I’ve compared this to the original Dunhill Elizabethan Murray’s version (which once was a regular smoke for me) and I'd say this blend is fairly close, but not an exact match. It’s certainly closer than the current DE production by Dunhill, which I consider to be inferior to both the original and the Sutliff Match. The Murray’s version was a little more complex in taste, and had just a little more bright lemon Virginia. The raisiny, earthy, woody perique is very peppery in both, slightly more plumy here. The brown Virginia is virtually identical: a little grass, some wood, earth, tart and tangy citrus, bread, tangy dark fruit, and light sugar. As much as I liked the Murray’s product, I would say this is as close as you can get. A little more sprinkling of citrusy, spicy, floral lemon Va., and it’d virtually be the same. Because the new version is different from the Murray’s, which is what the Match attempted to copy, I would not consider them to be similar. The proportion of ingredients in the new Dunhill version is different, and is a shag cut, which the original never was. Nor is this Match, which is ribbon cut.

The nic-hit here is just shy of medium, which is a tad less than the Murray’s version. The strength level is medium, while the Murray’s was a couple steps stronger. The taste level is a little past medium, and almost the same as the original. No chance of bite or harshness is present. Burns cool and clean at a moderate pace with a very consistent flavor. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pleasant, slightly lingering after taste, and stronger room note. Can be an all day smoke for the veteran and repeatable for the less experienced.

The Murray’s version of DE was one of the very few blends m'lady openly complained about. When they quit making it, she was very happy. A couple of years back, I tried the Match for the first time. Five minutes after I started smoking it, she came back to the studio and said, "Are you smoking that crap again? I thought they quit making it." Telling me that she recognized the smell after several years just struck me kinda funny. That, besides the taste, amplified my assessment that the Match is close indeed. I gave the Murray's version four stars. Couldn't do that for the new release, which is a two star blend. This gets four stars.

I have either never had the original or it was bowl or two from friends 30 years ago. I am not comparing this to my memory or my imagination.

I found this to be a solid VaPer. The Virginias are both bright and dark, and provide an excellent foundation. They are slightly heavy and full with just a little citrus and hay. The perique is a solid presence that does not overpower. It is peppery when puffed and some plum is there when sipped. I did not taste any topping.

I liked this, and I could see smoking a lot of it. It is not one of those tobaccos that wows you or has you marveling at complexity. If you are looking for a "full" VaPer that satisfies, this one is a solid 3+.

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Match Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture.

The mixture's quite coarsely cut, there's a few sizeable leaf like pieces. The majority of the blend looks medium brown, but there are one or two jet black specks mixed in. The smell from the loose pouch is pure and uncased.

The smoke tastes FABULOUS. I get lots more Perique than Virginia; it may be a bit too much for some. There's lots of 'dark' Perique subtleties: it's plummy, figgy, and rich, with an equal measure of spice. I don't get much of the Virginia, I can't really identify much grass/citrus from it; I often struggle picking up on Va traits in heavier tasting blends, though. The temperature of the smoke's relatively low, and it burns superbly.

I get a decent hit of nicotine from this, and unlike my fellow reviewers to date I don't find the room-note too bad!

An easy one to rate:

Highly recommended.

Very tangy and citrusy; the bright virginias play a big part in it. The perique isn't peppery, or not enough to be noticeable, but gives a sweet plum flavour. It is a very sweet tobacco. I would probably suggest it to someone who smokes aros and wants to try out virginias and Va/Per. Not an overly complex smoke, but an enjoyable all-day smoke for certain.

Is a blend of Virginia with Perique. During smoking, the Perique is easily scented, peppery, very peppery. After a few minutes, you may note the Virginia. Is a decent Virginia-Perique. No complexity. The components easily separated If you enjoy a mixture not complex, when the Virginia and the Perique can be easily noted, try this.

A bulk, dark brown, ribbon cut tobacco that smells chocolaty. The Virginia flavors are on the hay and earthy side, the Perique is more peppery than pruny.

