Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Sweet Rum Pigtail
(4.00)
Manufactured by spinning tobacco dark fired leaves into a rope. The Pig Tail is more widely used as a chewing tobacco although can still be smoked if preferred.
The pouch aroma is both oily and spicy. Due to the tiny diameter of the twist, usually cut into so many little discs in order to chew or smoke.
Once you cut them you see a very deep reddish brown colour, especially under direct light. It is truly a strong tobacco. The taste settles down gradually and becomes increasingly sweet, spicy, and creamy.
Flavored with Rum.

As this is a thinner version of Rum Twist Unsliced Rope, my review is fairly similar with a couple differences. The rope is moist and pliable and easily cut into coins, bits and/or shreds if you prefer. The dark fired and air cured tobaccos are boldly earthy, woody, with a deep tangy dark fruitiness, some tart and tangy citrus, and a minor grass, floral, spice, cigar and acidic notes. The rum topping has a sweetly deep character, and though it does sublimate the power of the tobaccos a little, there's plenty of intrinsic strength for your taste buds. Sports a full taste and a lot of strength. The nic-hit is in the center of medium to full; perhaps a tad more than the thicker version does, as well as a slightly rougher edge at times. No harsh or dull spots, and won’t bite. It requires a little dry time, but no matter how you prepare it (unless you dry it to a crisp, which I do not recommend), it burns slow and clean with a consistently bold, mildly sweet and rugged flavor to the finish. It leaves some moisture in the bowl, and only leaves dottle for a wet smoker. If you leave it fairly moist, you will need to stir up the tobacco a time or two. The after taste pleasantly lingers, but the room note is stronger. Not an all day smoke.

Gawith Hoggarth - Sweet Rum Pigtail.
Although the twist leans more toward the thinner side, I still use my coffee grinder once I've sliced it into coins, it's quite firm! Possibly because it's not too thick, it isn't full of water, so let's talk smoking:
I really enjoy it, even though I tend to steer clear of blends strong with nicotine, the flavour redeems it. There's only a slight touch of the rum, enough to liven it up, but the rest is a rich tobacco taste. It burns exceptionally well, but I guess that's got a lot to do with preparation; like I said, I use a grinder. The temperature of the smoke's cool, and I get no bite.
I quite like the room-note, although it's nothing great, and like I said: the nicotine's strong!
For stars for flavour!
Highly recommended.

This comes in two sizes of rope, narrow guage and medium; this note is from a medium sample. The N is strong, but it doesn't seem quite as strong as the GH ropes made primarily for smoking. The smoke seems a bit rougher than regular GH ropes, but is still pleasant and very smokable. The rum is present, and adds to the complexity, as the underlying tobacco is very straight forward. The rope is easy to cut up with scissors and then to rub out. Fans of other GH ropes should give it a try. I found it a slightly more enjoyable smoke than the Sweet Coffee version of the same pigtail.
