA, but not my idea of what tobacco was intended for. It is the McDonald's cheeseburger of tobaccos. It is like eating, and cheap but ultimately rather unsatisfying compared to grown-up food. For all that it does smell rather pleasant and isn't as bad as some tobaccos. If you need a sweet introduction to tobacco here you go.

The best selling pipe tobacco in the U.S...

In fact this has little tobacco taste. It comes very moist, but burns surprisingly well. It comes across my palate like caramel dipped fruit. Pleasant, but not a taste I really care for.

Pack it on the loose side, puff very gently, and infrequently, and you will avoid tongue bite.

You also will keep the moisture from building up in your pipe. This is a very sweet, straightforward blend. Too sweet for me, but it does smell nice.

It is indeed an American classic. Many pipesmokers in America both started and stayed with this.

Lane Limited is slowly but surely reducing the number of blends it produces, and some day, when this one fades into glory, it will be sorely missed...

Just not by me!

1-Q has a lot of amazing properties that make it vastly appealing to the pipe smoking crowd. The pipe never gets too hot, just warm. The smoke is always smooth, virtually no bite, smokable all day. The tobacco doesn't surprise you with heat or bad taste halfway down the bowl. It arrives with hands-down perfect consistency and moisture. A great taste and a great aroma; it is commonly said to be a blend that both the smoker and the smokers' acquaintances will at the least tolerate. All of these factors make it a great choice for anyone on the totem pole.

The small downside was that I couldn't taste all the flavors until I was done smoking (but that's pretty much expected for me!)

I have been a pipe smoker for over 30 years and have smoked mostly non aromatic and English blends for the last two decades. I as of late have been revisiting aromatics that I have more or less ignored for so many years. I remember smoking this blend back in the 70's and 80's and enjoying it. This blend is made up of nice cavendish, toasted cavendish, and some VA ribbon that contributes to a nutty sweet flavor profile. Finally as mentioned in most of the reviews of this blend the room note is quite appealing. I really like this blend and will be adding it to my new rotation of aromatics.

I tried Lane 1Q at the urging of a friend and based on reviews and I was quite pleased! Easily a daily smoke, I buy this in bulk and love it. Folks around always have a positive comment on its aroma. Its mild in the nicotine department and I recommend it to new pipe smokers regularly.

I love this tobacco. No particular part of it stands out, but it is a good solid mix of tobaccos, that burns cool, and has absolutely no tongue bite. It is really a great all day smoke and lends a great aroma to wherever you are smoking. It is, after all, the number one selling bulk pipe tobacco in the country.

My wife bought my first pipe for me for Christmas along with three samples of tobacco. Lane 1Q under a local tobacconist's label was one of them. I instantly loved it and after trying and liking a huge variety of tobaccos, I still love it.

It is smooth, flavorful, has the best room note, and burns to the bottom of the bowl with ease. I have my first pipe, a Wiley freehand, with a large bowl dedicated to it.

I like it so much, I keep a pound in the cellar.

Update Took away a star. This blend is good as an aro, but it isn't "knock your socks of good." It's more or less a better Captain Black White. So, if you like sweet aro's you should enjoy this blend. If you don't, avoid it, and don't give it bad reviews because you don't have a sweet tooth.

I purchased this tobacco from a smokeshop under the name "Wellington." It was love at first smoke. It's not something I want to smoke every day, maybe once a week, but it sure is good. I'll definitely purchase it again.

1-Q is nutty, sweet, and tastes like tobacco. It took me a while to get the sweetness, because I didn't realize my estate briar was making all my burley's more bitter than they really were. I tried it in a brand new briar, and the sweetness suddenly stood out...

The tobacco smokes very well, stays fairly cool, isn't goopy, and needs few relights. It has a enough nicotine to notice, which is more than I can say for Captain Black. Though like the former brand, I get many compliments on the aroma it leaves behind.

I don't know why the blend doesn't get better reviews. Maybe I just got an abnormally good batch of tobacco; or I just haven't been smoking long enough (I've only been smoking for a year now). Either way, compared to Captain Black it tastes better, is less goopy, smells almost just as good, and leaves a much better aftertaste. Oh, and last thing, did I mention that it's inexpensive?

I?ve been smoking tobacco pipes for a little over 3 years now and I would have to say that this is one of my favorites. I am still relativily new to the world of Pipe tobaccos and my knowledge is very limited but, as of right now, 1-Q is 5 star. I bought bag at a tobacconist in Moscow, ID and after my first bag, I had to get some for my private stash. The Tobacconist called it ?Smokey?s Supreme?. Even though the other tobaccos I have in my stash stay pretty dry, this one remains moist under the same circumstances... kind of odd. If you arn?t carful about how you are smoking, this tobacco can heat the pipe up faily quickly and give a little tongue bite, it took me a few bowls to figure it out. The pipe I?m using is some cheap churchwarden knock off from the Czech Republic.

The room aroma is fantasic! I think it is just the right amount of vanilla and caramel and it doesn?t overpower the senses. The taste isn?t as strong as I would have liked but, if you?re standing in front of your tobacco case wondering what to smoke 1-Q or BCA. The price is also one of the bonuses. This tobacco is REALLY inexpensive (God bless the bulk varieties...) so you can hang on to large amounts for you stash and do all kinds of experimenting. I would strongly recommend this tobacco to anyone, veterans and newcomers alike. Enjoy!

Simply a great tobacco. I bought it first from justforhim.com under the name of "just for him" tobacco. It has deep hints of vanilla and maybe caramel, and its aroma is delightful. This is definitely a good evening smoke with a cup of tea. It also works well as cigarette tobacco for all you RYO's out there.

Man, i gotta say, after my inital attempts at pipe smoking in college-- with a grabow and cherry borkum riff or captain black-- i was turned off to aromatic tobaccos, but recently picked up some 1Q (sold by my tobacconist as yorkshire) as sort of a token of appreciation to my wife who'd bought me a nice mastro beraldi oom paul. i figured she deserved to encounter me smoking something other than a latakia rich blend ( i happen to think latakia smells terrific and occasionally she'll compliment me on a latakia blend--most notably odyssey, believe it or not). surpisingly, i get good tobacco flavor from this stuff. the addition of the fire cured is what really makes this blend for me. also as an eenglish/balkan and va/per smoker, i must confess to envying those who walk past puffing a nice vanilla/creamy/chocolate scented pipe tobacco. with 1Q i can do so without feeling queasy and/or burning my tongue.

I actually buy quite a bit of this. It is handy to have a blend that visitors can remark "Now that smells very nice"... though I always suspect they actually mean "Your other tobaccos smell very bad!".

But occasionally I just want something bland when I'm alone even, so I have to say, even though this is kind of the "newbie" blend, I actually do poke it into a pipe and smoke it... often the first smoke of the day.

But the main reason I use so much is that I can use it to cut other blends if they're a little too strong for me or if I need a little "figgier" texture. I keep two bowls* of Larry's Blend Latakia, for instance, one at full strength and one cut 25% with 1Q (infidel!!). It also mixes well with Louisiana Red and comes out close to Anniversary Kake with a little more punch at around half and half!

I smoke a lot of pipes each day and my tastes change rapidly, so this particular inexpensive blend helps me give myself a wider variety.

Update 7/15/07: Well last night I had another fortunate accident while dishing out a sample of 1Q for a beginning friend. I put a quarter cup of 1Q in the envelope, thought a while and then reached up to get my bowl to give him another 1/4 cup... but accidentally grabbed the trout stream which was sitting next to the 1Q (at a glance they look a lot alike). I should have smelled the butterscotch scent of the trout stream but somehow wasn't paying enough attention... ended up with a new mix that wow golly I really like! Trout Queue... I love it! Already smoked 4 loads of this stuff today and it's only 3pm. Tell ya what, if you want to really help a newbie find a blend he can make all by himself, this will be a good one. The full blown trout stream tends to get a little hot midway and lose its fullness... somehow the 1Q picks it up and runs the rest of the way to the goal and does a back flip!

*I keep my bulk blends in 2-cup Pyrex bowls with a snap-on lid. These stack nicely and are clear on the sides so I can easily identify them in the stack, and I simply tape the name of the tobacco on top of the lid. Makes it very easy to load my pipe right over the bowl.

This is not what I think of as a tobacco. It looks like tobacco but I really don't taste anything other than an occasional whips of vanilla. Don't expect this to help if you need a Nick hit either. I did finish my 2oz. bulk but I usually smoke outside at night. This blend has to be smoked during the day so you know if it is lit or not (OK that might be extreme but it makes the point)!

There isn't much more for me to say about this blend that hasn't been said already. I do have an interesting story about 1Q and am wondering if anybody has heard this rumor. I used to get custom blended tobacco from a guy that had a smoke shop from the 50's to the 80's and then he was blending in his garage in his house. The story goes that Lane blended this tobacco for President Eisenhower. They named it 1Q for the public but named it 'Ike' internally for when he would have it ordered. I dont know if this is true or not but I heard it from a couple of old timers that knew alot about the pipe business and its golden age.

Aromatics have a place in my tobacco rotation, but they don't dominate it - I keep a variety on hand. I have probably smoked this at one time or other, but only recently did I place an order for 1-Q by name. Upon first sampling the blend, I was surprised by the quality of the base tobacco flavor. Don't get me wrong, it was by no means spectacular, but its there and its not bad.

The flavoring was another surprise. I expected it to over ride the tobacco, but instead it was nicely balanced. Also, great burn, no bite, no nasty after-taste. This is a very well behaved aromatic that doesn't stand head and shoulders above the field but does hold its own.

Sometimes you just want a no nonsense tobacco to throw in your pipe and go. I see a place for easy smoking, relaxing, “all day” smokes in my rotation. I cut my teeth on Bur/Va/Cav blends such as Captain Black - Original so I always have a bit of nostalgia for these kind of aromatics.

I think the absence of burley makes this blend age slightly better than some aromatics I’ve had. In my experience, burley ages a blend like fine milk so it’s absence makes this a good blend to cellar. It mostly just melds the flavors together a bit more so don’t expect anything exceptional from the aging, but at least it won’t ruin the blend and make it taste like ash and dust.

The topping is neither light nor heavy and sits comfortably in that Goldilocks “just right” zone. The vanilla and caramel come through more than anything else, but you can still taste tobacco, unlike some heavier aromatics I’ve tried. The Virginia gives this blend a light but solid enough body that a lot of aromatics seem to lack. Between the warm vanilla and rich caramel I occasionally get some light notes of citrus, grass and hay. The cavendish doesn’t take up too much of the mixture and only comes through as a rare (but welcome) note of dusty old cellar. The overall blend has a warm toasty, bread like undertone that comes through more toward the middle and bottom of the bowl.

Overall, this is a good all day blend that you can maybe get away with smoking indoors. It smokes nice and cool and has a good amount of smoke in spite of the lack of burley. Good for something light in the morning and pairs well with coffee. I always make sure to keep a few ounces of this lying around, even if I don’t smoke it everyday.

I did not care for this at all.. I found it to be harsh and bites bad. I got it at a local tobacco shop in Wichita, there are not many in town. The pipe smoker guy said 1-Q sales more that all the others in the shop. so I bought a ounce and brought it home to try. I might be to new to catch all the little things of the tobacco but I got a hard bite of dirt taste or mouth, it was to strong and got no better as I smoked down the bowl. the room note was not that good it has a smell of cheep cig's ashy kind of. once again I could be to new to like this tobacco and need to grow in to it, I have read on here and other sites that sometimes that happens. maybe in 6mo I'll try a few more bowls the 5 or so I have tried in the last week I did not like even a little

1Q has to be the very best perfume puffing tobacco in existance. This is a high quality aromatic blend that will not bite. The flovor is mostly tobacco with some swetnesss coming from the flavoring. Speaking of the flavoring, I have no idea what it is or even how to describe it. I can tell you that the smell of smoldering 1Q is what pops in peoples minds when they think of a pipe. Especially those who say they love the smell of a pipe. Don't beleive them, they love the smell of 1Q! Don't beleiveme, fill your pipe with a good Balkan mixture and ask um if they still love the smell of a pipe. I typically am of the opinion that, like cheese, the more foul the smell of the tobacco the better the flavor. 1Q is the exception to this rule. It is a high quality blend that gives perfume puffers a leg to stand on. What can I say, I like it!!!

Ok, I know everyone talks bad about 1Q. Here is the deal. I've had many aromatics and pretty much, they all seem about the same to me. I seem to return to this blend because it tastes a little better. I get better results smoking it out of smaller bowls. It seems like the taste lasts longer.

I've been smoking for about a year & I typically smoke full bodied Nicaraguan cigars, so no matter what I do, it seems to me that pipe smoke is always a little more mild. I've tried English blends and personally, they smell like campfire smoke & I can't smoke them indoors, which is why I moved to pipe (to smoke indoors). The 1Q blend I don't get a lot of positive comments on from spouse as far as aroma, but I like how it smells. It does not burn hot, at least it doesn't for me.

I get the sense that there is a group of people who want other people to think that there is "so much more" to pipe smoking outside of the typical aromatic blends you can get from your local shop. Personally, I think it's a lot of BS. There's no way pipe smoke has nearly the nicotine levels as cigar and cigarette smoke. I'm not sure it's supposed to.

I do get some wet dottle at the bottom of the bowl with 1Q, but I get those with other aromatics too. You dump it out and let your pipe dry for a few days. Run a pipe cleaner through it and let it sit. Viola!!

More than anything else, I wanted to comment on another reviewer's (HoopleHead) remarks, not only regarding 1Q, but also similar blends that are sold in bulk by Lane or Altadis.

1Q is a good blend, particularly for new pipe smokers and can stand quite well on it's own merits. But using such blends as 1Q, BCA, RP-6, Black Cavendish and the like, to mix with English or Balken blends has a lot of merit as well. I've been doing for several years and will be the first to admit if I find 1 blend in 5 that you might say is a "keeper", I'm doing well. But it only takes a small amount of tobacco to produce a "trial" blend and I can almost always tell from only one or two bowls if I've hit upon something I'll end up using.

So before you veterans write off such blends as 1Q, you might want to see what a 2/1 Gawith Balken Flake/1Q would taste like. That's probably not a very good example, but I'm sure you get the picture. And not only will you ocassionally come up with a better tasting blend by cutting it with some of the milder flavored bulk blends such as 1Q, you will also save a few bucks in the process. And besides, it's fun.:)

I owe my rather brief acquaintance with 1Q to an East Coast philosophy lecturer who, by the time I met him, had switched sides to become a Regius Professor at a Texan University. I was out of tobacco, just holding my empty pipe, while in transit at Houston Airport. He sat next to me (you could still smoke inside the airport in those days) and we chatted about pipes, tobacco, and eventually about XIXth century German philosophers. He offered me some 1Q, as it was the only blend his wife would allow him to smoke (he bought the stuff by the pound and had plenty to spare).

As I already was a London Mixture-965 smoker, I found 1Q extremely bland, sweet and goopy, but with a very nice room aroma. I enjoyed the batch he gave me. A typical drug store blend, slightly similar to Captain Black (but not as meaty), it burnt rather quickly. More than building cake inside the bowl, it left a crystallized sugar layer that rendered my pipe useless. I really appreciated his gesture, but I never bought 1Q again.

I find 1-Q a brilliant smoke. It's quality is not so much in any one particular strength; its brilliance is in the way it subtly blends so many mild qualities together in a gentle way. I'll admit I am biased. It was the second tobacco I smoked and I immediately fell in love. Two years later, I am not any less entranced.