It's a fuller and more interesting version than the Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture by Scandinavian Tobacco Group. Burns nicely, doesn't bite and is even mellow and creamy. It also leaves a cigar like aftertaste. I like to have it as an evening smoke since the nicotine level hits the spot for me. A classy smoke available in bulk, what's not to like?

I’ve never smoked Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture so I’m reviewing Sutliff Match Elizabethan Mixture for what it is rather than for whether it tastes like the original or not. In a nutshell, I like it a lot.

I’m a VaPer lover and, IMO, SMEM is a great VaPer. Both the Virginias and the Perique are top notch. While the Virginias and the Perique are nicely balanced, the Perique is the star of the show. In my experience, Perique can be either mostly spicy or mostly raisenee (to coin an adjective). The Perique in SMEM falls into the second category and is absolutely delicious — sweet and fruity. The Virginias in SMEM are rich and toasty.

As delivered, the tobacco is a bit on the moist side, and so benfits from a short airing out. It lights easily and burns to a dark ash. The Perique is the first thing one tastes, with the Virginias becoming more flavorful by mid-bowl. Given that the Perique is not especially spicy, the tobacco is easy to retro-hale, which is the best way to experience the full flavor of the blend. Another nice thing about SMEM is that is doesn’t bite even if smoked fast, something that isn't true about a lot of VaPers.

If you like VaPers, I strongly suggest you try it.

I totally agree with JimInks' review.

I think this is not a match to current Scandinavian Tobacco Group shag version but a match to older ones which received high reputation.

Tin note: a little bit plum; mostly are woody and sour.

When smoke: smooth citrus, earthy, woody and peppery.

Three an a half stars.

This is the first VaPer I've purchased in bulk. First, out of the pound that I purchased, I left enough for about a dozen or so bowls out, and put the rest into canning jars. I'm going to stove half and the other half I will just get warm enough to seal the jars. I've seen people covering the jars with foil to allow for air expansion when stoving, but as somebody who uses them for pressure canning, I can assure you that you don't need to. Just leave the band loose enough to let air escape, but even that's not strictly necessary. But I digress.

In the briar, it was very good, but it seemed a bit more bitey than the English blends I normally smoke. It was slightly lemony with a little bit of spice. Very good. I was happy. If I wasn't planning on updating this review when stoving and aging has occurred, I'd give it a solid three stars. But I've read enough about this one to believe it will get much better with age.

In the cob, it was sublime. Even without age, this tobacco is matched very well with a cob. I don't know how to describe it. Out of a MM cob, it is a solid four stars.

The bowl I smoked out of the meerschaum was packed hamfisted by me, so it burned hot for about the first quarter of the bowl or so. Once that calmed down, the lemony-spice flavor came through like a champ. It's not as good as the cob, but it is excellent. I'd be torn between three and four stars.

Given those three bowl, I am torn between recommended and highly recommended as a rating. Given that it was ~$35 for a pound once shipping was added in, I'll say that at that price, it's highly recommended. I'd give it three stars at $60/lb. But I will update in a couple of weeks with results from stoving, and probably later with aging.

UPDATE: I stoved some and let it sit long enough for moisture, oils, etc... to reabsorb, and cracked open a jar. 195f/90.5C for 5 hours. Results: Magnificent! I think that the other reviews saying it's better after aging are probably spot on. Keep in mind that being at a higher heat not only speeds up chemical reactions, but it also causes other ones to happen that wouldn't otherwise, so stoving will likely produce a different result than aging.

The next pound of pipe tobacco I order will be this. I want to test stoving and aging for months, aging for months, etc... This stuff is hard to NOT smoke!

I too find this to be similar to the older Dunhill Elizabethan, which I used to smoke, but with the following exceptions.

1) This has less nicotine which to me is not a plus. 2) This has a faint sweetness which I feel is something added. I like this quite a bit.

