HU Tobacco Olaf's Favourite English

Olaf’s Favourite English. For pipe artist Olaf, I had to create a nice and strong English mixture, as he prefers more solid blends for his cozy smoking den. Olaf says I am spot on with this blend after classic fashion. In addition to a sweet Virginia basis, Olaf‘s Favourite English contains 50 percent Cyprian Latakia, Perique as well as a good bit of Smyrna Oriental, Darkfired Leaf and English Black Cavendish. A blend in the spirit of traditional tobacco making, its individual components matched delicately and with love.

Fifty percent of this blend is smoky, woody, earthy, musty sweet Cyprian Latakia. The woody, dry, buttery creamy sweet, spicy, earthy, very floral Smyrna is a secondary player. The spice from the perique is more obvious than the raisins and plum, and plays just below the level of the Smyrna. The woody, dry and slightly sweet, rather spicy, smoky, floral dark fired leaf has an important presence. The tangy dark fruity, earthy, woody, lightly tart citrusy and grassy Virginias are condiments at best. The unsweetened, toasty, sugary black cavendish adds a little smoothness in the background. The strength is just shy of being strong, and the taste is certainly filling. The nic-hit is just past the medium threshold. Won’t bite or get harsh. This is a well balanced, moderately complex lat-bomb with a little nuance, which is a rarity for strong Latakia dominant blends. Burns cool and clean at a moderate pace with a succulently rich and deep savory, spicy and lightly sweet campfire flavor that also evidences itself in the pleasantly lingering after taste. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Has a pungent room note. It’s not an all day smoke, and isn’t for the timid. I recommend a small bowl for this one.

This is a wonderful, creamy and somewhat toasty and roasted flavoured blend to me, that I quickly grew to like a lot! Even though having such a high amount of Latakia, this is far from being a Latakia-Bomb - yet to be honest... almost all of Hans' blends with Latakia are from 40-60% Latakian, and I'd consider none of them to be "Lat-Bombs".. somehow he manages to blend the tobaccos in a way, that the Latakia is dominating, yet not drowning the other ingridients.

Olaf's unburnt scent is roasty, toasty, smoky and spicy and sweet. Easy to handle ribbon-cut and the soothing taste make it a wonderful All-Day English if you wish so, although I find it to have some decent "oomph" and I'd rate the strength as Medium+, almost "medium to strong"!

In the pipe this blend is incredibly smooth and creamy! The Latakia is very silky, and its pleasant smokiness is supported and enriched by the dark fired leaf to create a genuine smokiness. Decently spicy and balanced out with creamy, buttery and sweet notes. Slightly herbal and ethereal, as well als decently woodsy and earthy. Deep, complex taste-profile with toasty an roasted notes, in which you can "dive in" to or simply enjoy it without concentrating on it too much.

Pretty damn delicious, full of its own charme and character and easily a 4-star blend, of which I wouldn't be surprised of it growing to be a favorite of mine.

For lovers of a strong flavoured Latakia mixture that is beefed up by Perique (my guess is that "Cyprian" here is a typo) and other darkfired leaf, this is sure to deliver. An excellent English mixture in the tradition of Dunhill's Nightcap, but smokier, saltier.

Olaf's is a powerhouse Latakia blend. The cut of the tobacco reminds me of the Murray's version of Nightcap. Although the blend could be compared to Nightcap, the perique in Olaf's offers more of a “pepper” quality verses the perique in Nightcap where it adds a “fruity” note. Latakia is the main player in this well made blend, but the presence of the other tobaccos show themselves well in a supporting role. There is a very slight sweetness to the blend too. The very first thing I noticed is the very high quality of leaf used in the blend. The pouch scent is of smoke and leather. The strength starts out as medium, but quickly moves to strong, however, it isn't overpowering. Lovers of full English blends will enjoy this complex English blend. I find Olaf's to share a lot of flavors in common with GL Pease's Lagonda. Those that aren't fans of Latakia forward blends, be forewarned, this blend most likely won't be for you. Those that fall into that category need not review it as a “Latakia bomb” as it would be an injustice to those that enjoy a heavy dose of Latakia in a blend that also offers complex flavors. Highly Recommended!
