HU Tobacco Daddy Gefftl
(2.86)
Daddy Gefftl is both a cranky and highly interesting mixture. Unflavored black cavendish, dark fired Kentucky and a pinch of Cypriot latakia makes it a near black mixture. A fresh floral aroma provides a delicious contrast to the precious tobacco choice. This results in a one of a kind medium-bodied aromatic and spicy blend. A truly special blend, both adorable and exceptional, as its name.

Very peculiar blend from HU tobacco.
After crowbarring open the lid of the tin you get a blast of citrus. Not a scent or a suggestion but a huge waft of orange, tangerine, mandarin and grapefruit. It's not sweet and fruity but sour, almost bitter and acidic like someone has put just the fruit peel and pith in. The latakia undercuts all this to give a very strange and dark brew indeed.
It's also very dry. On reflection I should have jarred and hydrated this , but I didn't and ended up with a tin of dusty dry black crumbs. My own fault, but somehow I don't think it wouldn't have much difference to the overall experience anyway as it turned out.
The smoke was certainly different, yet two dimensional, with the orange giving way to a hefty dose of latakia, that hacked it's way from the bottom of the mix and stays there throughout giving you a mouthful of citrus-flavoured tar. At first I found it interesting, but I got bored of it after half a dozen bowls, even in rotation. In the end I found myself despising it and I was glad to see the last crumbly, brittle strand in the tin. It burnt down quite quickly and I was glad of this because coming back to a cooled pipe of this stuff is not a good idea.
I certainly wouldn't repeat this purchase, and can't recommend it but it is worth trying if you like the sound of it.

The woody, spicy, earthy, floral, herbal, lightly sour, mildly nutty dark fired Kentucky is the star component. The unflavored black cavendish adds a smoothing sugar sweetness in a support role. The Cyprian Latakia is a minor component that provides a smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet flavor push to the blend. The fruit topping is a lightly applied tart lemon, and perhaps a little orange. The mild floral topping appears to be geranium, and it melds well with the other flavors. The toppings do tone down the varietals just a little. They also serve to create a well melded, very consistent woody sweet, moderately spicy flavor that, despite the spice content, is smoother than one might expect. The nicotine, strength, and taste levels are medium, though the nic-hit gathers just a little more strength as you get toward the finish. Burns at a reasonable rate, cool and clean with no dull or harsh spots, and won’t bite. Requires few relights, and leaves little moisture in the bowl, and burns to ash. The aftertaste pleasantly lingers a little, and the floral room note is decent to most noses. Could be an all day smoke.

A very full aromatic / English. Delicious tobacco that is not suppressed by topping/casing (I'm just not sure which one it is). When you just pop the tin and smoke your first one - topping will be too much - pop it, give it a few days to rest and it'll be perfect. I think they did topping with aromatic oils rather than with chemo and it pays off. Topping tastes like marzipan + maybe lemon + some floral. But what really sets this tobacco aside is high quality leaf, finely balanced, moisture is just right, you can put it aside and resume smoking - it doesn't go bitter. LA and Kentucky play along nicely rounded harmoniously by Cav. It looks rusty brown like no other baccy I know. A keeper for your stash. I normally avoid aromatics - this is an exception because of high quality tobacco used and blended perfectly shining right there in your pipe. Can be an all day smoke. No bite, no bitter. And no VA - aren't you tired of it being everywhere? I know I am.

Not my bowl of baccy.
Citrus & floral aromatic blend with a touch of Latakia. Unfortunately, through the first half of the bowl, the Latakia scent kicks back like the horse manure it is! Don't get me wrong, I love Latakia blends. Though, when I think of an aromatic Latakia blend, Sillems black is the one I genuinely like. Daddy Gefftl has good burning qualities, the overall smoke is sweet, but it's also very uninteresting. Probably I didn't like it as much as I thought I would due to the citrus & floral thing going on throughout the smoke.