What set the original DE apart were the austere, astringent, yet powerful (with bite potential) and subtle Virginias. That's not what you get here, but then you can't expect Dunhill's signature Virginias to appear in a bulk match blend 20 years after the fact.

Overall, I like it for what it is.

05/16/2020 Update: this blend ages well. I packed it as tight as I can in a jar and let it sit. From the start it's good but give it several months and it better. Better still at a year. Going to up it to 4 stars because it's that good.

This is no match to STG Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture. The cut is wrong, the tobacco and taste is below what STG standards are.

Now on to just reviewing it for a VaPer. Very good blend. Ribbon cut. Nice Virginias, seems to be a blend of Virginia, not sure which ones. Perique is balance nicely with the Virginia. I've never had the Murray's blend but if this is what it was it was a great blend. I feel that this will age nicely. Oh! And a good plus is inexpensive. Will be getting more to cellar.

I've never had the Murrays version of Elizabethan Mixture and probably never will but I'm my opinion I dont think this should have even been called a match. This is a Sutliff product, not a Dunhill. Outside of one or two blends, I dont like Sutliff.

The bag aroma started of like a artificial chocolate topping with some PG like sweetness and vinegar. No tobacco smell at all. Very consistent flavor from beginning to end that is very artificially sweet with a cheap tobacco general flavor. Cant pick up on perique hardly at all. Burns cool and clean with a small amount of bite.

It's just not good to me. Its tastes nothing like a vapor, it's not fulfilling. It's just Sutliff. Very few things from them I even like. Even things that I reviewed as highly recommended I dont even like now. The main exception is Hearth and Home Marble Kake. It tastes nothing like Sutliff. I cant even finish my sample so in the trash it went.

I had bought this back in March of this year along with the Match 965, EMP, and Nightcap. I happened to see it in my ‘cellar’ and decided this would be what I was going to have this evening. I tried some when I first bought it and even wrote some notes down but nothing different than what I am going to say. This is to me a rough cut and has a very sweet smell to the tin (jar) but not of an aromatic nature. This is a very smooth smoke and has a nice spiciness to it which may be from the Perique. I am guessing some of the components are of the red Virginia leaf but that is just an educated guess and not to be taken as gospel. It has been a long time since I have had the Elizabethan and am not even going to attempt to compare the two. I will say the more I smoked this the better it got. I used a pipe that was one of my first that I bought back in the late 90s from a guy who had a tobacco and cigar shop in Carlsbad, CA. It is a Butz Choquin Calabash 2000. This was around the time that Carl Reiner had that First Five Proposition that added an extra 50 cents tax per pack of cigarettes for the children. Anyway I am getting way off point but from what he told me and not sure if it was connected to this particular tax he had only been in business not even a year and was required to pay additional tobacco taxes on his inventory and could not afford it and decided to close the doors. Every time I smoke this pipe, I think about the fun time I had stopping by there and when I bought one of my first pipes and really sad to see this man’s dream of owning his own Cigar and Pipe store not reach fruition.

I bought this tobacco without any expectations. I was positively surprised. Upon coming to this page, I discovered that this tobacco is a version of an old Dunhil blend - which I have never tasted. Therefore, I will limit myself to reviewing some points about this tobacco without relating it to the Dunhil version.

Pure and natural tobacco, does not appear to have any casing. It has no flavoring. The flavor comes all from the tobacco leaves. I feel certain notes of lemon, sometimes a sweet orange, but it's very discreet. Sometimes I even think that there is some oriental in this mix. Virgos are sweet and smooth, most likely they are stoved virginia. The Room note is more discreet than other VaPers, being very pleasant for those who smoke. Slow, perfect burn (no tobacco left at the bottom of the bowl), requiring very few relights. The smoke flavor evolves from spicy to sweet. very pleasant. Highly recommended for VaPer and Virginia fans. Great entry-level VaPer for those who want to know this type of blend.