1-Q, for all its simplicity, is a gentle, calming smoke. Nothing overpowers, but everything blends together to be completely enjoyable. It's flavor is mild but comes through clearly, it is very mild in strength so you enjoy the smoke for what is it and not what it does to you; it's mild flavor and taste has hints of vanilla from the topping and roasted almond from the burley, The room note is pleasantly present, nice to have around but does not demand attention. Nothing about the smoke stands out, but like an old friend, you simply enjoy it for what it is, not what you want it to be.

The epitome of an all day smoke. You can smoke it without paying attention and simply enjoy the moment, or you can savor it to pick out all the delicacies and nuances, which are not deep or complex, but like an old romance, the deeper you look, the more you appreciate. So much good, it can be underrated, but it is so popular, that it is appreciated. I give it three stars because nothing stands out, but taken as a whole, it is an excellent smoke for those who enjoy aromatics. Pick up a tin or a bag and sit back and relax with a very mellow, enjoyable smoke.

Personally, I think 1-Q as the number 1 selling bulk blend is overrated. I bought 2oz from smokingpipes.com, it came fairly moist, what seems to be norm with this blend, had to air dry it for a good 2-3 hours. Pouch note is very pleasant but more pronounced than the taste. I confess being disappointed with 1-Q's taste, maybe the so many positive reviews overbuilt my expectations, what I found is a tobacco that is not bland or bad, but doesn't do much in terms of flavour. The topping is a mix of custard with floral stuff, maybe rose water, hard to describe, it tastes pretty mild but is enough to cover the natural Va, burley and cavendish flavours, which in my opinion would be more interesting than the dominating flavouring. Again, there is nothing wrong with this baccy, but I actually prefer CB Original over it.

Like others I discovered this doesn't dry out. It has the hydrodynamics of a liberals brain. No matter.

It smokes readily enough. Stays alight with ease.

I detect a tenuous taste of tobacco through the artificial caramel and vanilla. A lot of things use artificial flavouring. Shampoo, candy, deodorant. I can live with it.

I wouldn't say there's a burn at a particular spot on the rear roof of my mouth, more an unpleasant acid sensation.

All in all, not very nice. It needs to be really cheap. If it was the only baccy left on earth I would smoke beedis.

An hour after each smoke my mouth had the feel of the underside of a witches tit.

After reading lots of great reviews and even a video of someone purchasing and cellaring 5lbs of the stuff, I ordered 2oz and was terribly disappointed. For those who say it's the same thing Lane Captain Black Royal, it's very close indeed. The tin note is nice but when you smoke it, it's extremely artificial or chemical. I gave it a shot 3 times and no pleasure here, whatsoever. Makes me wonder how such a bad tobacco can be so popular.... There are much better aromatics out there, stay away from this stuff but if you do like it, give Mac Baren 7 Seas Royal a try. It's a better version of this blend and will deliver the taste that you're looking for.

The old farts love this stuff (I say this with respect and veneration- one day too I shall qualify as a Pipe-Smoking Old Fart and will be quite proud to be one) and it’s easy to tell why; bright Virginias give it a nice light and airy feel with lots of soft vanilla throughout embedded in the sweet Cavendish.

Sweet but not overly so the Tanginess of the Virginias keep it at an even keel.

This is a Tobacco-shop standby and the stuff usually moves by the pound-full.

Is it amazing? No, but if you’re driving or doing some chores—there’s’ nothing better.

Well, I finally tried the famous 1-Q and I was less than impressed. I guess there is some diasagreement of whether this is a Captain Black blend in bulk or not. I guess to me it doesn't matter. I have now tried this, CBW and CBR. I won't reorder any and I would put this in the middle and would say it is slightly better than CBW, which I abhorred and a little less enjoyable than CBR, which I found alright.

CBW turned me off by the overwhelming sweetness and the highly chemical taste. This was a lot like that to my taste, but less sweet. With the less sweetness, it seems that chemical taste was stronger. The topping seemed to even lessen as the bowl progressed and I just seemed to taste more chemical and hot air.

I know this blend has its fans which makes me want to go two stars, but I just can't see anyway I could recommend this. I hate to use price as any justification on a blend, because to me it is the last chance of salvation for a review. I thought about bulk Aromatics and what I like. That being the Peter Stokkebye blends. I really liked PS's Nougat so I thought I would price check the two for a comparison. The PS, to me, is far superior to this and is cheaper.

Thus my justification to the one star review. To me, there is no redeeming quality to his blend.

Lane Limited's 1-Q? I've got good news and bads new about this popluar traditional blend.

The bad? It's a super-cheap-dime-store-tobacco masquerading as a quality smoke at your local tobacconist, that taste like cardboard, is loaded with chemicals and juiced up with Vanilla flavor to mask the cheap Virginias and fool the masses with a pleasent aroma.

The good?? Theres plenty of it!

New to pipes, I looked around online and this seemed like a favorite. I'm not sure why. It smells nice and it's cheap, but that's about it. The plastic, chemical undertone and aftertaste, while not nearly as bad as Captain Black Regular, is still unpleasant. It's also one of the more difficult of the tobaccos I've tried (five so far) to keep lit. I'm glad I tried other tobaccos, otherwise this and CBR would have made me give up pipes at the start.

Room note is ok but it has very little flavor. It seems Lane has relied on the glycol for furnishing the flavor as well as serving as a humectant. It is so soaked with propylene glycol it is nearly impossible to light. Surprisingly, it doesn't bite and it leaves little goop in the bowl considering how wet it smokes. I suppose I could have tried to dry it out but it had so much glycol in it that I could have set it on a sunlit rock for decades and it would remained imcombustable. I like aros but this stuff is awful.

I was excited to try this since it was recommended to me buy a guy i bought a pipe from and the guy at the tobacco store said its a top seller. basically bought enough for a couple bowls. tried one right away. lit it up meh its ok i felt like it got worse as i went on. not a really good flavor it smelt decent tho just really nothing to write home about. i didnt even finish the whole bowl. just really didnt like it. gave me kind of a sick feeling like after you eat something thats not that great but you eat it anyway thats what i got just overall not that impressed. i give it 1 star just because it started off alright and no tongue bite. maybe someday i will give it another whirl but not something im buying anytime soon.

This was the first blend I ever tried, so it is appropriate as a first review.

This is a thoroughly mild blend all the way through. There will be no complaints about the aroma or the pouch smell. This is one that non-smokers will ask to sniff. No complaints there. Nicotine is there, but only just. Even as my smoking methods have gotten better, I find this leaves a horrid goop in a pipe at the end. I only smoke this in my 'daily Grabow', and typically use a filter to try and cut back some of the impact of the sweeteners.

Hindsight being 20-20, I wish I had not started on this blend, as it is overly sweet beyond the natural flavors, and leaves the pipe a syrupy mess. I came to expect this as a default in pipe tobaccos, and almost dropped the hobby until I tried some better quality blends. I have an ounce or so left, and may smoke it occasionally in the future, but only on a reminiscent whim and only on a filter. I will not make a concentrated effort to keep this around.

I would recommend other Lane blends such as Cavendish Slices, or even BCA, for a bulk Cavendish-rich but not so sweet experience.

I always wanted to try this, once I heard it was a sort of bulk Captain Black. I had to ask a tobaccanist (Fairhaven Smoke Shop in Bellingham, Washington -- excellent little hole-in-the-wall shop) which of his bulk blends was actually I-Q, and he provided me with a nice sample.

I like this. Tastes of vanilla and caramel, with a room note that should offend no one. I would recommend this to a new pipe smoker over Captain Black, because the flavor and casing are not as excessive. Once you've smoked you pipe a few years, this will probably no longer satisfy, but comes in handy when you need a blend such as this -- might even get you allowed indoors.

There's not much that I can say here that hasn't been addressed in the 50 reviews before mine. This really is the basic, everyday cavendish primarily flavored with vanilla. Its not the best, most flavorful, most complex vanilla cavendish out there, but its better than the drug store brands. Well worth the price one pays for it. Just a few quick notes:

Pouch Aroma--Vanilla. Sometimes a bit too sweet smelling, but sometimes it's just right.

Packing--Easy enough. Its less gooey that Capt Black and his drug store buddies, and generally packs fairly cleanly.

Burn--This is one of the spots where I've always found 1Q to outperform most of its otherwise similar counterparts. It burns slow, cool, and smooth and rarely (if ever) bites the tongue. The burn is fairly uniform and doesn't "goop up" the bottom of the bowl nearly as much as other similar blends.

Flavor--Basic. This is that standard smoky vanilla taste associated with many cavendishes. The taste can do any of three things (and which one happens often seems beyond the smoker's control): It can be very flat and bland (or occasionally bitter), It can be a bit too sweet, or it can be just right. Its a crap shoot. Keep in mind that "bad" for this blend isn't so much "bad" as it is "boring."

Room Note--Pretty standard. In my mind, people (including non-smokers) generally associate pipe smoke with 2 room notes...this basic vanilla or cherry topped tobaccos. Very non-offensive note.

Overall, this one gets 2 stars from me...its a GREAT recommendation for a new pipe smoker, but is pretty 'blah' once you've been around the block a few times.

I need to write a new review for this blend. As time has gone on, I find that this is continually in my cellar as my go-to aromatic when I feel like having an aromatic tobacco.

1-Q is a good quality blend. The leaf, the flavoring, and the burning properties of this tobacco are excellent. I also find that it is one of the most consistent blends on the market. The flavor tastes of burley tobaccos (like eating almonds in a cigar humidor), chocolate, licorice, vanilla, and the sweet cavendish notes. It is mild on the palate, but delicious.

This tobacco has the best aroma of any tobacco, bar none. The wife loves it. It burns well and very clean for an aromatic. I have noticed no gunk in my pipes. It can also be used to add a nice aroma to english blends without ruining the flavor. It is also mild on the tongue and produces no bite.

To me this is the standard by which I judge aromatics. It is a good, solid, quality tobacco. If you are looking for an aromatic, a mild all-day tobacco, or a blend to smoke around friends, you can't go wrong with 1Q. As an added bonus, it is one of the most widely available tobaccos. I have no reservations in recommending this blend.

As an aromatic smoker with a fondness for vanilla and good cavendish, I need to throw my two cents worth in here.

I am a soldier in Iraq, and just ordered another eight ounces of this. 1-Q, as many have noted here, is not a great tobacco blend. But it is a good tobacco blend, and has just a bit more of a nicotine kick. Given the circumstances here, I need a good bulk tobacco which is a step above the dime-store blends that I can smoke a few bowls of any time of the day or night and not worry about it.

1-Q burns well, smokes easilly, and tastes quite nice. I'm told it has a good room note as well. I'll keep it in my rotation when I get back home for a quick any time smoke. It is mild and inoffensive and, for a pipe smoker of over 20-some years, became my tobacco of choice for deployment.

A base of Golden Cavendish with a dash of Fire-Cured Black Cavendish provides this blend with a tasty and flavorful aroma. This is a good Anytime blend and can be equally enjoyed in any size pipe. Good slow-burning qualities.

What is wrong with the world today? Why is this one of the most widely sold blends on the planet? Ahh- the questions I have for the almighty! This crud is for the birds. Tasted like just another vanilla cased drug store blend at first and then gets nauseous. This is another blend my poor uninformed wife brought home from the local tobacco store when she was trying to be nice. They must of seen her as a poor defenseless victim to push this crap onto. They might as well tried to give her dope! It would have been less criminal. I fired it up to make her happy and waited for her to wander off so I could dipose of the rest in a biohazard bag, before going to retch in the commode! Please do yourself a favor and look somewhere else for your cheap stuff. I agree with Kerdy in that Captain Black Blue is a much better alternative.

I was skeptical about the hype behind this blend. I had smelled it before, and assumed it sold so well because it smelled good. I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of this tobacco. It’s delicious. This is now my go-to recommendation for first time pipe smokers. It’s readily available, inexpensive, and burns easily. This is one of the coolest burning aromatics I’ve tried. Little to no tongue bite, and only needed one relight (not counting the char light). This is my first review, but I felt like this tobacco deserved one more quality review. Highly recommend.

I like 1-Q because it has a great mouth feel and is a good change of pace after smoking English, VaPers, and Danish style aromatics for a while. I sense it as a sweet flavor with some vanilla flavor on retrohale. I can understand why it is as popular as it is. I always keep some and smoke it regularly.

This is my favorite vanilla aromatic. My least favorite vanilla is Sutliff Z92 Vanilla Custard because it is so heavily flavored.

Mouth feel of 1-Q is the best of any tobacco I've tried. It really is a pleasure and I wish more tobaccos could duplicate this quality.

Technique notes: My smoking technique is to focus only on smoking. No reading or work or other distractions. Just enjoying the smoke. Outdoors only. A few bowls per week of pipe smoking. Lightly charring the tobacco initially and with relights. Sipping. Occasional retrohale. Peterson pipe lighter with smallest practical flame. Sometimes a BIC EZ Reach lighter.

Am using a variant of the Frank method to pack a 2/3 full pipe without first putting loose tobacco in the bowl. I just take a wad of tobacco and press it into place Frank-style. Tobacco is stored in OXO POP container with size 60 Boveda 72% pack.

Savinelli 207 smooth is my favorite pipe and favorite pipe design.

Let me start by saying I'm a rare aromatics smoker. That said, I am giving this three stars based on my comparison to other aromatics I have tried. Not my usual smoke, but pretty good for what it is. The smell is terrific. If you asked a non-pipe smoker what pipe tobacco smelled like, this would be it. If you walked in a tobacco shop and told them you wanted to try the hobby, you would probably walk out with a basket pipe and a baggie of 1Q. And you would probably decide this pipe thing was ok. This is not complicated, you don't have to think about it or look for nuances. It taste like what you would expect from the smell. Smokes mild, can go out if you don't pay attention. Good for the newbie and a decent change of pace for the experienced pipe smoker. Decent value for the price as well

1Q is a simple no frills smoke. Simple without being boring. To me, it smells strongly of chocolate, though there is no taste of it. Taste is primarily roasted nuts, vanilla, cream and, maybe caramel or honey. There are some grassy tobacco notes from the virginias. A zip, a zap and a zapowwie from the fire cured cavendish. I have to assume there is burley in this on account of the roasted nut flavours. Burns well. Tastes great. Smells great. Perfect moisture. Comparatively inexpensive. It doesn't bite, hard. As I understand it, this is the blend your grandfather smoked. Well, I didn't know your grandfather, nor do I care what the old fart smoked, but, clearly, grandpa had good taste. Considering the quality, availability and cost point, it's 4 stars. Highly recommend.

I was really wondering to taste this tobacco. Fresh sample has nice aroma after pure vanilla. To be honest, I was very excited when I tried first bowl. Smoking was pleasant, smooth with vanilla taste almost whole duration of seeping. First bowl of this tobacco was awesome. My experience with this tobacco was less idealistic next time, but honestly, I now understand why is this aromatic U.S. best seller.

Nice creamy Cavendish blend with a real light vanilla flavoring. I get a little vanilla, cocoa, nuts, a tiny bit of wood, and smokeyness. The light addition of fire-cured adds just enough edge and complexity to make things interesting, and toward the end of a larger bowl I notice somewhat of a rich savory build-up as the flavors come together and the casings/toppings slowly dissipate. Overall A simple but enjoyable, mild smoke with a good room note. Comes a little moist, but is smokeable as-is. Doesn't bite. Little nicotine.