First of all, please take note that I’m not an expert in aromatics, I rarely smoke aromatics (I’m with the english and balkan blends) and I probably don’t have to best experience, but here goes my review.
So, we have a cut that varies between coarse cut, cross cut, maybe ribbon. It’s not a standard cut for sure, but a strange variation.
Lots of black leafs, some brown and dark brown leafs and just a little golden in there. So, dark in appearance (obviously, since it has black cavendish, dark fired kentucky and latakia).
Leaves some dottle and humidity after the smoke.
Tin note and room note are excellent, and I’ll elaborate below.
First experience:
The tin note is very nice, clearly floral essences, berries, maybe a little citrus in the back, a little vanilla. Smelled very similar to Cellini Classico.
At first I got it a bit too much on the dry side, but I smoked it as it was.
The first light was very, very interesting, a very sweet aroma filled my mouth definitely with floral essences, sweetness but not citrus (not yet). Reminded me a bit of Cellini Classico.
The smoke was very good, it was cool, sweet, soft, silky I can say, like a silk that touches your tongue. Burns very well, absolutely no tongue bite, doesn’t even matter how hard you draw, there’s no tongue bite. Like I said, there’s a very good cold smoke, smooth and silky and sweet. Definitely floral essences, but I didn’t detect any citrus yet. It even tastes a bit like Cellini, but I’m not a very experienced aromatic smoker so my palette for aromatics is not well developed but even so, I enjoy this even if it’s not as strong in taste like Cellini.
I’m very pleased with the way that it burns, it doesn’t go off and even though I’m smoking it in a Peterson Sherlock Holmes Original, which usually gets hot due to the bad briar and the thin walls, this time it didn’t cause any such trouble, so it must be the black cavendish and the dark fired kentucky that keep this away from burning very hot, and of course, the absence of virginia makes it easier in this case, I think the black cavendish is what helps this blend keep everything in place, taking the flavors from the other tobaccos and the casing.
It is very very low on nicotine so halfway to the bowl I felt the need to smoke a cigarette, which I know is a heresy among pipe smokers but I need some nicotine in my tobacco. So I thought I should mention this, it’s very low on nicotine, you barely sense that it’s a tobacco that you’re smoking but otherwise it’s very good. The women around you will fall in love with the smell. Perfect room note.
After getting past half the bowl, it seemed that the aroma faded a bit, there was only a touch of those floral essences, it was more like smoking a cold smoke (at least it’s not hot lol), it still burned ok, but I decided to put it down a bit and relight it for the third time.
The third match light, and the taste is almost gone, it delivered a cool smoke but with almost no taste. Just very little floral essences in background. I didn’t feel anything, no taste of tobacco, of floral essences, of citrus. So I got a bit disappointed.
At the end of the bowl there was a little appearance of the floral essence and a bit of natural sugar, like it was the last thing this blend tried to say, like “don’t forget me”. So, this was the first experience with this blend.
Middle experience
I rehydrated it a bit this time.
Yes, this one definitely smells wonderful. Floral essences, berries, small notes of vanilla and honey, a little spice in there as well. Again, very similar to Cellini Classico.
Again, a cool smoke, but doesn’t deliver much taste. So, it’s an aromatic to some point, but then it doesn’t go neither in the oriental direction or english direction with the dark fired kentucky or latakia, and the casing is almost unnoticeable. It’s a very mild taste where I need to search for at least a little dark fired or latakia. They seem to be there, but they’re probably too shy to come out. There is a slight taste of citrus this time, rather than the floral which I first detected.
By the middle of the bowl I started to think I’m just smoking cool air. Not even some nicotine in there, I had to put down the pipe and be a heretic again by lighting up a cigarette. It smokes good and slow, and in the Sherlock Holmes Original it took me 30 minutes to get to the middle of the bowl. I had to put it down because it bored me and felt the need of a bit of nicotine. Sorry, it’s too mild for me in terms of strength, nicotine, taste, flavor.
All I can say it has a very nice tin note and room note, but the rest... just not for me.
Some bowls were different however, and if you want to get some taste make sure the tobacco is dried enough. If it’s wet, even as wet as most the tobaccos you smoke, then dry it even more. I noticed this after i left my pipe for an hour after I smoked from it, and when I relight it I felt it had more flavour and taste. So after that, at the next bowl I decided to let it dry more than usually. Yes, it helps. Not much, but still, it gives you some taste, if only it was more pronounced and not so mild.
Final experience
Almost done! It was hard for me to smoke this blend. But since I opened it up, I wanted to go all the way and try to find anything that I might have missed.
Tin note: Citrus, something spicy (?!), berries, small notes of vanilla and honey.
Medium humidity this time.
Lights up fairly easily. Still, a cold, smooth smoke, but very little aroma. Some vanilla taste and citrus, a little honey note and liquorice, fair taste of natural virginia sweetness (even if it doesn’t have virginia in it, or so it says). It is fairly sweet, but fades away quickly.
Again, at the end of the bowl, there was this last “goodbye” thing the tobacco has to say, a little aroma but nothing special.
When you light it, it delivers a little taste, but then fades away and turns into a cold smoke with no taste. Burns well, smells great, but “tastewise” it’s poor. It would’ve been a great blend, since it has all the other qualities, but the taste is too mild, almost absent. Maybe it’s something with the one that I got, maybe it wasn’t sealed well, maybe it was a minor mistake with this tin and other tins would be different.
FINAL ARGUMENT:
Right now, after I finished writing this review, I decided to read the other reviews as well and I’m amazed by the difference between my experience and the experience of the other fellow pipe smokers. It’s either the tobacco that I got or it’s just me. But this was my experience.

Hans is getting world wide recognition and praise for his excellent non-aromatics but I think his aromatics deserve a closer look. Let me say that I think the term aromatic has negative connotations that come with it and I would prefer to call them scented tobaccos but for the sake of simplicity I will continue to call these blends aromatics. That being said, this is not your typical American style aromatic! This has everything that those blends lack, this is a diamond that wants to stay coal. The constituent tobaccos that make up this blend are totally unique as are the flavors used to enhance the natural flavors. This is perfect for summer! The smoke is rich and cool, I think the Latakia is used not to give a smoky character but to keep the blend as cool smoking as possible. The Kentucky and black cavendish work beautifully together and make for a full bodied smoke. The top note is somewhat of a creamy lemon flavor with a floral finish and it is just magical on the tongue. I am floored! I didn't know what to expect from this and honestly the first few smokes didn't really move me but it is my experience that most good things take time to warm up to. Once this hit me, it hit me hard and it is immensely satisfying! I really wish HU tobaccos were easier to obtain here in the States. This easily made it up there with some of my favorite blends such as Condor, St. Bruno and now even Hadde's Best Irish. This is one to get excited about folks! Highly essential (for people that enjoy traditionally scented tobaccos like myself).

On opening my 50g tin, the fresh, tangy aroma of oranges and spices was released and whetted my tastebuds for the experience to come. It's an almost black-looking blend and, as I sniffed in the tin-note deeply, I thought I could detect more than a hint of Latakia, although I didn't know at that moment that it was part of the recipe.
Despite being very moist, it packed easily into my meerschaum and after a charring light, a slight tamp and one more dance of the flame from my gas lighter across the surface I settled back for over an hour's gentle smoke. The flavour is decidedly English, despite that orangey tin-note, and the Latakia is not overly-prominent but melds well into the overall flavour. A most pleasant blend for the English enthusiasts.