I’ll be brief here as much has already been said about this now labeled as Sutliff Victoria blend. I mostly smoke Burley blends but I do enjoy VaPers and tend to binge a bit once I get started. This is a good mellow well rounded blend. Actually I love it. What I’m smoking at the moment has been cellared for ten months now and the tobaccos are well married. It aged quite well, however, I enjoyed it new but ran out of what I kept to smoke at the beginning. I believe I bought two pounds after first tried a sample and it has turned out to be a good decision. I also bought two pounds of the Sutliff Mature Red Virginia which I believe to be an excellent VA, at least for my taste. These are great relief pitchers for when my Codger blends begin to leave me a bit flat. Give it a try; you just might love it

First impression: this smokes like an aromatic, and it's moist like one. I'm not getting any perique. Mostly I taste sweet fruitiness, I think. We'll see what later smokes are like. If the perique doesn't come through I will be disappointed.

Several bowls later: This has definitely grown on me. I can't compare it to Murray's Elizabethan Mixture, which I've never had, and I've not smoked it side by side with Peterson's (Dunhill's) version from STG. I'm still not noticing the perique, but I do like the figgy taste. I am enjoying this and could easily order some more. While it was too moist out of the bag, it dried out nicely, which tells me this is not an aromatic, as I first thought. All in all, a nice and inexpensive blend that I can see smoking, if not all day, then several times a day. Since I smoke outside, I cannot judge the room note. The nic hit is on the mild side, but it is there though much less than STG's EM.

I’m smoking this back to back with the Dunhill Elizabethan from the newer Danish maker (purchased in 2011).

This mixture is coarse cut with some whole yellow leaves in it, while the DE is ribbon-cut.

While I find that version of DE sweet, fruity, bright and Virginia-forward, this Sutliff match is full, tangy, rounded, mature, and has a more generous helping of Perique.

I can taste the fermented, spicy, "machine oil" flavor of Perique in every puff, while it was quite subdued in the DE.

This smokes cool and doesn’t bite, though it tends to tingle my tongue; Perique tends to do that to me.

It also has a stronger nicotine presence than the DE.

It is complex and spicy, and the VA leaf is more subdued in this one.

I’m not sure this blend is for me, but lovers of strong Perique will certainly like this blend.

A disappointing blend considering all the great reviews. Having never smoked the Murray’s version, I can’t make comparisons, but I can say that it is quite lackluster.

When I first received the blend, it had such a weird smell to it. I received 8oz in a bag from 4noggins. When I opened the box up, I smelled what seemed to be Autumn Evening, which was odd considering there wasn’t a single aromatic blend in my order. Upon opening the bag of this tobacco, there was a strong cavendish and maple aroma coming from it, along with some vinegar, grass, citrus, and perique in the background. This blend was clearly where that maple smell was coming from. This struck me as strange considering this is supposed to be a simple VA/Per. I smoked a bowl to make sure this was in fact what I ordered. What I got was a flavorless, harsh smoke. It was one of the few bowls of tobacco I’ve had that I actually consider “bad”. It would have been a one star on this site if I had reviewed it then. After dumping the bowl, I went inside and put the rest in a mason jar.

Flash forward 7 months to now. Opening the jar, I get a strong whiff of vinegar, some earthiness, citrus, spice, and, unfortunately, still some of that cavendish and maple smell, though reduced from when it was fresh. Normally, these smells (besides the maple cavendish) would indicate a good tasting VAPer, but that wasn’t really the case.

Upon lighting, the first few puffs are kinda harsh. Not as harsh as the fresh bowl I smoked, but definitely not smooth. Hot air, ash, and spice. Once it settles down, I start getting some (keyword here is SOME) flavor. Overall, the profile is tart, grassy, bittersweet, woodsy, with a slight spice, and yes, some of that weird maple cavendish flavor in the background still, especially on the retrohale. However, the overall flavor is extremely low. Those flavors I described are wisps, ghosts, specters. They don’t last but for a split second, and they’re very muted. While not “bad” like that fresh bowl I had, this isn’t exactly good either. The nicotine strength is pretty low from what I can tell. One positive I’ll say is that it packs well and stays lit.