I can see why so many people swear by 1q. It's one of the few aromatics I can actually come back to without getting bored halfway through a bowl. It's also excellent when mixed with other tobaccos. I'd highly recommend trying it with an English. I'm serious just try it. I don't smoke 1q very often, maybe once a month. But when I do it's always surprised me, and keeps me indoors firmly planted on the couch.

Tin/bag note: caramel, toffee, vanilla, virginia, hay, very slight baking spice

Flavor: this is the first aromatic that tasted like I had hoped/expected from the tin note. This in my relatively inexperienced opinion is basically the perfect ratio of flavor from the topping and the flavors of the component tobaccos coming through

Strength: mild to medium it can burn a bit hot due to how smooth and tasty it is messing up your cadence.

Room note: not as good as I expected, walking out of the room and coming back in after about 10 minutes, a little sour in my opinion but not very strong.

Moisture level: perfect, smokes great right out of the bag, this may vary though so yours may run a little dry and require moisture added or run a little wet and require a small amount of drying time.

Overall: A great inexpensive blend that is aromatic without completely masking the flavors of the tobacco. I think everyone should at least give 1q a chance. Dense smoke, excellent flavor, well behaved, what more could you ask for except that flavor coming through to the very end of the bowl but I think that's almost impossible to achieve. And on top of all that it's always in stock

Upon opening the tin I was greeted by Vanilla, Caramel and very slight touch of chocolate. The tobacco seemed about perfect in moisture but having smoked Lane's Vanilla Black Cavendish for years I sat it on a paper towel for 50 minutes.

Filling the bowl it was a nice ribbon cut that seemed to burn evenly, a bit warm even sipping using the bellows breathing method and it burned down to a dark gray ask. More than average re-lights. The smoke was mild and bluish white with a wonderful aroma of marshmallows.

Upon lighting a rich vanilla and creamy caramel with a touch of grass and very light citrus met me and it was pleasant. The second draw saw the vanilla and caramel become very mild and a light, very light touch of honey appeared. The taste stayed very consistent until just after half a bowl and then a slight pepper taste appeared.

While smoking there was a sweet pleasant aftertaste and after finishing a sweet and slightly peppery aftertaste that was pleasant lingered for just under a half hour. I was pleasantly surprised this was not an overpowering aromatic but a mild, not in your face smoke that was enjoyable.

I like 1Q and found it to be a very pleasant smoke. However, this shows signs that if pushed it would bite and burn hot. But, I sipped along and had no problem with it at all. Unlike so many other aromatics this is not overpowering, nor really wet (although it left a bit of moisture in the bowl) and sticky or any of the others of some overdone aros. This is a pleasant, everyday smoke that will please those around you with a wonderful room note and a mellow smoke for those relaxing moments during the day or evening. Not complex but done well with a nice subtle taste that makes it pleasant. However, if looking for something a bit more complex or with more emphasis on tobacco taste this is definitely one to steer clear of for it will underwhelm one in those areas for it is a aromatic and a fine one. Definitely one to try out and I give it a 3.2 out of 4 stars.

Let me preface this review by saying that this was the first blend I had ever smoked and with nothing else to compare it to, these were my first impressions.

Being new to pipe smoking, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had read numerous reviews rating this tobacco as a great jumping off point to introduce technique and enjoy a mild blend. Mild this definitely is. It did not have a harsh taste initially and had an absolutely inviting sweet scent upon opening the bag. However, I had a terrible time keeping this lit long enough to fully enjoy it. I chalked most of my relights up to amateur mistakes and a learning curve, but this was downright frustrating. I had read that Virginias burn quickly and should be sipped slowing rather than puffing. Being that this blend is mostly Virginia tobacco I tried this method but for the life of me I could not keep the bowl going.

Additionally, after getting halfway through the bowl, I noticed that not only was I getting a hot bite, there was this lingering, acidic taste left in my mouth. This lingered for hours.

As I mentioned, I had nothing else to compare this to, but first impressions left me kind of... meh. In review the pros: extremely mild nicotine for beginners, pleasant smell while burning and in the packaging, extremely mild to non-existent flavor. Cons: Acidic, lingering aftertaste, burns hot, won't stay lit.

First of all, don't pay any attention to any negative or objectionable reviews about Lane's 1 Q. If you do, you'll be missing out on one of the finest flavored & enjoyable aromatics on Planet Earth. It does not bite & doesn't necessarily have to be sipped. The extra sweet taste will provide you with a delicious chocolaty caramel flavoring and vanilla & or something akin to marzipan... like being able to smoke a Milky Way candy bar.

At the halfway point, I noticed a chocolate flavoring more than the vanilla. Also, the tobacco itself does possess enough nicotine to satisfy a craving. The nicotine is just above the mild range. It is not really a totally wimpy blend when it comes to getting a supply of Vitamin N, especially when smoked in a larger bowl. It is not a goopy aromatic & on the plus side, provides a good burn rate. If not properly dried out it will produce extra condensation & I've found that drying it out to the proper moisture content will not diminish the flavor.

I'll also add that I'm not a total user of aromatic blends but can certainly enjoy a good one to the fullest for a change of pace and the room note of 1 Q provides an enticing aroma that even non-smokers will enjoy as well. However, Erik Stokkebye's 4th Generation Family Reserve will always be my favorite aromatic blend. 1 Q is an outstanding aromatic blend which is the reason it's number one in sales of this genre.

I bought a tin of this, rather than bulk, so my review is for the tinned version. Upon opening, I was greeted by a very strong vanilla and caramel aroma. Tobacco is a bit moist, and my first smoke was after drying for 45 minutes. It was a sloppy mess of goop after half a bowl. The next, and subsequent smokes have been after 1-3 days drying time. After an excercise in patience, one is greeted by a pleasant, tasty vanilla and caramel flavor with a pleasant aromatic smoking session. Not much, if any tobacco flavor comes through the casing and topping, but what flavor is retained is tasty and particularly matched to black coffee. Not something I would recommend to beginners or to anyone not wanting to or prepared to smoke a very sweet bowl of vanilla caramel with hints of alcohol, but still tasty for what it is. Even after a long dry time, it still retains a bit of moisture and goop in the Dottle. Sip, pack well, and above all, dry this out!

This one is just alright.. it has a bit of an "off" taste to me that I just can't put my finger on. It has a good flavor, but very little tobacco and the flavoring seems more artificial than say LL-7 or Stokkebye Nougat. I like it and would smoke it again, but wouldn't buy it over say LL-7.

Many times i dismiss the massive hype something may have, from books to movies, most generally people tend to have poor taste to equally poor criteria to fill the blanks. But in here, they don´t. This is historically accurate assertion.

I have paved the way through lots of aros and english mixtures just before entering this classy. And it is understandable why it is so liked by so many generations. Its mellow character, so typical from cavendish and the sweet note given by virginias make it the "philosophal stone" of aromatics, well, almost.

Taste is rather uncomplicated and no brainer, but it has a magic into it that is quite hard to define. Call it smoked marshmellows, a little of caramel and vanilla and by the mid half a rather whisky taste on the tongue. Taste also evolves, at first cavendish rules, then virginias bring the liquor note rounded by the sweet and very particular flavour that only 1-q has. So this is not a monochromatic aro, it is rather subtle, mild but satisfying, this intrinsical simplicity makes it special and unique, that is why this is probably the pivotal point of referent whenever we speak about aromatics.

I've been a pipe smoker on and off for 20 years or so. I started with the otc blends. And still smoke Captain black royal regularly. But have ventured out. I'm a huge fan of Boswell. And I've heard mixed reviews of 1q. Mostly good. And been told it's very similar to CBR. So I took the plunge and orderd a pound of 1q from pipes and cigars and I am very impressed. I'm absolutely in love with this stuff. I do detect some similarity to CBR, but much better. I'm not good at writing reviews but I highly recommended it. Very mild no bite at all and a great room note.

Got this one to fill an order and was a bit skeptical on getting a US brand. Something about the exotic of getting tobaccos from Europe just seemed more chic.

Opened up the tin and was blown away!

It was moist which is probably bad for a dry smoke, but I really like the bouncy feel of the tobacco and to me added to the fresh aroma I was hit with. It smoked as good as it smelled, like silky chocolate! Unlike other chocolate flavored tobaccos I've tried that were sickly over the top and therefore tasted fake, this one had a bunch of punch and was in no way mild, but somehow was not overbearing.

Smoked like a great candy you just can't stop eating. I have and will keep rebuying it.

Think of the relationship between a Big Mac to a steak. The steak has more nutrition, natural flavor and quality, but it is harder to eat and not very sociable. The Big Mac easily fits in the hand, is heavily sugared and salted and dosed in piquant sauce, and can be easily acquired at low cost.

This same difference applies to tobacco. Lane Limited 1-Q aromatic pipe tobacco serves a sort of tobacco "junk food" in that it is highly sweetened, smells and tastes of vanilla, and leaves behind a room note better than unnoticeable; it is outright pleasant. You can smoke it all day and your neighbors will not complain because it smells like vanilla-chicory potpourri. You will also not experience any level of nicotine that will stimulate your brain, possibly leading to complex thoughts that may disturb your otherwise carefully constructed web of illusions which convinces you that your life and your civilization are doing Just Fine.

On the other hand, 1-Q suffers because it is balanced toward the sweet flavoring which obscures any natural flavor of the tobacco, and as a result it misses the richness and intensity of less-processed tobacco. Its somewhat wet appearance leads to wondering what it has been soaked in to produce this mild smouldering effect, and while it burns cleanly down to white-grey ash, its taste staggers somewhat from overly sweet to a charred non-entity during the smoke.

Mixing this tobacco with richer blends can soften them a bit and camouflage the thick clouds of dark and powerful smoke they leave behind, but in my view, this is a sociable tobacco. Much like going to McDonald's and getting everyone a Big Mac will produce no complaints because it is inoffensive, this sugared tobacco will fit into any social occasion where the tobacco KGB still allow us to smoke. Women love its graceful scent and you would have to burn a heap of it to get any kind of nicotine overdose. At the same time, this may not be a satisfying blend for those who like a rugged or full-flavored smoke.

One reviewer noted that "...it's hard to argue with the best selling blend in the world". That's true but only for the herd of cows that can be unwaveringly driven over a cliff, as one simply follows another over the precipice. 1-Q has also been described as a Captain Black but with better tobaccos - if so I'm glad I never bought the Captain. No this blend is a Virginia/Cavendish with a real dollop of vanilla flavoring.

Dollop enough that a good drying is essential and even then not successful. And although the blend is certainly very mild, you will soon be made aware that Viriginia and flavoring bite is a possibility and you will have to really focus on s-l-o-w sipping, and even then...

Nice pouch note, nice room note, no complaints but from the smoker's perspective not much to talk about - I found 1-Q unidimensional and oddly "edgy" - a tobacco I had to fight with to keep lit. Two things dominate - the aromatics and that little Virginia bite. You are tempted to buy this tobacco as a "mild, all-day, gentle aromatic" based on numerous cattle reviews, but I'm afraid these are overstated and overly influenced more by the reviews than by the experience.

I'm not saying 1-Q is bad; it's just not all that pleasant; and the underlying tobacco is so remote as to be hard to find. There's some tobacco there, but we're just not sure where. Personally, I think this is a tobacco that is smoked based on herd reviews and their wive's approval for the room note, not for the smoke itself.

As a comparison, I dare you to fired up Lanes RLP-6, which will immediately show you the difference - still aromatic but very lightly so. Tobacco-forward, not behind, lovely nutty Burley effects and contribution to good burning. Burns beautifully with no real re-lights out of the pouch. RLP-6 is really the blend 1-Q could and should have been, but wasn't. As a result 1-Q is little more than a common aromatic drugstore pouch tobacco aimed at getting laid, albeit with probably better tobacco. But not much.

But don't believe me - or the herd reviews - buy an ounce of each: 1-Q and RLP-6 and compare them. I daresay you'll prefer the RLP-6 in every way.

Presentation is finely cut ribbon. Tin note is distinctly, deliciously vanilla. This blend benefits from some extended drying time and/or aging in a mason jar for about a year, after which it takes a match well and burns evenly and cleanly, and lacks the hot, fast burn of so many Cavendish aromatics. 

The flavor mirrors the tin note: soft, supple vanilla. I don't know if this is the best vanilla aromatic out there, but I can't imagine there's one too much better. To my palette, hardened as it is with VaPers, this blend is somewhat one-dimensional. But it's a delicious dimension, and when I find myself wanting a change of pace, or when I'm conscious of the room note - as with family visiting - it's among the aromatics I'll reach for. Don't expect complexity here. Expect a delicious vanilla aromatic with absolutely no tongue bite. 

For the genre, for what it is, absolutely a recommendation.

Quite simply the single worst tobacco I've ever smoked! Absolutely no flavor, no taste, whatsoever. As far as the room note goes, I didn't notice it at all ( I always smoke outside). I cannot believe people smoke this. Someone else said you might as well be smoking colored paper. Sadly, I had to put that statement to the test. I did. And he was right.

I started with this blend almost a year ago, and smoke it more regularly that any other. It takes no concentration, burns clean and cool, and has a delightful taste and room note, in my humble opinion. I smoke several others, mostly Va-Pers and Va flakes, and enjoy them all, but this one is, at this point, my go-to aromatic followed closely by McClelland's Fragrant Matured Cake (bulk 2000). Captain Black smokers, try this one and/or RLP-6. They are a better tobacco and cheaper too!

I purchased this blend as 'Wilshire' from the Tinder Box store in Atlanta. To be fair, I am a novice and this was one of the first blends I've tried. I'm still trying different blends and I haven't found a 'favorite' yet, but I would put this as my #2 choice of four blends I've tried so far. It's not overly flavored, the smell and room note is pleasant, but the smell seems to hang around in my pipe more than other blends. To me, it smokes a bit hotter than other blends I've tried, and if smoked too fast, it leaves me with tongue bite. Again, I am a novice, so it could just be my technique. I think I'd buy more of this blend in the long run, especially once I've gotten more experience in pipe smoking and can enjoy the subtle nuances of the blend.

For some reason I put my pipes down about 20 years ago. I couldn't tell you why now. However, I've recently picked them back up again. A coworker gave me about a half ounce of 1Q to get me started again. I like it. As aromatics go it's not a bad smoke. You do have to smoke it somewhat carefully so as not to overheat your pipe and it can be a little "gurgely" (that's not even a real word is it?). I recommend this tobacco as I would recommend a nice vanilla ice cream. I don't always eat butter brickle or almond praline, sometimes I like a simple, uncomplicated bowl of vanilla ice cream. In tobacco, this is the one. And yes, I would consider it to be a beginners blend. But I would not say that one should shun it and leave it behind.

For those trying a pipe for the first time, this would be a great starter. I have been smoking it for about one year now, and have found it lacking a bit in taste and flavor. I have been smoking some of Mc's 5100, Rattrays Hal O' the Wynd and some of Mc's 2010, along with Esoterica's Tillbury. So that may be the cause of why this has fallen from my favorite list. Trying to bring it back a bit I have mixed in some 5100 and surprisingly enough it seems to have given it the kick that it needed for me to use as a change of pace blend. But straight up it is a fine blend for those looking to start or are just looking for a change of pace. Keep the Smoking light lit !

1Q is a pleasant, light aromatic. The flavoring is present throughout a bowlful, but it is not overpowering. This is a well-balanced blend. Any moisture issue is easily resolved by letting the tobacco dry for several minutes before packing it into one's pipe. The room note makes this one a crowd-pleaser, as well. A great blend for the novice pipe smoker or experienced puffer looking for a mild alternative to heavier aromatics or a change of pace from Latakia-laced concoctions that, lately, seem to be in vogue amongst us Brothers of the Briar. (Guilty as charged.) Lastly, 1Q equals some of the pricier tinned blends that are available.

