HU Tobacco JU 52

(3.33)
If you have ever heard the powerful boom of the BMW engines and seen the massive and yet majestic shape of a Ju52 (Auntie Ju) circling in the sunlight, surely you have felt an immediate fascination with this giant of the skies. Massive, powerful, majestic, yet playful and even a little naïve, but always impressive – this is how the “Ju 52“ blend, too, will present itself to you. Malty and slightly fruity tones give the powerful, dark pressed, medium-strong Virginia/Perique Broken Flake its character. A voluminous smoking experience in terms of taste, but without irksome weight. A gentle giant for dreams of the pioneering spirit of the past. "…takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory." (aviation aphorism)

When I saw the name of this tobacco, I told myself that I absolutely had to try it! I think we've all seen pictures of this aircraft and the first things that come to mind are the airlift at Stalingrad, the invasion of Crete .. . Ju 52 is an excellent allday tobacco, it seems light, but it is not that much. it develops dense plumes of white smoke spiraling: really seems to be among the clouds. I'm not a big fan of aromatics, but I've never tasted anything like this:it has a certain body, a slight natural sweetness that is combined with a nutty flavor. Extremely pleasant,an easy smoke for the morning.I've loaded into the pipe with the Frank method and he was burned down without problems. An easy playful smoke and an easy buy!

The dark pressed Virginia is very earthy, woody, deeply dark stewed fruit sweet, and is the major tobacco component. The Kentucky is fairly earthy, woody, smoky, and a little floral, nutty sweet as a secondary player. The perique has a mild spiciness with raisin, date, plum and fig overtones, adding a little complexity in its back up status. The floral essences as well as the lightly applied, rich raspberry are obvious in every puff, but they do not sublimate the tobaccos so much as they compliment them to form a well balanced medium strength, medium tasting aromatic. A broken flake mixture that burns fairly easily and cool at a moderate pace with a consistent flavor to the finish. It doesn’t take that many relights to burn it to ash, and leaves just a little moisture in the bowl. No bite, no dull or hot spots. The nic-hit is just above being mild. The room note is fairly pleasant, and so is the after taste. Three and a half stars.

An aromatic from Hans Wiedemann for those who, like myself, normally don't do aromatics. I say this because the base of this blend, a medium strong vaper ready rubbed together with some Kentucky could easily stand on its own, without any added flavouring. And this of course is the way it should be: make a fine tobacco blend, only then enhance it with an appropriate flavour. This is what Hans has done with JU 52 and it pays off handsomely: one gets all the tobacco flavour of the very fine tobacco ingredients with a subtle fruity topnote to turn it into an (semi?) aromatic. Smokes dry and cool, has a nice bite from Perique, body from the Virginia and Kentucky fired leaf and a very agreeable flavour from the mild casing. A delicious tobacco!

The JU52 was a German transport plane , actually the Junkers 52 , used in the Nazi era . A powerful air craft , capable of transporting many troops to a combat area , it has now delivered a powerful punch to one of my GBD pipes . A virginia- perique broken flake , on the dark side , it commands much attention upon opening . Make no mistake , this is strong smoke with musty topping that invades the smoke and makes it over bearing . I doubt that I will ever get it out of the poor GBD that I smoked it in . On the positive side , the tobacco is a good quality and , beyond the topping , lies a decent blend . I have enjoyed several HU aromatics , though I am not an aromatic smoker . Usually , HU is able to incorpotate the aromatic agent without really altering disturbing the qualities of the tobacco but …… not this time .

In the tin, JU-52 let me know right away that I was in for an entirely different type of aromatic. The scent is wonderful and the broken flake appears to be comprised of very high quality tobaccos. The flavor is very rich and has a wonderful depth for an aromatic. The steamed fruit flavors remind me of homemade raspberry jam. The floral flavor for me is more in a support role. The combination of the component tobaccos is perfectly done with the Perique really enhancing the fruit flavor. Unlike some EU made flakes that are lightly flavored, JU-52’s added flavors definitely push this well into the aromatic realm for me personally, but this is so well done that I think many non-aromatic smokers will enjoy this as a change of pace. Lovers of aromatics IMO should have this blend on their “must try” list. There’s no bite and no bitterness as the bowl progresses. The only change that I detect is that the flavor of the Kentucky comes through a little more in the latter half of each bowl. It also adds some additional body and strength to the blend. For the best result, I would recommend smoking this out of a cob or a pipe that hasn’t been used for heavy “traditional” aromatics. Having smoked this fresh out of the tin and aged more than four years, JU-52 is one of the only aromatics that I can recall that improves with age. For my personal taste, JU-52 is among the finer aromatics that I have smoked.

As discussed below; gentle, even-burning, wonderful billowy clouds of smoke, and no bite at all. Lovely - slow and lumbering, just like Auntie Ju.

Hans is a pleasure to deal with.