I love the modern Elizabethan. It’s my favorite VA/Per, and the one I come back to time and time again no matter how many other VA/Pers I try. If this match is how the Murray’s version tasted (which I don’t think is the case if my suspicions are correct), I’m happy STG picked up the manufacturing. This doesn’t even taste like a VA/Per. So, I think I may purchase some more of this in the near future. I think I got a bad batch, or possibly a different blend. Could it be something with the way 4noggins had it stored? Could I have gotten some type of new recipe for this match? The more I smoke it and the more I read reviews, the more I think it’s possible that this isn’t the correct blend or a bad batch. Like I said, it’s not “bad”, which is what I’ll reserve 1-star ratings for. The 7 months in the jar did improve it some, though the flavor is minuscule, so maybe another 7 months will improve it further. I really do want to purchase 2oz of this again, maybe from a different site just to rule that out, and review it. I’m about 80% sure what I received isn’t representative of what it’s supposed to be. I’m giving it 2 stars.

UPDATE 12/23/22 Well, I ordered 2 more ounces of this blend. Very interesting. It’s like all the good qualities of the original batch I got minus the bad. It actually tastes like a VAPer! No more of that maple aroma. I’m guessing my original batch was accidentally mixed with some type of aromatic or possibly stored among aromatics which eventually tainted the flavor. Whatever the case, if this is a true representation of the Elizabethan Match, it is a solid VAPer. Still not as good as the modern Elizabethan which, in my opinion, is a bit more tart, bready, and spicy and a bit less sweet, and not as good as other favorite VAPers of mine, but it is solid. Considering the bulk price of the match, it would be worth if you smoke a lot of VAPers or if you want to cellar a few pounds of it. I’m upgrading it to 3 stars.

Ah...A lemon cello vinaigrette kind of smoke. Citrusy, tart, sweet and slightly peppery. Smooth and easy on the pallet. Straight and forward yet unique vapor. I don't smoke much of this blend but it calls to me every now and then. Quality tobacco and makes me think of old world.

I have not yet sampled the current Peterson version of Elizabethan Mixture, nor Murray's, but I feel this tobacco is best judged on its own merits, rather than comparatively. Tin (bag) note is of raisins, very pleasant. Charring light brought forward the perique, whereas the true light brought the virginias into play. It's bready, slightly sweet, slightly sour and tangy, and ever so slightly peppery on the retrohale. No bite, and smokes cool. Personally I found this combination to be simple but delicious, as I'm quite partial to this standard fare for VAPers. Perfect for a sunny afternoon. The price point, as well, is unbeatable, and I'll be ordering plenty more to jar up quite soon. I'm in agreement with many of the reviewers here that this is a great four star blend.

Match Elizabethan

Perique is strong with this one. Almost offensive in the retrohale and lingers in the nostrils afterward. Which is up to the smokers preference to decide whether that good or bad.

The VAs are muted out by the perique but when they do come through they’re sweet (and not naturally but topped-sweet to me) I detect a similar topping to Carter Hall based on the bag note: cocoa, rum raisin. Which may just be the perique but it’s slightly chemical and artificial to me.

Anyway, Match Elizabethan Produces a large amount of blue grey smoke and nice white ash.

Maybe an all day VaPer for some. Room note is pleasant and sometimes sweet.

Perique to VA proportions would really work if there were more stoved red Vas or whatever kind of Vas are bready and naturally sweet/thick

On its own it’s kind of harsh... Paired with a ginger ale it’s sublime. Highly recommend pairing.

Weakness: it lacks depth and complexity. The flavor is primarily carried by the Perique. And IMO the Virginia’s should elevate and enhance the perique and vice versa in a VaPer. Not a lot of “conversation” happening between the two components here. Just the Perique yelling at the VA’s while the occasional small voice of the VA’s can be heard.