Well, I smoke several variants of this from Jon's in Clayton, Jezvan, and Nostalga Shop in Columbia, HarborMist, and it is the one I keep coming back to. It just burns well, smokes well, and doesn't make my home smell much for the worse. I enjoy the occasional English Blend etc, but No One will hang around to talk to me.

This is a nice mild smoke, and like I say, I keep gravitating back to it.

This is a standby of the american culture for a reason. It's a really good aromatic. Plain and simple, the ultimate good drugstore blend (if such thing exists). Sweet flavor, nice room note, burns hot and bites at the least over-puff. Wife loves the smell. What more can I say, 1-Q is definitely one of those blends everybody should keep a supply of, even if it's only an occasional smoke.

Often times this is the first pipe tobacco a tobacconist sells to a new pipe smoker. Fortunately, there are far better blends available. This one burns somewhat hot and produces a lot of steam, which in turn will burn the tongue.

This was one of the first tobaccos I tried when I started smoking and even then I didn't enjoy it much. It somehow managed to be relatively bland while at the same time perfumey and goopy. The bag of 1Q floated around until I finished off my BCA (same company MUCH better blend) and I eventually used it up. Needless to say, I didn't purchase anymore of it. I don't understand what people see in this blend, as there are much better tobaccos out there that are just as cheap and available.

The fact that this is the #1 selling tobacco in the U.S. is disturbing. So this is what the masses smoke? I too, like any beginner, started with heavily cased wet tobacco as well. I must have missed this one, thankfully. The taste does not live up to the pouch aroma, not to mention the bite it lays down on your tongue - without much taste to go with it. The room note is about all that is pleasing about this blend. Only half of this blend can be smoked due to the PG & flavor content - which makes it impossible to dry out. Believe me, I tried. For a beginner, I would just assume recommend Captain Black or virtually any drug store blend over 1Q. Lane's gold cavendish or HS-3 are better alternatives for the beginner or lover of aromatics.

I tried this when I was a relatively new pipe smoker and had only tried store brands up until then. My tobacconist suggested 1-Q. I was surprised to find that the smell is pretty much all there is to this blend. After lighting there was almost no taste and the rest of the way into the bowl there was a hint of flavor but I wasnt sure if it was left over from another tobacco. It was a little to hot for my tongue. I had to light more times than I care to mention. Many have said it is a good beginners tobacco, but I wouldnt even say that. I would smoke it if I had nothing else available, but do not plan to ever purchase it again. The one thing that makes this blend worth the money spent on it is the very low cost. It is also a very good tobacco to blend with something else to tone the other down a bit, but I can't imagine any other use for it.

This is the first thing I smoke every morning (I like my first smoke of the day to be mild) and have 2 Stanwells that are dedicated to this blend only. I can get this at 3 of my most frequented Tobacco shops all under different names as well as Tender box under Wilshire, and all 4 say it's their biggest seller by far! This is a great first Tobacco for the beginner in my opinion and also comes in handy for blending if your a Veteran. I haven't had some of the same problems/complaints as the other reviewers above, but I have noticed from time to time that one batch purchased here is a little different in some respects from another batch I purchased there. This leaves me to believe that either the blend isn't too consistent, or some Tobacconists may add their own touch at times. Either way I recommend this one if you want something mild and perhaps you should try a couple oz's at more than one location?

The major stepping stone from the drugstore blends to buying premium tobaccos. I've smoked plenty of this stuff over the years and it's not bad for what it is...a room pleaser. It's for the smoker who thinks a pipe tobacco should smell good for others and has an aroma that non-smokers just think of as what pipe tobacco should smell like. It is moist and is heavily cased but lights easily and I never have a problem keeping it lit until the end. I definately prefer it in a meerschaum over a briar because it smokes much sweeter and drier and really aids in the meer coloring process. I can honestly admit I always keep a few ounces on hand during the year for when I want to smoke in public or not have to think about what I'm smoking. It's also mild enough to start the day off with a cup of coffee and the two interract well. Inexpensive too. A pound at Lil Browns Smokeshop on the web is 13 USD.

Lane's 1Q must be one of the most widely distributed blends around. Of course, it is found under a myriad of other names. In my case, I purchased it at a Tinderbox, two years ago, under the name Wilshire. It is a mixture of fine cut pieces with a heavy Vanilla pouch aroma. I only smoked a few bowls, and then I put it away. The Vanilla makes for a fine room aroma. Unfortunately, that is all that I taste during the smoke. I can't taste any of the underlying tobaccos. Even my hands smell like Vanilla from handling the mixture. Still this is a very popular blend, and probably not too bad for a beginning pipester. One of my concerns is that I found this little plastic bag in a kitchen drawer where I placed it two years ago. I was sure it would be bone dry. Yet, it is as fresh and wet as when I first purchased it. In fact, it is still too moist too smoke. My regular blends would have turned to powder in just a month or two. There is a ton of preservative chemicals in the blend. I would not mind smoking a bowl once or twice a year, but I won't keep any around.

Full disclaimer: I really do not like aromatics, but, being a good pipe ambassador, I will reluctantly keep a few aromatics on hand for occasions where the expectation is that the pipe should smell good to those around me. Lane 1Q is one of those aromatics.

1Q does what it does and it does it very well. It is monochromatic in flavor profile - you get a very consistent and up front vanilla & caramel. I can always get a vanilla extract, almost alcohol flavor off of this blend when it is fresh out of the bag. Of those two flavors, vanilla is the driver and caramel is the passenger. The Virginias do come through, but in a general basic "this is tobacco" kind of way, not an "oh the wonderful Virginias!" kind of way. If that is your thing, you will absolutely love this blend. Nothing is overpowering about 1Q. If you really want to get the most out of 1Q, smoke it in a dedicated cobb pipe and it will give you all it can give in terms of flavor. Unfortunately, like all aromatics with a good dose of cavendish, your pipe is going to get a little wet and goopy. In fairness, the pipe will not be as wet and goopy as other aromatics, but enough to where you will want to smoke this in a dedicated aromatic pipe.

On the spectrum of aromatics, it is no wonder why this blend is one of the best selling of all time. This is not a low quality aromatic. New pipe smokers, who are chasing what they envisage the pipe to be, will be pleased by this blend. For the experienced pipe smoker, especially those who do not favor aromatics, it will just make you shrug your shoulders and say: 'meh, it's okay. Its not terrible.' And they are right - it is not terrible by any means. Do I ever want to reach for Lane 1Q? No. But if I'm in a situation where I feel compelled to throw an aromatic in the bowl to keep happy company, 1Q would be an option. Personally I would always reach for GL Pease's Virginia Cream, as I feel that the Virginias with their tangy fruitiness are much more prevalent and the cavendish is far more subdued, but 1Q would be an option for me.

Judged against other aromatics - 4 stars. Judged in general as a tobacco - 2.5 stars

For this review, I'll give it 4 stars for what it is. But I still will only smoke it when I feel compelled by external circumstances.

I’ve tried this many times. Production seems consistent, but the storage and handling of end item distributors is not.

A mild, approachable tobacco. Obvious vanilla forward toppings. Easy to smoke, but may require drying time (depends on how fresh the stock you purchased is).

One of the top selling aromatics for a reason. Smells good, tastes good, and it is readily available. If you like aromatics, this is the baseline blend you need to try. Try to purchase this from a reputable source. There is a lot of old bulk stock floating around, age doesn’t improve this blend.

So, we can discuss the wonderment of our impossible to find unicorn tobacco that's been out of production for years and describe it with a string of clichés and buzz words (which sound ridiculous); or trust the masses. Lane 1-Q is the number one tobacco in the world, because it's that good according to most pipe enthusiast. Let's cut to the chase - it's an aromatic and not your English blend so not fair to compare them! Here's the rub - it smokes dry, it is mild yet has abundant flavor, it's one of the very best room notes that non-pipe smokers like, there isn't any tongue bite unless your pipe smoking era began yesterday and from a $5.00 basket pipe. If you are truly a pipe smoker and not just another pipe collector trying to look like an ad in a men's magazine - this tobacco won't disappoint! Its much like McDonalds - they simply fill a market demand and that's it! They aren't a fine dining establishment and therefore you don't expect one. Lane 1Q is a wonderful go to smoke. Buy some and enjoy it, even if you don't tell others, you like it!

Similar Blends: It not Captain Black and stop saying so! That is both cliché and inaccurate. While there are a few aromatics which have similar properties; they taste like what they are, and Lane 1-Q taste like Lane 1-Q. You wouldn't go to McDonalds and say it taste like Burger King, would you?!.

In most cases, the most widely sold product in a market is usually pretty mediocre. Bud Lite tastes like alcoholic water, Jose Cuervo gives me the worst hangover possible, etc. so I was hoping that Lane 1-Q would break the pattern in the pipe scene. Sadly, I was mistaken.

Upon lighting and drawing I expected a full-bodied black cavendish flavor backed up by heavy sugary and vanilla topping. Yet, there was nothing at all. I smoked it for some time hoping that it simply had to heat up, or that I had some residue from a previous blend covering it up, but all that emerged was a slight hint of mild virginia, with some residual sweetness. As is the case with all black cavendish blends, the room note is excellent and inviting, but there's simply no flavor to back it up in this case.

Lane 1-Q is in the same genre as Captain Black, which, while divisive, is a pretty typical aromatic with plenty of flavor. I was told by several reviewers that 1-Q was, in fact, a premium version of Captain Black -- boy, were they ever wrong. 1-Q is like the incorporeal platonic form of Captain Black. It's like a ghost, I can't tell if there's anything in the pipe. I've tried smoking it in different ways -- faster, slower, puffing, sipping, didn't matter, no flavor. All I can think of trying next is to stick it in my non-filtered pipe.

My sentimental favorite pipe tobacco. While it wasn’t my first blend, nor the best I’ve ever had, in my early piping days it was the first blend where I finally “got it” and managed to genuinely taste something other than hot air. It’s a mild blend, nice clean vanilla flavor with a touch of actual tobacco taste. No tongue bite, easy to pack and light, and stays lit reasonably well. Room and bag note is quintessential aromatic pipe tobacco. Very economical every day blend. I don’t smoke it as often as I used to, but I’ve always got some in a jar.

They said this blend was perfect for beginners and it truly is... really for any level of pipe smoker. It is so light, airy, flavorful and sweet but not too sweet. Definitely balanced and well blended. If you are a beginner or haven't tried this blend, it is absolutely worth the time. I am buying a shit ton of this!!

Very pleasant and easily smoked cavendish with mild aromatic scents. I've smoked this under the name of 'Ducat' for some 20 years and the only one who complains is my wife... who hates all smoke. Everyone else who smells it says it reminds them of their beloved Grandfather! Love the way it smokes and easily burns.

A classic and for good reason. The only aromatic I smoke on a regular basis, Lane 1-Q is sweet, burns cool and is perfect for smoking inside with its heavenly room note. Lacks the punch of my preferred English and Va/Per blends but works great as far as aros go.

I'm a new pipe smoker, so I was quite excited to acquire some highly rated 1-Q. Finally gave it a try on a nice February walk in Minnesota (USA). I was certainly not disappointed. Vanilla flavoring was mild yet noticeable, even to my inexperienced palate. This is an excellent smoke and you won't regret giving it a try.

Wow this is a glorified version of Captain black Royal.This blend is additive and preservative free the tobacconist said.The blend smells like Vanilla the room note smells like vanilla and it tastes like vanilla all in a very good way.The tobacconist said that it would have a shorter shelf life than the Captain Black Royal unless I bought a air tight tobacco jar.I enjoyed this as another one of the many different blends in my collection.

Lane’s 1Q is light, and lightly sweet. It’s not goopy and can be smoked straight away. Packs easily, burns well, and won’t bite. It imparts notes of creamy vanilla, and a slight hint of honey and hay from the Virginias. A nice change of pace for the non aro smoker, and a must for the aromatic enthusiast. Very pleasant. Recommended.

Lane 1-Q is sweet and has a nice room note, but taste is everything which it lacks. Prince Albert tastes much better and has a similar room note.

I used to buy a lot of aromatics way back in my college days. Never really paid attention to what I bought before, just whatever smelled good in the jar at Tinder Box, so I am sure that I have had this one before. But this was the first time that I bought 1-Q knowing what I was getting and it immediately transported me back to sitting on my postage-stamped-sized college apartment porch. Mild flavored but still toasty and creamy. Room note is great. Smells like "pipe tobacco". The flavoring is not overpowering. I think that it's very well balanced tobacco. There's enough going on to keep it interesting.

2022-07-31 update: I am revising this down to 2 stars only because I think that LL-7 is everything that 1-Q wants to be. I have some 30-month-old 1-Q, and I don't know if this just doesn't age well or if I am just expecting more flavor now. When I first started smoking a pipe, 1-Q used to be one of my favorite blends. But now, I had a hard time getting any flavor out of this blend whatsoever.

2023-02-09: Back up to 3 stars. This is a solid blend, and there's a reason why it's one of the most popular tobacco blends on the market. It is not meant to age, so smoke it when you get it.

I smoked three consecutive bowls in one evening, no tongue bite, no nicotine hit. My friends who were cigarette smokers said the room note was sensational. This was during the coffee, bourbon (Bucks 7 year old) and 78 rpm gramaphone stage of the evening, playing french chansons like J‘attendrais and La Mer....

Thankfully the tin art in America is still preserved (God bless 🇺🇸) , most attractive and elegant in this case. Opening the tin the sweet chocolate note hits you, nicely tobacco but a short 15 min dry is all thats needed, packs, lights and smokes without difficulty. The sweetness is delightful, not overly done, chocolate and caramel kisses from the topping and cavendish tobacco arrived and went whilst drinking coffee and bourbon all the way to the end of the bowl. A classic that belongs in every aromatic collection 😊

If you aren’t an aro fan, this tobacco is unoffensive enough to fit the bill when you need a change of pace. Lightly cased, well balanced vanilla aromatic tobacco that makes for a great blending tobacco or everyday smoke.

It’s not the best thing ever, nor the worst, it is wonderfully mediocre and it does that so very well. It doesn’t aspire to be great, but to be the best “good” tobacco out there!

I love this tobacco! The room note is awesome, Smokes perfectly and actually gets better the further down the bowl you get! It's got a nice vanilla top note but there are other subtler notes like hay, figs, and grape jelly. This one is in my regular rotation.

Truth being said this is No. 1 (uno/one/eintz/un) in the bulk tobacco sales at smokingpipes. For a good reason: It is not bad, or the other way to put it it is better than most others. Once you went through the exquisite rubber tire smell, incence like, bottled perfume of other balkan/english blends, you get tired of the empty positive reviews and need something that you can enjoy in the pretious time you have dedicated to this hobby. This is one of the blends most trust with their briars and time. You shouls try it too.

First of all, don't pay any attention to any negative or objectionable reviews about Lane's 1 Q. If you do, you'll be missing out on one of the finest flavored & enjoyable aromatics on Planet Earth. It does not bite & doesn't necessarily have to be sipped. The extra sweet taste will provide you with a delicious chocolaty caramel flavoring and vanilla & or something akin to marzipan... like being able to smoke a Milky Way candy bar.

At the halfway point, I noticed a chocolate flavoring more than the vanilla. Also, the tobacco itself does possess enough nicotine to satisfy a craving. The nicotine is just above the mild range. It is not really a totally wimpy blend when it comes to getting a supply of Vitamin N, especially when smoked in a larger bowl. It is not a goopy aromatic & on the plus side, provides a good burn rate. If not properly dried out it will produce extra condensation & I've found that drying it out to the proper moisture content will not diminish the flavor.

