Jack Lee Blend Blackstrap

I found this tobacco quite by accident while surfing idly through the internet. Took a while to find out where and how to get some as his website is not up yet. In the "purchased from" box below, you will see where to order from. This is an aromatic tobacco. An American style aromatic, I like these kinds of tobaccos but so few of them are really top notch. The tobacco in the pouch is predominately brown which I suspect is burly with a generous amount of (flecks) of black Cavendish and one can even see strands of bright Virginia. Seems to be ribbon cut or long shreds. Pouch smell is really heavenly. It does have a caramel like aroma and something that really is like molasses. The tobacco feels fresh; springy not dry, but not overly moist. The casing was applied thoroughly with a fine light hand. Packed well, although the ribbony nature of the tobacco makes the loose strands seem like they want to escape. I'm not much on charring lights. When I apply the match, I go for a full robust lighting, An aggressive chuffing ignition with lots of smoke and I can generally go for 45 minutes to an hour without a relight. This one of the very few tobaccos that I can say truthfully, really does taste like it smells. If you like aromatics, it is flavorful without being over the top. Very nice. Midway through the bowl a kind of spicy note comes in. A very soft mellow smoke. Really good for sitting out on the porch and not thinking about too much at all. Very pleasant. No gurgling in this one. Can't say it burnt to white ash, but just a few partially burned sprigs left at the end. The bowls I smoked were dry at the end. The blurb that Jack Lee uses to describe it, says it is molassesy. You know what, I think that is just about the perfect word for this blend. It has found a permanent place in my rotation. I will be ordering more soon, and I hope to be trying some of his other blends as well. Looks like he has several including creations that might favor English type blends. The aromas that waft from the bag reminds one of deep, dark gingerbread. Not gingerbread cookies but, that super dark ginger cake that grandmother used to make and serve with lemon sauce. The dark, sweet, spice note is very enticing.

Smoked in a no-name vintage Italian briarwood, the toasting light fills your mouth with dark, sweet café Cubano with an overtone of cocoa and baked goods. Despite the initial darkness, the true light gives a lightness at the back of the tongue with the flavor of pecans and shortbread and vanilla. As the bowl continues, the flavor moves towards the deep, dark gingerbread cake promised in the tin notes. The best part is it's not too sweet. The pleasant room note reminds one of caramelized sugar, cocoa, and creme brûlée although it does linger a little ashy. This is a really nice after dinner smoke.