Strength: Despite its uneven, chunky ribbon cut, this blend burns very well. White ash all the way down and consistent flavor throughout.

Would recommend as a first time VaPer

This is a match to the old Murray's blend of EM, which I never had the pleasure of smoking, so I will compare it to the current blend from Peterson. I find it to have a little more flavor in all area's than the current version. It's a little more figgy/fruity and just slightly more citrusy, with a slightly deeper flavor than the current version of EM, however the nicotine content is less than the current version. All of that being said, I think it is a good tobacco, a little different from the current version, but I highly recommend it. I will give it 3 stars, it would be 4 if it were not for the weak nicotine content. Enjoy!

For starters, let me state that I have never had the pleasure of trying the original Dunhill iteration of Elizabethan Mixture, so this will not be a review of comparison between the original and the match. This review will be based solely on the qualities of the smoking experience.

I have had this one kicking around in a jar for a while. I never purchased this, it came as a free sample somewhere along the way.

The smell of the tobacco is what you would expect of a Vaper blend. Dark fruits, raisony, figgy, and a sharpness from the bright virginia. This is a traditionally cut tobacco, with a mixture of both darks and lights, but mostly a darker looking blend.

It packed well, but took me a fair try to get it lit, which was puzzling for me, as this tobacco was not wet at all, nor does it have a goopy casing to be evident.

Once lit, it performed as one would expect. The perique is very evident upon first light up. It is up front and tangy, good flavors on the palette and a strong tingle in the nose. This tingle would settle down as the bowl progressed. The second half of the bowl produced a lot more dark rounded flavors, as is often the case.

Overall, a decent blend, but nothing to right home about, or buy more of in my opinion. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to celebrate per se. Too many great Vapers out there for me to spend much time with this one.

With a lifetime supply of tobacco cellared in the hall closet, I have no business spending another penny more on the stuff, but ardent holiday spirits moved me to click on this blend, and I'm so glad I did (I suffer no buyer's remorse).

Having never smoked the original Dunhill Elizabethan Murray’s version, I can only review this blend for what it is.

As soon as I opened the box (with the tobacco still tightly wrapped in a plastic bag) I was immediately struck by the most delectable aromas of plum, fig and chocolate -- it was right there.

Based on some of the earlier reviews, I was expecting a perique pepper bomb, but (curiously) that was not at all the case. While the plum, fig and raisins came through from the perique, I found the pepper profile to be mild-to-medium. I had some difficulty discerning any citrus, grass, or anything real tangy from the Virginias (dark fruit is what prevailed throughout). And though this is perique-forward, I found it to be a wonderfully balanced blend (obviously, it would not be the same experience without those Virginias in the background). Burns nicely; burns cool. Wonderful stuff this is.

Bulk. Arrived moist, lots of dry time needed for my taste. Aroma of vinegar and some spicy perique. Rough cut with some large chunks and some springy ribbon. I break the large pieces up before packing. This blend takes the flame well and stays lit easily. Once lit the perique is spicy and figgy. The Virginia's are somewhat sweet and grassy. I get some citrus and some lemony zest if sipped slowly. The flavors stay consistent throughout. The strength is medium and the nicotine is a touch below medium. This could be an all day smoke.

One of my go-to tobaccos. I have never tried the real thing but if it's better then I will definitely be putting it in my rotation. A definitive VaPer, sweet and spicy. If you get too excited it will bite. This is a one-light tobacco and one of my favorites.

I have been smoking quite a bit of this over the last few weeks in a Rattray filtered pipe and my weekly meerschaum. Have moved to only smoking in my dedicated Virginia Rattray filtered pipe as I was getting a bit of tongue bite towards the end of the day with the meerschaum pipe.