I'll also add that I'm not a total user of aromatic blends but can certainly enjoy a good one to the fullest for a change of pace and the room note of 1 Q provides an enticing aroma that even non-smokers will enjoy as well. However, Erik Stokkebye's 4th Generation Family Reserve will always be my favorite aromatic blend. 1 Q is an outstanding aromatic blend which is the reason it's number one in sales of this genre.

This was the first pipe tobacco I tried and almost the last. I wanted to try pipes as a nice and cheaper alternative to a cigar so was recommended this(as a lot of new smokers are) and picked up some and a cheap briar. This was not what I was expecting from pipe tobacco. The smell was good but I soon learned that no matter how I packed and hit the pipe it would give me tongue bite everytime and the tobacco did not taste natural. I also tried drying it out overnight and as others have stated this stuff does not dry out mostly due to chemicals. After a little research I learned about the different pipe tobaccos and what I ended up trying next was sone straight Va(bright CR flake) out of a cob and bam...thats the taste I was looking for in a pipe. In summary I think this is a very cheap and artificial tasting tobacco that I would be afraid to try again. I am up for trying other aros but not this one again!

Not sure what I can add that hasn't been said. This is a fine blend that is frequently compared to Butternut Burley, Boswell's' Best and many others. I found this to be superior to all of those that are compared. The original is the best. The Virginia is not over sampled but provides a nice complement to the Cavendish. The vanilla casing provides a pleasant room note and taste that is consistent to the bottom of the bowl. A mild all-day smoke and a heavy hitter in my rotation.

So I just recently started smoking a pipe and let me say, I have no idea what I'm doing. I started with dunhill early morning pipe and that was a bit strong. While I don't mind it very much I really appreciate how mild and flavorfull the limited 1 Q is. Great for smoking around people and for the times when you don't feel like a stronger blend.

Excellent tobacco, this is the first pipe tobacco I smoked as a new pipe smoker. I could not have picked a better variety. You can smoke this like a freight train and not get tongue bite. This is a great tobacco for beginning pipe smokers. Has a wonderful room note. This is one that I can smoke all day. The tin version is a lot better than the bulk version.

Inoffensively bland... Am I really smoking?

I started pipe smoking 5 weeks ago. This was one of the three blends I walked out of my local tobacconist's with. I smoked 10 bowls of it before writing a review, as I wanted to give it a fair shake. Honestly, this isn't for me. I don't see what the fuss is about it. I understand it is a nice, mild introduction into pipe smoking, but I don't see myself buying this much (if ever). The bag note is WONDERFUL, and the room note is very pleasant, but I just don't taste much when I'm smoking it. There's a hint of (pleasant) sourness about halfway through the bowl for me, which adds to the flavors a bit, but it's not enough. I feel like I'm only pretending to smoke my pipe when I've got 1Q burning. Of the 13 tobaccos I've tried so far, there are none that I've had so hard a time keeping lit as this one - I even tried drying it for 6-8 hours, but that didn't seem to make much difference. Also, it never fails that the bottom 1/3 of the bowl just ends up as charred dottle that is nigh unsmokable, so it seems that I end up discarding more dottle when smoking 1Q than with other blends I've smoked.

The mild taste might be good for someone coming over from vaping, but the frustration of trying to keep this stuff lit detracts from being able to recommend this as being a good "beginners" tobacco. I give this two stars as it isn't really BAD - it just isn't that GOOD to me either.

I am an occasional aromatic smoker, I don't know why. I like the ones I like as much as any other blend. I think I just tend to tire of them quickly and find little variation between even the ones I like. They all taste vaguely similar even when flavored differently. But when I like them, I still like them. I have heard this compared to Capt. Black, which it may be but it is certainly drier than any pouched CB I have ever come across. The tin note is very pleasant, it is the smell that drew me to the pipe as a kid. It is sweet with the "tobacco smell" in the background. It smell like "pipe tobacco" : the combination of Vanilla and Caramel, and I get a hint of cherry (maybe I am crazy) mixed with the cavendish is a heavenly experience. As the name of the category suggest this tobacco is at its best in the nose. From the pouch to the pipe this stuff smells great and conjures up all things pipe related: fisherman at the wharf, Sea Captain, those memories from childhood of family friends and relatives smoking a pipe after dinner. 1 Q aromas are that of the pipe. The flavor is mild, light and relights is where I most taste the underlying tobacco, The Cavendish (likely a Burley) is sweet with some woodiness to it. The vanilla flavoring is sweet but not overpowering and it leaves a pleasant non chemical aftertaste (another departure from CB and other pouch blends). Comes pretty dry and can be smoked out of the tin/pouch, however I always give aromatics at least 20 minutes to dry to be safe (not a fan of tongue bite). Smokes clean and no mess in the bowl. Very nice simple smoke and a great one when other folks are around. We need to give those around us something to remember the pipe by and for most the stank of a lat bomb isn't what draws 'em in. As I said I prefer English and VaPer blends (well I said I wasn't an aromatics guy, really) but this is the smell that drew me to the pipe. We owe a smoke like this to others around us, and it is a nice change of pace every now and then.

Lane Limited 1Q is reported to be the number one selling blend...period. It’s sold by most B&M outfits under one name or another. I first bought it years ago out of the long gone Dunhill store in downtown San Francisco as Dunhill A21000. It is still sold as that blend. They are certainly the same thing. And if you like aromatic blends, any way you slice it it’s good stuff. Truly delicious Vanilla Caramel Tobacco flavor and aroma. Given a spoon I would eat it from the bag it smells so dang good. Cool with no bite. Easy smoking. Low nicotine level. Crowd pleasing. Room friendly. Easy and pleasy, as they say. Yeah, it’s a little wet in the bowl, so pack some pipe cleaners. Lots of good reviews here are better judged and written than this one...JimInks plus Pipestud, Steel Cowboy & strongirish all do a solid and well informed, experienced review in my opinion. Check those out. Me? Well, I like good tobacco...aromatics, Burley blends, VaPers, etc., etc., etc. and if anyone asked me what I’d recommend in this genre...I’d likely tell ‘em to give this stuff a try. Like the perfect date on a Friday night...she’s pretty, she’s friendly, she has no pretenses, she’s eager to please...and she just smells SO good! That gets her a five star rating in my book.

Happy New Year fellow pipers and pipettes!!! 1Q, the most sold weed in the USA. I puffed on this buy the pounds years ago and was never disappointed. Now days it english, balken, and higher end areos. Recently, my sweet tooth became abcessed and had to have a fix. 1Q to the rescue!! Just as I remembered it, the aroma, the flavor, in a changing world, still consistant as it always was. I dont puff to diagnose each strand of tobacco in the mix, frankly I dont care if its Virginia or Virginia backed ham, I smoke for the pure pleasure of it. 1Q is one of the blends that never disapoints and the rooms vapor trail is nothing short of amazing. The vanilla/caramel topping is sublime. I have recently tried adding 1Q to a couple blends. First is Balken Supreme, which I order by the pound. In a mood for discovery, I took a handfull of Balken Supreme and added about 20% 1Q. WOW what a nice mixture! All the qualitys of a balken with a nice sweet tone. Wife adores the aroma finally and I can puff away at the pc, rather than being outside in -5 degree weather. Secondly, as many have noted here is that 1Q can be a tad rough. I mixed it 75- 25 with... umm Prince Albert. My lord, this now has become my all day pipe fuel. The Pa removes any trace of harshness and vastly improves the burning qualitys without sacrificing any of the smellum good. Get yourself a batch of 1Q and have some fun with it. Great on its own and a wonderful mixer as I discovered!!! Remember, the best pipe tobacco on the planet, is the one you like best!!! P.S. Stevie B, wish we could compare notes, call me LOL!!!

This blend really hits my subjective aromatic sweet-spot and I'd rate it one of the best if not the best I've smoked. It was quite a surprise when I lit the first bowl because I've certainly smoked this blend before sold under different names for various brands. The tin note has a hint of cocoa. The mix is moist because it is heavily cased but not goopy. The tabacky smokes smooth and sweet, with for me, the hint of cocoa and vanilla, maybe caramel. This is a go-to aromatic for me. Satisfies my sweat tooth without over doing it or being too light. Just right. I'm always reluctant to rate a hyped up blend from a big house this highly but the mix deserves it and Lane knows what it's doing with this blend. Excellent. This is my 99th review! Also, English/latakia blends are my favorite but I love my aromatics in the evening! Bought 11/2015, Opened 08/2017, Finished 01/2018. Blizzard in Boston as I type!

Downright amazing stuff.

Another hobby I enjoy is fragrance collecting. Funny, one of the top niche expensive blends there is entitled Tobacco Vanille. It's a superstar men's cologne fragrance and after two bowls of this I realized I was smelling something so very similar, but better...

It took a minute of smoking this for me to get the connection. Now, I understand the popularity. This isn't just some old concoction. This is downright a near perfect blending of two great aromas that complement each other exceedingly. So exceedingly, fragrances that are also super popular are built upon the ingredients.

The more I smoke it the more I'm tempted to put all my others down. I don't suppose that should happen as tobacco in and of itself is great in all its various compositions, but dang if Vanilla and a touch of caramel don't create something that's exquisitely better than the sum of its parts. Just ordered 8 ounces and this will see many a puff.

Echoing the sentiments of others, I finally put away all the fancy experimenting, and went for the long-time market fave, and now it's my fave too. I've been looking fruitlessly for that Carmel flavoring, and here it was all the time...not overwhelming, but with that nutty overtone, it's the best thing I've found since Edgeworth Gold disappeared from the market years ago. Smooth, just the right moisture, zero bite. The taste is mild, so if you're looking for strong tobacco taste, this will probably not suit you. But, for anyone just looking for a pleasant non-offensive flavor that will get rave reviews from those around you, this just might be the one. For me, it's just what I've been looking for, and I can put all the little one-ounce samples away for some occasional use at other time. This will become my go-to, and with about a 25% mix of BCA, I'm heaven bound. Thanks, Lane!!

This stuff is good. The room note is pleasant and sweet, but not wonderful. It does tend to smoke hot, and you have to be a conscious pipe smoker with this one. That being said, even when being cautious, tongue bite is likely.

Lane 1Q's saving grace is the taste. The taste is not overpowering, but it's always present. The taste never goes flat, and it's always a reward to have it in my pipe. It's sweet with just a hint of sour in there. I might describe it as mango, but probably won't because that would be inaccurate.

This is without a doubt one to try at any price range, but at cheap bulk prices, it's almost shameful to avoid it.

Being a newbie to pipes I'm very grateful for this excellent blend. Smooth, luxurious and no bite. Especially if you're smoking a cob. I notice of lot pipers squawk about how it goes out, doesn't burn properly etc. Well in the last month I've learned the pipe has to be packed correctly and effectively. The bowl has to be tamped regularly. I even gently mix up the ash on top and chuck it off. Burns way better. I can smoke most tobaccos for a full pipe load with no re-lights. This blend is highly recommended for the newbees and the old-timers (like me) who just want a nice "riverboat cruise at sunset" type tobacco, and none of this rootin', tootin' "ride 'em cowboy!!!" kind of stuff.

Highly recommended.

I'm generally not a fan at all of aromatics, most I've tried just taste like hot air. However, Lane 1-Q is something different. When I am in the mood for a relaxing, smooth, mild and sweet smoke that I don't have to think about, this is it. Get good flavor from a retrohale. Not extremely wet, stays lit well and only gives me tongue bite when I'm puffing much too fast. Smells wonderful, perhaps a vanilla topping? Definitely worth a try for anyone that wants something mild and sweet.

All time bulk leader, because it is a solid light smoke. Tobaccos are of good cut and quality, flavor is good and not overwhelming, and most everyone around likes the smell. This blend loads, lights and burns consistently from top to bottom with little or no gunk in the bowl. While I am more drawn to stronger selections, I always have a supply of this one on hand.

Great Aromatic. There is something satisfying about Lane 1q. I have probably had it by a dozen other names and failed to realize it until recently.

I put down the pipe and smoked only a few bowls, on special occasions, over the past couple of years. Since my only opportunities to smoke have been inside or in public, I found myself often packing aromatic blends instead of the English and Virginia blends I often smoked when I enjoyed four to five bowls a day. I still gravitate toward lighter blends after my two year hiatus.

Lane 1Q is definitely a lighter blend. One of the blends you could smoke and almost forget. The smell is fantastic and when exhaled through the nose it is easy to pick up the vanilla topping. This topping is also evident in the taste, but like most aromatics its aroma is more intense than its flavor. Although vanilla dominates the flavor you will also taste the lightly sweet cavendish under the topping.

I have never had too terribly wet 1q, it has only bit me when I tempted it, and it burns a lot cleaner than a lot of other aromatic blends. It will probably ghost your pipe. My problem, however, has been trying to smoke this in pipes previously dedicated to english blends. Its hard to get much flavor through latakia ghosts, so unless you plan on smoking Virginia flakes or the like after 1q, I would not worry too much about ghosting. The blend is very light.

To me and probably thousands of other smokers, this is the standard aromatic. Its what you think of when you think of aromatic tobacco. There are better blends and there are worse blends but 1q's light vanilla flavor satisfies and is readily available under probably thousands of names at local tobacco shops.

This is a no nonsense blend and is highly recommended to new smokers who want to try an aromatic and recommended to experienced smokers who enjoy aromatics regularly or on occasion. As for my experience this is probably the best aromatic that I've had. It took a char and light very well. Held it's flavor throughout the bowl (I picked up on the subtle sweetness of caramel and vanilla). The room note was very pleasant and my wife really enjoyed the aroma as well. It also burned cleanly leaving a very small amount of moisture in the bottom of the bowl (it was a pretty humid morning) but no goop. This is a great aromatic.

This is the first Lane bulk tobacco I ever purchased. I never read the reviews, just figured it was slightly better than average. I wasn't expecting much, but some tiny bit of flavor shouldn't be considered "much". This blend smells nice in the bag, but it tastes like nothing except hot air. As other reviewers have mentioned, it smokes wet even when left to dry for a few days. It has been compared to Capt. Black, and I assume it must be one of the lighter blends. CB regular, dark, copper, even cherry, have better flavor and better smoking characteristics than this. Sadly, this is a waste, and waste goes into the garbage. Let's see if the other Lane blends I got in a sampler fair better. Absolutely not recommended.

I bought this due to all the hype, and I am a fan of aromatics. I can't say I am disappointed. There is a nice caramel and honey sweetness and a tang I can't really identify. Just about every brick and mortar on the planet that sells bulk tobacco has it listed on sale but under a different name, I suggest getting a sample bowl from the bar or just buying a small bag for a few bucks. In San Jose my Local tobacconist (Mission Pipes) sells this under the name "Shag". If you like sweet aromatics that are fairly mild, then give this one a go. I don't think you will be disappointed, I wasn't. I suppose it being one of the most popular tobaccos of all time is at least one leg to stand on for an argument for this great tasting tobacco.

This is a great aromatic. Tin note reminds me slightly of vanilla birthday cake with DH frosting. There is a reason so many shops re-label this with a different name. It is an excellent aromatic that will please the smoker and those around him. Despite the moisture content, this lights and smokes very well. Flavors of vanilla, Danishes, birthday cake and toffee are noticed. No tongue bite if sipped properly. This is a great blend for a beginner to start with, due to availability and price point. And as others have mentioned, it is also a great relief blend for those smoking heavy English mixtures.

