Paul Olsen Summer Flake
(3.00)
A flake with matured and dark Virginia. The pure Virginia is combined with a bit of perique and cavendish. The tobacco is then flavored with Caribbean rum, vanilla and seasonal fruit. A good variation to your normal flake tobaccos and not as sweet and aromatic as it sounds.

I added this blend a long time ago when I returned from a Scandinavian cruise, which luckily enough, had Copenhagen as its primary port. Before leaving I had done the research and had one objective in mind while in Copenhagen. Find the Danish Pipe Shop. This I did and, when inside, gave my objective to them. Find me things I can't find in America.
Well, to buy everything I couldn't easily find in America would break the bank. Particularly, through the line of Paul Olsen, which reminded me of C& D with all the available blends. After sniffing a few, I settled on this blend. It is a variation on the VaPer and the aromatic. Rather, it is an aromatic VaPer.
The Virginia and Perique are complimented with some Cavendish. Not the black gooey stuff we are used to seeing in the US, this one is more in the European tradition of Aromatics. Mostly Virginia in composition and potentially bitey if you aren't paying attention. The perique is very light offering little in spice. Think PS LNF amount of perique.
The topping is strawberry and rum and, true to its name, it made for a wonderful warm weather treat; however, I don't think it translated into a great room note. On this trip I was often accompanied by my brother and sis in law who are cigarette smokers, so I never was able to get an objective rating on the room note.
This trip took place in 2012 and I would guess this is when I added it in anticipation of finishing the tin (most of which was smoked on the trip) soon. As things tend to happen the small amount remaining got buried and forgotten about. It wasn't until recently that resolved to finish it. This brings me to the leaf and how it fared over time.
First off, like all these MOB blends, this came in a 100g paint can type tin. This did well to preserve the tobacco, which never got dry over this time. The topping did not fair so well as it seemed to slowly flash to having very little essence left. What this left behind was still a fantastic VaPer.
I am leaving this at three stars as it is good, but the fact that this did get buried for so long is probably enough to show that this should not merit a four star rating. If you are interested in an aromatic VaPer, then I do recommend this one as it will allow the base tobaccos to come through the topping. The topping is pleasant and takes the base flavors in a slightly different direction without overwhelming the same.