This is the first Va/Per I can say I honestly like, in that the Virginia grass/hay is discernible from the Perique. Tin note is vinegar and sour with light fruit poking through, the deeper you inhale the more sour vinegar is present.

Packs easily following pinch and stuff, to thumb loads to palm spirals, I have found that the lighter I pack this though the better the smoke flavors can develop down the bowl.

Earthy Virginia starts the smoke with the faintest of fruit. Musty earth is the primary base flavor. But as you change your puffing cadence the grassy hay aspect of the Virginia’s poke through and the Perique shifts from pepper to plum. The shifts are at time subtle but not exclusively, as spots do have soft Perique fruit or strong grass/hay coming to the forefront. The shifts do not last long but I feel the blend gives you the smoker an incredible dynamic range of flavor based on how your cadence shifts over time with the bowl. Which for me, is a different and enjoyable experience as I can shift the smoke taste consciously.

I know when I hit a pocket of Perique as it will tingle your nose but then one can shift to a fruitier Perique flavor by just slowing down on the cadence.

Slightly sweet, slightly sour, musty earth with grass/hay and dark fruit. And this is a bulk blend.

I smoke exclusively outside, so can not comment on room note, but you will need to air out a bit as the tobacco smell can cling to you and result in a musty Virginia scent following you around. The finish is short, which is unfortunate and the after smell is enjoyable to me but I have received disapproving frowns from the Mrs.

This will be part of my rotation with GH Scotch Flake and a nice break from my Kendal Flake. I find that through a filtered pipe I can smoke 5 to 6 bowls a day but in my meerschaum 2 is the max before the bite starts to kick in.

When I read the rating it tells me "somewhat" recommend, which sounds about right. It may only give it a couple stars though which I think its better than that, I just only "somewhat'" recommend the stuff.

I've only had the current Dunhill Elizabethan. It kind of resembles that blend at times. It's a fairly light VA/Per and resembles it to a degree, but its also different.

The Dunhill Elizabethan I enjoy is kind of citrusy/grassy in the Virginia realm of its flavor with a dousing of tasty perique. Compared to many of the VA/PER blends I've tried, not many have the high end where Elizabethan does.

This one doesn't quite get there at the high end. It's clearly different Virginia tobacco with some of its own nuances. It doesn't quite go into Red or dark flavored Virginia at all, so it keeps itself from being that type of VA/PER.

If there's a range of Virginia taste from high to low end, I'd put Elizabethan at the high end, and this one at mid-high, but never grassy citrusy high. Maybe only slightly grassy with some other mid type flavor not prominent in the current Elizabethan blend. This mid high flavor I taste quite prominent and if its in the current Elizabethan mixture by Dunhill, its a background player, not at the forefront like in this blend.

Like other Sutliff blends, it has a very slight, really slight, mustiness to it, maybe attributed to an older, or lower grade of tobacco than in most modern tinned blends.

It's basically an Elizabethan blend with lower grade of tobacco, maybe. Maybe not, and its just Sutliff's flavor, I can't quite say as I'm no tobacco expert.

It might be good enough to have on hand if you really just need a cheaper alternative to Elizabethan in bulk. It's not bad by any means and is quite smokeable, but calling it a complete match isn't accurate to this modern Dunhill rendition.

It may taste more like the Murray's version I've never tried. I bought 8 ounces of the stuff and was somewhat disappointed in the first bowl I smoked through a cobb. I've given it more of a chance in some of my favorite briar pipe's and have to say its growing a bit more on me the more I smoke it.

I do love the Elizabethan profile and this has it maybe more than other va/per's out there, so on that alone, its pretty good. If you love elizabethan just that much more than everything else and want a variation of it, this could be a top choice, but don't expect an identical copy to the current version.

This is a good utility VaPer if you like them. I have ordered it a few times, I recently ordered a whole pound to be jarred up because I want to try it with some age but I keep smoking my supply before a couple months. Its not the best VaPer, but it definitely scratches the itch well. Always on hand.