I'm new to pipes and this is one that a friend recommended. There isn't much that I can say that hasn't been said by other reviewers. I've made several observations about the tobacco for which I had no context, but now make much more sense.

I've struggled with keeping my pipe lit and thought that it was a result of poor skill and/or lacking experience. After becoming more educated on the topic of tamping, that phenomenon has improved, but not disappeared. While I can now handily get through 3/4 of a bowl without it snuffing out, the smoke takes on the muggy quality of being overly moist. Predictably, I can dump the bowl and find an appreciable sheen of moisture that is somewhat off putting.

When I first handled it, I found it to be noticeably stickier than other Tinder Box blends I've tried. However, with no context I simply found this curious. Drying may be recommended, but again, I know so little about this I wouldn't have thought to try it for effect.

Overall, it's still a pleasant smoke that is mild and well received by people around me. The flavor is pleasant and mild, there's minimal bite, and even my wife says it left me smelling nice. I don't see a need to kick this to the curb, but I do have a lot to learn.

This is a mild nicely rounded aromatic that won't bite your tongue, leave goop in your pipe or offend just about anyone. Kind of like comfort food for the pipe. I smoke cobs exclusively and thought i would try some of the "most sold tobacco in the world" as my introduction into aromatics. Buyer beware, this IS NOT Captain Black. The VAs are high quality and the flavouring is lightly vanilla and something else that i don't recognize. Someone posted it was caramel. If you want caramel, try Autumn Evening by C&D. When first introduced it was really good with just a whisper of maple, then Craig changed the recipe and introduced a caramel component and a whiskey component that completely ruined the mixture. Anyway, the real deal, Lane's 1Q, if loosely packed and puffed slowly will reward the smoker with a nice, comforting smoke.

I don’t have anything new to add to the legion of fine reviews of Lane’s extraordinarily popular 1-Q.

It has many good qualities—price, ubiquity, ease of smoking, ability to blend well with other tobaccos, a truly pleasant set of chocolate and vanilla flavors with occasional hints of dried fruit, and an aroma that seems to find favor even among non-smokers.

And it has some less desirable qualities—lack of nicotine strength, too much humectant. It sometimes seems that “goopy,” the favorite accusation leveled at aromatics by people who don’t smoke them, was invented for this tobacco.

I’ve been smoking more aromatics since the weather in the desert turned stiflingly hot, and the star of this aromatic parade is 1-Q. It’s a Twinkie of a tobacco, a factory tobacco that tastes particularly good to me in American factory pipes—filtered pipes in particular. Not fancy, but very pleasant in the right context.

This is a good blend. I give it between 3-4 stars but am going to give 4 just because so many folks love to hate this stuff. They probably turn around and give 1792 flake a good rating (blech).

I mix it with about 1/3 granulated 5 brothers to give it some nicotine. It's a good blend, but there are better aros out there. Mix it with My Mixture 965 or GLP Odyssey for a real treat. It will give strong English blends a nice room note without changing the flavor too much.

I started out smoking decades ago with mild aromatic tobacco, and every so often found Capt. Black in my rotation. After discovering better VaBur blends--and then Balkan mixes--I left such aromatic blends behind. They simply did not satisfy me and left me wanting another bowl of something else almost immediately.

I had the opportunity to sample 1-Q along with a number of other aromatics as part of a private box pass. Giving all blends due justice, I moved past my initial olfactory prejudice and lit up. This tobacco has no pretensions. It is not a multilayered, complex experience filled with notes of rainbow dust, old leather trunks, or fairy dew.

The vanilla, cavendish, and virginia come through just fine. There is a little bit of strength that is not a bite, but makes for those of us that inhale every so often satisfied with the throat feel. It does not become overpowering--and the room note is like a pleasant incense that does not offend others.

It does need a bit of drying time, and if one does not pack their pipe heavy and try to suck the bottom out of the bowl is not a wet or gurgly smoke. Burns well throughout the bowl. Can't contribute to the conversation about the very bottom of the bowl--as I smoke no tobacco that far down.

There are a couple characteristics that are mindful of Capt. Black--but honestly are shared by all medium topped aromatics. Those that directly compare this to one of the Black blends either are simply parroting what they have read in another review (this happens more than we would like to see), or likely can't tell the difference between a lot of tobaccos.

In summary, a nice aromatic to switch off from other families of blends. Not heavy on nicotine, but satisfying just the same. Great room note, and a pleasant way to spend some time with a simple, old school aromatic bowl. Can be blended lightly with a Burley base such as Prince Albert to add a bit more dimension and nicotine, without taking away the overall character of the blend.

What is there to say about an Icon? It is an all day Virginia and Cavendish with a unique aroma(Vanilla/chocolate) at least to my buds.Very low nicotine and truly bite free. If you are looking for lady N then keep moving on.That said you can always use it as a sweetener in any personal mixture.I mix it with C&D Old Joe krantz to get the nic but this is only an example. You can also smoke this straight when you don't want to think about depth or complexity. What can you say about an Icon?

This is a very nice smoke at a bargain price. The quality is far better than the price might indicate. Often compared with Captain Black Royal, 1Q seems to have slightly more depth of flavor and better defined tobacco tastes and smells. A great tobacco for everyday and all day smoking - mild to medium, no tongue bite, good mix of flavors and smells. Compared to other everyday ordinary tobaccos, this is a top-notch bargain. I can understand why this is the best selling pipe tobacco in America.

Really damn good blend. This is the most popular bulk blend in America, and there is a reason. This is a far less sludgy, higher-end Captain Black white (Lane makes both). Because it is not sold in pouches, 1-Q does not need the high humectant load that goes into CBW. Lovely pouch note, lovely room note. If you want to impress a new girlfriend, you could do worse than 1-Q. May need a little drying time before packing, but nothing like CBW.

If this had more tobacco taste it would be a 4. But while very pleasant and something you can smoke anytime, after a few bowls I start to need some real tobacco taste. But it's a nice change for the occasion when I want an aromatic that isn't too heavily perfumed, and this is vanilla basically done right. It is not the world's best aromatic but a decent buy for the price.

I think 1-Q deserves better than the overall 2.7 rating it has at this point; I consider it about 3 stars. Not much else to say, in light of so many reviews, but I recommend it heartily. It is incredibly popular for many years now, and there is a reason. Great for pipe newbs, though huge numbers of old hands love it, too.

After seeing many recommendations on 1Q I had to give it a try. Got to say, I see why it gets so many positive reviews. Though I am generally not an aromatic enthusiast, I have to say I have really enjoyed this one. It's smooth, consistent every time for me, and it's a refreshing change from time to time from my english and dominant latakia favs. If your new to pipe tobacco this is a great start. If your in the mood for a smooth sweeter smoke, this is a good ticket as well. If you enjoy the complexities of various tobacco combos, this probaby isn't going to be your thing. Room note is enjoyable to all - always positive reviews if you want to enjoy a good smoke around company or the family. One of my favorite aromatics - just jarred a pound to keep some around for a bit.

I am not a huge aromatics fan. While I don't dislike them as a rule I usually go for something with a little more oomph to it. Out of the aromatics that I have tried this has to be one of the best. Out of the bag it's just a mild vanilla smell with very little else to it. Very similar to Captain Black, only a little less overpowering. That worried me a little, because CB can taste like a lot of hot nothing at times.

The main difference between CB and this is that the very pleasant vanilla actually carries through quite well into the smoke. CB tastes only of vanilla (cheap vanilla), whereas this has a little more Virginia that manages to make it through. The flavor also stays the same from start to finish, never letting off the quite pleasant flavor and staying cool no matter how much you puff. No vitamin-N that I could detect, and could definitely smoke this all day. This is also one of the few tobaccos I quite enjoy that when I smoke it around people they predictably say "Wow! That smells amazing!"

For aromatic smokers I would totally recommend this blend, and for non-aromatic smoker I would still suggest they try it. It's the #1 selling pipe tobacco for a reason.

(I am a newer and irregular pipe smoker. My reviews are subject to my preferences and tastes and pipe smoking habits) Comes in a plastic bag that smells of sweet vanilla, even through the plastic, basically overpowering the whole shipping box it arrived in. Golden, brown and black ribbons. Moisture level is good, could use some drying time, but I do not dry it before smoking. It lights easy and smokes just the same. Never turned ashy or acrid, just stayed sweet, smooth and vanilla-y through the whole bowl. Only got some bite and bad flavours when I tried puffing this thing like a freight train. There is a little 'artificial' taste. Chemical like? Whatever it is, it's very very mild and I only notice it if I search for it when smoking. The wife and kids always like the smell of this and it is what I usually end up smoking when we go for walks in the evening or to the park/playground. For aromatic smokers, this should be on the list of 'To smoke'. A good practicing tobacco as well. I learned to pack, light and tamp with this, as well as learn a steady and slower pace with 1-Q. Can be found for cheap prices at almost any online retailer and even cheaper when a sale hits, even cheaper so in large bulk. (Note: I now blend this 50/50 with McClelland VBC as a standard aromatic house blend. vanilla is a little more prominent for me. I plan on putting equal amounts of this 1-Q/VBC blend together with my Autumn Evening remnants as well, in order to finally clear out my stash of AE)

Kind of like captain blacks grandfather. This stuff is more fulfilling, aged, and just has a full body flavor. Vanilla is present with a hint of fruit. Overall, the stuff tastes fantastic. Subtle but noticeable room note. Very aromatic and hits the spot time after time.

While not exactly what I would classify as a great smoke, 1Q isn't at all a bad one either. In the world of aromatics that claim to be bite free, you can do way, way worse than 1Q. Frankly, it's no wonder that this is the top selling bulk tobacco in the USA. Its simplicity is quite understated and it's so easy to smoke that at times I have been wowed just by its performance alone. I am talking “Woah, this bowl is done???,” kind of performance here.

1Q burns great with a subtle toasty tobacco note, just a hint of a vanilla high note with absolutely zero bite. It is one of the easiest all day/any time aromatics on the market and it's dirt cheap. All this of course adds up to its tremendous popularity.

Nonetheless, 1Q just isn't really anything to get very excited about, (heck I don't know, maybe it's the name) and truthfully I have never been wowed by its flavor. Regardless, this tobacco is the Steady-Eddy of aromatics and it deserves a recommendation for that. Will I buy more? No. Will I smoke the rest of what I have on hand? In due time, yes. If I could give it 2.5 stars I would, but 2 stars would be too low.

Ok. First this ain't the be all end all of blends but I will say this, Its a good, solid, light, sweet aromatic that smokes cool and doesn't bite. Its an all day smoke and it will grow on you once you start smoking it. You can't go wrong with this unless your a die hard English smoker. Even a burleyphile would appreciate this blend.

I enjoy Lane 1Q. It's very consistent, and mild, and easy to smoke. It's slightly sweet, slightly vanilla maybe slightly chocolatey. It can be an all day smoke for sure.

UPDATE Been blending this with some Pirate Kake for when I want a slightly sweeter taste to it, and have been LOVING the 1Q+PK combo! For an "aromatic english" flavour, I highly recommend trying that. But also have been enjoying 1Q for what it is on its own so much more as well lately.

I keep seeing pipe forums where someone says i think CB White is similar to RLP-6, then some old fart chimes in "theres no way RLP-6 is CB White. I noticed a hint of grassy cricket fart from the Virginia's and the Burley is slightly nutty but not in an Oatish way, more cracker jack.... Ok to settle this once and for all i called customer service at Skaninavian Tobacco and spoke to a manager named Marsha. RLP-6 is the bulk version of CB white, 1Q is Royal. both have a little extra PG to keep on store shelves for a decade if need be. Guys your tongues aint what the used to be, your palates scorched from reviewing 5,000 tobacco blends a year... Finally we can settle this debate and focus our efforts on finding Amelia Earhart...

This is a Golden Cavendish with a small portion of Black Cavendish mixed in. The hint of fire cured is what really sets this blend apart. When your smoking its Golden Cav, Golden Cav... Fire cured! When it pops up it adds a little complexity and dimension. I mix this with BCA half and half. The BCA calms and cools the 1Q and the 1Q adds flavor to the BCA. My favorite home mix :-)

My first reveiw WOW! A pipe smoker for over 25 years from Liberty long cut that I stole from my grandfather to strong Latakia and Perique, Lane 1-Q is by far the worlds best selling tobacco and my favorite. Local tobbaconists can doctor it up or down and sell it for more $ per oz and the 1-Q always comes out. It is sweet not cloying and I find it to be easy on the tounge and lungs. An aro fan and SWEET TOOTH to boot, so I may be a tad biased. Through my Dunhills, Chacoms, Petersons and Savinellis it never SOURED any of my collection as always after smoking I run a Bourbon soaked pipe cleaner through for good measure. For the last 10 years my blend is 1/2 1-Q and 1/2 BCA try that after a few bites of Haggen-Daas coffee ice cream!

This is the blend that has kept me enjoying the fine art of pipe smoking. An easy smoke with a very pleasant room note. While this is great for veterans it is perhaps the best blend to introduce new fellas to. I know if I hadn't been introduced to 1-Q (my local shop calls it Pop's #4) I would have laid the pipe down after the horrible experience with Half & Half. Thankfully 1-Q was out there waiting to bring joy to a beginning pipe smoker's bowl.

I don't see what all the fuss is about with this blend. To me it's one step above Captain Black. It has a bad chemical taste half way through the bowl and if not careful will give you tongue bit. This is going in my "end of the world" stash along with some others.

I am the epitome of newbie when it comes to pipe smoking and after reading a mess of reviews I decided that I wanted to try 1-Q first. Before I had even taken the tobacco out of the pouch, I could notice a strong vanilla scent. I packed my Churchwarden, let it rest for about half and hour and then lit the bowl. The smell was incredible with hints of spice and vanilla. The tobacco stayed lit and it was a smooth and enjoyable first smoke. No bite at all. I really am glad I picked 1-Q as my first.

The most goopy, ghostly, bite prone Lane Limited i have tried. Turned me off of aromatics completely. Sorry not my baccy. There are way better aromatics out there.

Only benefit of this baccy is its room note and availability.(Lane Limited tobaccos are always found jared up and renamed in tobacco shops)

First, let's clear up all the garbage. Lane does indeed own Captain Black, but this is NOT, I REPEAT NOT Captain Black Royal, Gold, White, or otherwise. While Captain Black does make a similarly flavored blend, the tobaccos used are not exactly the same and 1Q is cured differently than any of the Captain Black blends. 1Q is also sold as Tinderbox Wilshire, and is mistakenly sold as IQ in some stores. That's it. Even if you do find some of the blends "suspiciously similar" to Captain Black, 1Q is significantly less costly than Captain Black in most tobacco shops.

Those who assert 1Q is the same as Captain Black (insert blend here) and therefore is an inferior tobacco remind of "German- Engineering-Is-Superior car snobs" who oh-so-arrogantly proclaim that Lexus (insert model here) is the same car as the Toyota Camry and therefore an inferior automobile. Never mind that the Camry is a great automobile, or that the assertion isn't even remotely true (other than the fact that Toyota owns Lexus). Who needs facts when you have elitism and mindless condescension to compensate? "I'll just be over here smoking a proper English blend, driving my Mercedes (when it's not in the shop), arrogantly condescending to those of you who drive your cute little dependable Japanese automobiles and have the audacity to smoke aromatics. I mean everyone knows REAL PIPE SMOKERS don't smoke aromatics right?" Yeah... riiiight.

If you don't like aros, fine. No problem. But let's not act more refined, or well informed than we actually are by parroting the "Captain Black Lie". It makes one no more refined and, at this point, serves no real purpose as this rubbish has been regurgitated innumerable times by every would-be pipe-snob with an internet connection.

Now for the facts: This is a nice little bundle of pleasure that smokes well all day, but I especially like it when relaxing at night. The room note is very nice and I find myself getting compliments from non-smokers (who are the true test of room note) at the poker games I play in when I merely open the bag to pack my pipe. Open the flood gates when I light it up, as the compliments are showered upon this heavenly tobacco. In fact, this is the one blend I smoke that regularly compels total strangers to go out of their way to compliment me on the aroma.

The taste is pleasant as well; slightly refined, but simple and not overly complex or pretentious. It is not quite as mild as other aromatics I have smoked, but I would classify it as mild, nonetheless. The lack of complexity in the flavor profile is not necessarily a bad thing, as any great chef will tell you "Keep it simple, and execute" when it comes to cooking. And I guess that's the best way to describe this pleasant little nugget: "A simple, well executed blend" (I would add "with a heavenly room note").

I would give this blend 4 stars were it not for the following: While the smoke starts out smooth, it gets progressively harsher, and has more than a bit of a bite by the heel. I find myself often packing other milder blends at the bottom to minimize this. The blend also tends to smoke a bit wet, especially if you don't use a filter. This would be forgivable (I mean, it is an aromatic) were it not for the excessive bite at the end which can be quite extreme, even for an aro.

I do highly recommend this blend and wish I could give 3.5 stars. Alas, I cannot bring myself to award 4 stars as the flaws this blend does have are just a little too glaring for it to be "perfect" or "near perfect". If it burned a little smoother throughout, or had a bit less bite on the end, it just might have been the aro of my dreams.

UPDATE: Looking back, I remember my first experience with this blend being far more pleasurable, especially at the heel. I was originally smoking this in a small corncob pipe with a very small bore stem and a bowl circumference about the size of a U.S. dime. Needless to say the corncob burned much cooler than the Missouri Meerschum Ozark Mountain Cherry Hardwood Pipe I have recently been smoking; a pipe which probably has no business anywhere near the hotter burning Virginia-aromatics.

I put this blend into my corncob and enjoyed it to the fullest, yet again. Still, I couldn't be comfortable giving this blend 4 stars if it had to be smoked from such a small bowl. I decided to try it in a larger corncob pipe and got the same bite on the end - not a pleasant experience at all!

So, I did what any self-respecting aro-smoker should have done a long time ago and bought a briar pipe (nothing fancy, just a simple Dr. Grabow Duke). The tobacco smoked beautifully! No more bite on the end, unless I was smoking too quickly. Even then, the bite was nowhere near what it had been in the Ozark or the larger corncob. I should also disclose that I am no where near a refined, gentlemanly pipe smoker. I am just a guy who bought pipe one day because the pipe tobaccos were infinitely less expensive than cigarettes and smelled better in the tobacco shop. From my first bowl I fell in love. Smoking ceased to be a nicotine fix and suddenly became a wonderfully relaxing art form. So much so that the mere thought of a cigarette is now repulsive to me. Being a converted cigarette smoker, I tend to smoke way too fast. That being said, any aromatic that can stand up to my frenzied inhalation with minimal bite should surely be commended.

This blend smokes exceptionally cool with the filter in the pipe, but loses a degree of its flavor. That being said, I find the Dr. Grabow to be a damn fine pipe, especially considering it only cost $30.00. This blend smokes cool enough, even without the filter and retains full-flavor. Moisture is minimal, even at my inhuman pace, and I never experience a gurgle, even without the filter.

Long story short, when smoked from a decent briar wood, even one such as the Duke which is still not optimally designed for aros, this blend actually is the "near-perfect aro of my dreams".

I hereby upgrade my rating from 3 to 4 Stars. Highly Recommended!

You can't go wrong with this bulk blend. It smells a bit sweet when you open the lid with nice long strands of tobacco mixed with an ample supply of blackened cavendish. The vanilla is really an undertone if you will.

1-Q smokes really well. In loading the pipe I just let gravity fill the bowl and top it off with a push of the thumb then char it and finish with the final match. After about five minutes or so, I drop out the top ash and then it pretty much smokes all the way down to the heel with a minimum condensation. Even with aggressive smoking it doesn't bite me. The tobacco leaves a nice room-note.

Nothing real fancy in the taste, some sweetness in the wafting smoke some mild nicotine but does get some bitterness near the end, but then again, most of the tobaccos I've tried do that near the heel and I always smoke 'em all the way down.

1-Q is a good all-around starter or for those who want to try a light Aromatic.

Don't listen to the haters; there's a reason why this blend is so popular and so discussed. I get the impression reading the bad reviews that the naysayers either don't like aromatics on principle or just want to seem cultivated. Snobbishness notwithstanding, this is a GOOD blend, solid, a real pal.

It's got a bit more flavor than most aromatics- vanilla sweetness, but there's a little cinnamon spice to dance on the tongue too. Certainly not complicated, but sometimes simplicity is preferable. It burns cool and evenly, drops to the bottom of your bowl like an elevator. None of the goop or sour aftertaste that make aromatics so despised. And the best part is the room note- YOW! If you're a young pipe smoker like me, save your flavorful but foul blends for the porch and den. When you're stepping out on the town, 1-Q is the ultimate wingman. Light up a bowl of this near society and the ladies will walk a block just to smell it. Trust me, fellas, 1-Q can be a real friend to you.

There's absolutely nothing to bash here. 1-Q is comforting, charming, inexpensive and reliable. Next time I make a baccy run, I'm cellaring a pound or more.

This was given to me to sample whilst visiting our local tobacco shop back last year. Quickly became 1 of my favorites. My wife's as well of course. Mild taste. So if you're looking for strength. Look elsewhere. If you're looking for something mild with no muss or fuss. This should do it for you. Try others but always keep some 1-Q around as the good old standby. I do & will continue to do so.

Good old 1Q.

With Boswell, Just For Him and a variety of other aromatic blends getting a lot of love, 1Q sort of gets underrated IMO.

I'm not much of an aro. smoker but I've tried a bunch. I personally rarely enjoy heavily flavored Cavendish blends. But when I'm in the mood 1Q is as good as or better than many of the more popular boutique aromatics from Bowsells, Just For him et al.

It's easily as good as any of the Boswell aros and some swear up and down that Boswells Best is just renamed 1Q. I don't know if this is true and I don't care. What I do know is that I find 1Q to be as good as anything out there short of Sillems Black.

If you smoke aromatics and would like to try a classic give 1Q a shot. Just pretend it has a cooler name involving some manner of a Hobbit or Grandma's baked goods and you'll be quite pleased I think.

1Q also makes an interesting addition to English/Balkan blends to create an very enjoyable Aromatic English. Give it a try if you're so inclined and I think you'll find it enjoyable.

Bottom line is this an premium blend? No. But neither are many of the more highly hyped aromatic blends available today and 1Q is a classic that anyone looking for a nice room note and sweet tooth satisfier in a mild and relatively dry smoke should experience.

Another simple aromatic.I love aromatics,but this one is not a keeper.It is too mild for my taste,not enough flavor.It doesnt burn very well,and smells better than it taste.I wiil sum this one up as a low-grade simple aromatic.

I bought this from the Tinderbox in Alpharetta since I was running low on 'baccy and I needed a quick fix. This wasn't the ticket. Although I usually smoke straight burley or VA rather than flavoured blends, I figured that since Wilshire/1-Q was so popular that it must be somewhat decent, and the smell in the glass jar was enticing, so I bought an ounce. The experience I had in my Stanwell Featherweight was not conducive to the smell I experienced in the jar. The taste was like caramelizing sugar at best, and at worst, had a strong chemical taste. Apparently this blend is guilty of too much Propylene Glycol. The chemical taste overwhelmed me and I had to dump out the pipe. I definitely would not recommend this to anyone else.

@ Jshrader: You should ask Adam at the Tinderbox in Atlanta for McClelland 5100 if you haven't tried it yet. It's a light, sweet unflavored Virginia that smokes well and dry.

This is great step up for CBW smokers. It does not have the heavy humidor chemical taste of CBW, and leans more to the vanilla side in taste. It is mild to the tongue and far less likely to cause bite. It does need to be dried a bit from the packaging however as it is a little damp and will steam burn the tongue when fresh. The vanilla taste is well pronounced and pleasant without being overpowering. Others around you tend to enjoy the smell as well. Ash tends to cake on top so a small turn midway thru seems to help the burn be consistent.

From what I understand this is the number one bulk tobacco in the United States. I can see why, it smokes great on its own and also mixes well with about anything you throw at it. I would never smoke it all day but it is nice every once and a while. It has just a bit of sweetness and the Cavendish is fairly mild, but to be honest the reason to smoke this stuff is to please the people around you. I think that a lot of black Cavendish tobaccos should be cut with this tobacco to help in the burning process.

This was the first pipe tobacco I smoked way back in 1981 and this is the first pipe tobacco I am reviewing 27 years later. A co-worker and I took up pipe smoking at the same time in the winter of 1981. There was a pipe shop in town called Ye Olde Pipe Shoppe. Its still here in town, and in a twist of fate a current co-worker now owns it (just not the same co-worker that I began my pipe smoking journey with a lifetime ago). At my local shop 1-Q was (and still is) sold under the moniker of "Number 4".

1-Q has an aroma in the bag that smells wonderfully and a room note that always draws commments of "that smells good". Unfortunately it doesn't have a taste that equals the aroma. I find 1-Q to be very mild in strength and taste with a medium vanilla and possibly cocoa flavor. To me it seems to produce as much steam as smoke and leaves a wet dottle in the pipe. The smoke/steam combination easily becomes hot. Also, if I smoke it at night it leaves a really bad aftertaste in my mouth the next morning; maybe its just my body chemistry. I somewhat recommend this blend to pipe smokers and hold a nostalgic spot in my heart for this as it was my first smoke. I sometimes smoke this as a rememberance of for me where it all started. Two stars for 1-Q.

I am giving this 2 stars due to it not being strong enough (nicotine) or flavorful enough. I absolutely love the smell if someone else is smoking it. It can bite if smoked too fast, gurgles in the briar at times and makes a mess of your pipe. Did I mention it smells good? The tobacco in the bulk jar smells good, lit up it smells good and it tastes like, well, AIR mostly. That's all I really get out of it. That and some steam?! I'd never knock anybody for smoking it, I like the smell too much! I really wish it had more taste, I'd smoke this a lot.

This tobacco has a wonderful room note. My wife loves the smell. I currently smoke English tobaccos - mostly Penzance. I started smoking this aromatic around 1975 and have not smoked it for some time until recently. Alas, it smokes a bit wet, but over all not a bad smoke for a cased tobacco. The taste is nice and I like it as a change of pace, and especially when smoking around others, who invariably enjoy the room note.

At the time I bought this I was only an aromatic smoker mainly buying drugstore pouches like Capt. Black. This seemed like an obvious starting point for trying out bulk blends. Also bought some BCA and RLP-6. Out of the three, this one ranked last, but really I don't think there's a whole lot of difference in most of these LL aromatic blends. They all share the same hot, wet smoking properties and an undefinable coconut/vanilla/ameretto essence. Sweet with a bitter ending. You could do worse.

I've already reviewed this blend, see below. But I have a question which I've not been able to find an answer to. How did it get the name 1Q? Somebody out there has to know?

Well now, where to begin? I'd been wanting to try this blend for quite some time, and finally found a local tobacconist who carries the stuff. He informed me that this was Lane's bulk version of Captain Black Royal, but I found this to be a much sweeter blend. It also has a higher moisture content as well, but it smoked easier than I would have thought, given it's moisture level. Great room note, and I liked the taste. I think if this were left to, hopefully, dry out a bit, it might find it's way into my regular rotation. Good stuff for a beginner to sample. I might even try adding a bit of burley to this. I'll keep you posted...

When returning to pipe smoking a couple months back, this was the obvious choice. A reasonably priced bulk that every noteworthy smoke shop carries (here in Buffalo it is known as "Seville") and it far outranks Captain Black.

I have strayed from all things aromatic, but I always have an ounce of this on hand and it is always great to go back to when I dont know what mood Im in. The smell in the bag is wonderfull. I would recommend drying this before you smoke it. Laying it out overnight does really well. Lights and burns well in a small to medium bowl.

The taste is monotone in my opinion, and almost non descriptive. But it is a smooth smoke with no bite and would best be described as a great working in the yard tobacco. For those that say it ruins a pipe... you must be doing something wrong. My unlce smoked this forever and I have a few of his pipes, there is no noticeable residue at all... and as far as tounge bite goes... as with any tobacco... dont puff like an air pump and you shouldn't have a problem.

Room note is always great and one of the few I can smoke in my mothers house.

Overall, not bad tobacco. Would say this is a great starter tobacco and recommend it over Capt. Black anyday.

I used to smoke this 99% of the time A great blend for the newbie,but still has a place in the rotation of the seasoned vet. A real girl getter in the aroma department. Sort of vanilla of maybe caramel? some say chocolate I personally cant taste chocolate in this. You can smoke it all day, but keep lots of pipe cleaners,this can be goopy. I like it in a system pipe, but you have to work hard at keeping them fresh. Its been about a year since i bought this i may pick up a few ounces this weekend for nostalgia.

This has been one of my favorites for a long time. I would recommend 1Q to any new pipe smoker, and to anyone who has never tried it. This is the tobacco I smoke when I want to relax and enjoy a good book. It burns cool, finishes well, and leaves a fine, gray ash. I have smoked this in everything from cobs to Dr. Grabows to Peterson's, and there is never a surprise or disappointment.

Update: I have smoked mild English blends in a pipe after smoking 1Q, and find no hold-over flavor from the 1Q. I have done this in 3 Peterson's and a Parker with no bad effects at all. =============================================================

Update: 05/28/06 The more non-aromatics I try, the more I am bored with 1-Q. I'm not saying it's a bad tobacco, I just think it gets boring after sampling non-aromatics. This may just be headed to the "once in a loooooooooonnnnnnnggg while" tobaccos.

I believe that people who choose to smoke this have the smell of the room dominate their impressions more than the taste of the tobacco.

Warning to pipe owners: this half-life of this stuff will cause it to leave its mark in the bowl to near eternity. I wouldn't recommend using your best pipes on this blend unless you love this stuff.

And, a lot of people do love this stuff. It is the most popular bulk tobacco, by far, of any in the local shops. I know (and pity) people who smoke nothing but 1Q. And, I am glad to be around when they do, as it does smell great.

But, this blend won't see any more action in my pipes.

RLP6 and HS3 are decent when their all I can get, so I do smoke Lane blends when neccisary. However, I have to wonder how this is the #1 selling bulk tobacco. Burns hot and wet, bites like a wolverine, leaves gobs of goop and will booger up your pallate and your pipe. The aroma is the only thing going for this blend. Overall, this is horrid even for Lane. I'll leave this one for the rest of the population reportedly buying in mass quantities. RLP6 and HS3 are much better offerings.

Ah yes..This is called All day Long in my local B&M. Smells good and ....well thats about it. Oh yeah it tastes like...steam. Great room note though. Perhaps they could make this in an insense stick. 1-Q is a fairly run-of-the-mill prototypical aromatic designed for neophyte smokers. I cannot, for the life of me, understand this blends popularity unless there are really that many good folk experimenting with pipe smoking at any one time. Calling it "bad" would be a disservice but it gets cloying real fast and tends to mistreat your beloved briar to a nasty bowl bath. Packs easily but requires a few re-lights due to it's artificial moisture level (PG?). I bought an ounce of this but highly doubt I'll finish more than the few bowls I've already had; there are just too many better blends out there. Caveat emptor.

Seriously, there must be something wrong with the batch I got because it has no flavor and burns the eyes. I cleaned out my pipe and tried another blend to see if it was just my taste being off, but the other blend smoked just fine. All I can think is that this was a contamination issue.

I was waiting to taste Lane Limited - 1 - Q and the end of summer seems to be a nice period for this. It is an elegant aromatic blend. Vanilla and caramel flavors are well expressed in the smoke and some other aromas from Virginia, like grass, sugar, or citrus, are present. The moisture was a little high so it was necessary to dry it a little bit, but it smoked well. A recommended aromatic blend for a long and relaxing smoke.

I started out with this as my first tobacco I purchased in bulk. It was good, not great. It’s has an off flavor, and sour smell. Smoke was hotter and had some bite to it. I let it age and still no real change. I heard so much about this as good basic blend. Gave most of it away.

It's only the world's best selling pipe tobacco; and for good reason. Pleasant to puff on and pleasant for those around you. I have never met anyone that's been offended by Lane Limited 1-Q.

It's mild, you're not tasting the flavoring, just a little nuttiness and the hint of tobacco. It's mostly hot air. It doesn't bite at all and is very forgiving of however you might smoke.

The room note though? Heavenly. People love it. They get nostalgic for it, even. It's a certified banger in the smells department. You want to be a people-pleaser? This is what you smoke,

All that said, there are way better aromatics out there. I'll list those better aromatics in the "Similar To" section.

Reliable and consistent aromatic. Review based on a jar opened intermittently with over several years. Doesn’t seem to get stale or lose much character over time. Can smoke this absent-mindedly with pipe clenched in jaw and continuous puffing for an hour. Great fun to have a constant volume of that typical, nostalgic aroma pipe smoke hovering all around one’s hair, beard, pullover etc. Vanilla flavour base and and also has some slight tobacco bitterness to satisfy. Few relights required when using medium density packing using air pocket or Franck methods.

Typically prefer unflavored tobacco but this is good from time to time to avoid annoying bystanders. Builds a good cake and should be used in dedicated filtered or unfiltered pipes, the former being a bit smoother. Try 9 mm, paper or Brigham maple distillator systems for different nuances.

Overall, recommended as a simple, unpretentious blend.

There really isn’t too much to talk about the flavor of 1Q. It’s definitely one of those aromatics that really only has a light hint of vanilla with hot air, but where this blend really shines is both in the room note and how easy it is to smoke.

This is my go to blend to smoke around other people. My general rule is that I smoke non-aromatics if I’m alone and aromatics if I’m around other people, and this one has always gotten compliments.

It’s also very easy to smoke. No bite, and easy to keep lit. For a novice smoker who has their heart on aromatics, it’s the blend I always recommend.

If 1-Q was a religion, it would be the sit in your pew, sing quietly and try not to go out of key, and certainly don’t make any waves that might get noticed kinda church . Yah, the congregation’s friendly enough and the priest sure knows how to keep to a 5 minute homily about how we should all be nice folks, oh, and we can dress down here on Sunday mornings too……it’s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t wanna do it every day as there’s so much more to the world…. Or maybe a better analogy would be to listen to Glenn Miller over Thelonius Monk because I just can’t understand brilliance over the way music oughta be. That’s my take on Lane Ltd. 1-Q , but I can see why it’s the most popular tobacco on the planet. It is a quality pipe tobacco that never gets hot and burns well with a little to much flavoring for my taste and that’s why I give Half and Half a full star over 1-Q, it just has more character. I recommend this for beginners who have limited expectations of pipe tobacco.

As a newly returned to the hobby smoker (having smoked a pipe moderately between 1983 and 2003), I expected to enjoy this tobacco more. At first, I assumed my problems were due to having to relearn how to smoke slowly and to savor a pipe, or the fact that I had a brand spanking new briar pipe to break in (a Briarworks Bent Bulldog), or some combination of both. I ended up with a case of tongue bite like I never remember having before. So, I went to other pipes, and other mild and moderate Burley Blends. No problem. They burn well. They stay lit. They smoke cool. They seem to have a bigger nic hit which is not necessarily a positive, but otherwise, I feel like a champion pipe smoker with a nice burley blend (be it Founding Fathers, HH Burley Flake, or Butternut Burley). I don't know what it is with 1Q in this particular pipe, but it burns my tongue, it goes out often (and I've tried leaving the bag open for a couple of days), and my tongue is so unhappy by mid bowl, I don't dare try to relight it at the bottom of a bowl. I have a new Peterson 221 that I'm breaking in with burley blends--and it is visibly building cake after 2 bowls. 5 bowls of 1Q in the briarworks pipe and it still looks brand new. So, consider this a status report. I plan to try some burleys in the briarworks pipe. I plan to try 1q in a cobb I have coming and in the peterson. Maybe it's the pipe? I suspect it's the blend though. I'll report back in a couple of weeks. I have yet to scour the 300 plus reviews of this blend on this site to find anyone with a similar experience with this blend. It's so popular I can only assume the problem is with me. But for the tongue bite and what I expect is a bit too much moisture in my bag, I enjoy the taste and aroma of this blend. I just have better luck smoking less/non aromatic burley blends. I tried Nutty Irishman in the same pipe as 1q and had a similar experience. So, this is my first review and take what I say with a hefty grain of salt as I relearn this hobby.

I've been a piper for a long time. I am partial to aromatics but enjoy all types. Lane 1Q is among my favorite low cost aromatic tobaccos. My favorite aromatic is Cult Blood Red Moon and my favorite plug is Peterson's Perfect Plug. I tell you that so you see where my tastes lie. Lane 1Q sits somewhere between these favorites. It smells wonderful, tastes great and burns well. I don't have to babysit it much and I consider it a great all day smoke. It mixes great with other tobaccos and doesn't seem to ghost my pipes although I don't really pay attention to ghosting. Doesn't bother me. I'm no tobacco snob. I smoke what I like and try to deliver honest, unpretentious reviews about what I think. I get 1Q at my local tobbaconist for about $5 per ounce. Not the cheapest tobacco but not expensive. I think it's a good value for quality tobacco. Bear in mind that I like all Captain Black varieties too. There have only been a few tobacco blends that I just can't smoke so I'm not too picky. 1Q has a perfect sweetness for me sort of vanilla carmel but I still taste the tobacco. Doesn't bite too bad either. Not much of a nicotine hit but I don't like too much nicotine anyway (be careful with the 3P mentioned above). So there ya go. My opinion is that 1Q is widely available, good value, pleasant taste/smell, good burning, quality tobacco that plays well with others. I like to keep a Mason jar with the remnants of my favorite blends all together. Funny that this leftover mish-mash is often my favorite blend lol.🤠👍

Prep: Unlike most aromatics, 1Q arrives near perfect, as the casing is quite light.

For better or for worse (depending on your preference) this blend is near one dimensional. You wont find a variety of notes like other aromatic blends out there, but what it does offer, I believe it offers well. The vanilla is light, allowing the virginia leaf to come forward. Due to the light flavoring, it smokes cooler than other aros and isnt goopy. It is a great candidate for a "throw in your pipe and forget it" blend. There is a reason is has been popular over the decades. 7.5/10

Boring and sweet, it doesn't have a good room note or flavor. It's the most recommended tobacco I've come across, and I bought 7 oz thinking I'd like it for sure. The first jar didn't live up to the hype.

I threw away some to open up a jar for other tobaccos. Now I'm smoking from the second jar. Nothing special, so I keep it in the garage for when I'm crafting something and don't need/want to stop and think about the tobacco I'm smoking

First order of business, an open and honest personal admission. I am not a routine and significant consumer of aromatic tobacco blends. Unlike in the beginnings of my venture into the world of piping, nowadays my personal preferences tend to lean more toward the complex mixtures. Nonetheless, I have smoked just a virtual plethora of different aro products from different blenders over the years. As such, I do bring an experienced and informed opinion for discussion. So, let us get that reference out of the way for now, but do take that initial statement for what it is worth.

At present, nonetheless, I do like to partake in the occasional diversion of enjoyable but a select collection of aromatics blends. When I say select, what I mean is that is the sum result of smoking a wide spectrum of available products and parsing those down to a handful of characters that I would consider my “go-to’s” for the aromatic genre.

Now we come to Lane Limited’s 1Q. In all my past glory I had never tried this mixture. Why, I’m not sure? 1Q it is probably one of the most readily available product offerings at the countess scores of B&M’s and e-retailers in operations today. In deference to Lane’s accomplishment, this mix is in fact, one of the largest selling pipe tobacco blends on the market today.

It is almost predictable when a novice pipe smoker asks for recommendations from the more experienced crowd on which blends to try, they are inundated with a barrage of popular aromatics from the usual suspect blenders. 1Q is ALWAYS one that is mentioned. So, I thought, what the heck and finally purchased an ounce to see what all the buzz was about.

Lane Limited’s 1Q is relatively inexpensive relative to other competing blends, which is a significant plus that I cannot deny. It is a stereo-typical of the genre in summation. A principally Virginia-based recipe combining bright leaf with golden Cavendish (VA) infused with vanilla and more than likely cased in honey based upon the flavoring. The presentation is a genuinely nice ribbon-cut appearance with consistent texture and pillowing. The pouch note of this tobacco is generally a light sweet perfume of decided vanilla-caramelly essence with just trace notes of the native grassy nuisances from the based tobacco. Like most aro’s, 1Q is a characteristically wet straight out of the bag and therefore requires a considerable level of set-up for optimum burning.

Upon lighting, one will experience a very light airy, thin-bodied but smooth textured smoke. 1Q is most definitely a very, very mild and uncomplicated recipe. It is, quite honestly, unimpressive as to body and richness in the plume that it does produce. The ensuing room note is very light, fleeting, but pleasant.

Regarding the taste, the additive casing and topping dominant the experience. What you taste is the full presence of the sweeteners and almost no native tobacco flavors. Regardless, it does offer a pleasant register of rich vanilla/honey and darker caramel notes. There is that standard astringent chemical aftertaste that lingers on your tongue unfortunately. I kind of equate that to the sensation one gets when licking the adhesive on a mailing envelop. You know the sticky, dry, chapped lips feeling. It’s an aromatic which is par for the course.

I felt that 1Q burned a little hotter and is somewhat goopy in the bowl despite that extended drying effort. This is more than likely the affect of the added sugars/steams produced by the burning of the same. I did not, however, receive any tongue bite or blistering which was appealing.

Overall, I see this as a middle of the road for the subject category. It is a nice light mixture that offers an abundance of sweetness; reminds me of the Captain Black family. Personally, I have had livelier, quality-blended aromatics. 1Q did not wow me by any means; too light on native taste/body and overall presence. Having stated all that, this does not detract from the mass appeal of this tobacco to many enthusiasts. If you favor a sweet light airy, unassuming blend then you probably will like 1Q. It is cheaply priced and readily available; two big pluses. A simple pleasing all-day smoke that can be enjoyed by many. Just didn’t float my boat.

My 1st bulk purchase I ever made was this (not including large cans/tins). This is a pretty good smoke, with crowd pleasing note. Can't add anything more that hasn't already been stated. For me, it was just too mild overall. I think I kept trying to build flavor out of it, and would end up burning my tongue. I'll blame that on my tastes and technique, and not the tobacco. Having smoked a goodly amount of royal pouch Capt. Black, I totally get the connection. They are just a bit too mild flavored for me. I mean if you are reaching for this type of flavor, you want flavor. I can tone down, much easier than turn up. I much prefer Lane's R version or Capt.Black White. Either way you have to try it, so I call it recommended.

I have heard so much about this tobacco over the years I purchased some. It took an initial char light well, and then just a couple of more relights during a smoke. The pouch note was great and the room note was pleasant, what there was of it. I prefer aromatics, but stronger ones than this one.

It burns clean and cool, and will not bite. This would be a great mixer for taming down an overly strong blend.

This blend is very limited in what it offers taste wise. It consists mainly of vanilla, and is a very smooth tobacco. It offers no bite, but no excitement either. The room note, hoever, is delightful. It apparently is the best selling bulk tobacco in the country. I did not discern any nicotine here, but several relights are required. Boring but inoffensive. A good smoke to have on hand when you are going to be out with friends.

To me, this was disgustingly cloying. Worse than Captain Black. Perhaps this is because I do not care for heavily aromatic tobacco and prefer the actual taste of tobacco. This is possibly the only bad review I have done here but I simply couldn’t help it.

This was my first pipe tobacco. I fell I love when I first smelled her. It smells like oatmeal raisin cookies. I have a half of pound sitting in my basement for a year and I haven’t smoked 1Q in about that much time.

Not sure if the extra age makes a difference (it doesn’t) but man I remember why I love this so much. Sweet and creamy smoke. Nothing complicated, just a wonderful taste and smell. If you’re just staring out this is a must try. To me it’s the perfect aromatic mild and sweet tobacco.

On another note some people compare this to Captain Black Royal. They are absolutely not the same.

As I smoked this blend for the first time I kept trying to remember what flavor I had read it was supposed to have. I finally settled that some people must think this tastes like vanilla. I wouldn't go that far, its a bit like vanilla, little bit creamy as well and definatly sweet. If I had smoked a half bowl I would consistantly give this a three star, the flavor is not my favorite but not at all unpleasant eather. However, a little over halfway a bitterness starts creeping in and the bottome quarter is not worth smoking at all. I tried this in some briar pipes to start but after a bit decided it needed to stay in a cob where it smokes a little dryer and doesn't impact my other pipes and tobaccos. The room note and benefit of being pleasant to those around you is definatley worth noting. The kids actually told me I smelled nice after I came back from a walk with this tobacco. Overall for me its not really something I can see myself coming back to but does fit a niche as something with a nice room note.

This tobacco has a nice scent, but is very mild. Almost like smoking air. The pouch note was good and the moisture was just right, but I was not impressed. It will not bite, and does not require a lot of relights. Burns all the way to the bottom of the bowl at an average speed but just lacks substance.

There are plenty of vanilla aromatics out there, yet this one happens to be the most popular one of choice for tobacco connoisseurs. However, I don't think this is the best vanilla aromatic out there, but this is a blend that I will always recommend to beginners just getting started out in the hobby. It burns well and evenly for an aromatic, and smells great to anyone sitting around you.

UPDATE: Dropping my rating of this blend from 3 to 2. Still a great aromatic - it's just that there's much better ones out there. I recommend Sutliff Vanilla Custard.

I smoked this on a regular basis many years ago, treated as a stand alone vanilla flavoured Virginia, I found it to be a little dull and flat, although the vanilla did just about made itself known. Mixed with an equal part quality black Cavendish, this became an excellent all day aromatic with a very pleasing room note. I have now departed from the aro scene, preceding by far Virginia plug tobacco.

1 1/2 stars as a stand alone and 1 1/2 stars if mixed, which would give it a 3 star rating, but alas, we are reviewing the vanilla / Virginia offering, ergo 2 stars.

After hearing how great 1-Q was, I was super excited to try it. Especially knowing how affordable it was, I was awaiting anxiously for it to arrive in the mail.

The only thing I can say is how happy I bought the smallest size available. It honestly doesn't taste bad. It has the hallmark tastes for a standard aromatic with a good bit of cavendish. But the quality of the leaf is what killed it for me. I realize I get what I am paying for, but I just had high hopes after hearing everyone rave about it.
