Owl Shop Mr. Green's
(3.67)
Mr. Green's Special Mixture was specially prepared for Mr. Arthur Green of New Haven, Conn. in 1937. Old formulas of fine blends have been combined with the utmost care to make this mixture a blend of rare tobacco with a rich, mellow tobacco fragrance, that would be unique, pleasing and desirable.

A great blend. I bought this about a month ago, tried it and wasn't impressed. Now, after smoking it after it sat for a while I recognize all the subtleties in this tobacco. This is something to sit and relax with.

In 1937, eleven years before I was born, The Owl Shop, a stone's throw from Yale Univrsity in New Haven, Conn. developed a special mixture for Mr. Arthur Green. Believe it or not, it still survives intact today, although may only be purchased from the Owl Shop in Worchester, Mass. It is every damn thing good about natural pipe tobacco. Woodsy, smooth as glass, burns to a very fine white-brown ash, and has a complexity of burley (base), virginias and orientals that never tires. There is also the most intriguing and pleasing top note that I have never been able to place. And no--none!--crappy black cavendish or syrups to spoil anything. In the 1960's I studied philosophy with the great Professor George M. Schurr who got his Ph.D. at Yale. Three times a week we met in his office and closely read the greats: Plato, Aristotle, Wittgenstein. He would alternately indulge his palatte with Mr. Green's and W.B.'s Number 3, its softer cousin, in the finest briars and meerschaums. By the end of the hour, the atmosphere was ethereal. In all the decades since, I have never discovered a blend even approaching this quality and enjoyment. You can make it happen, right now. Be my guest.

This is a very nice full flavored blend; rich, creamy light sweetness with some nice spice notes and just a bit of "tang" now and again. I could be wrong, but I do believe there is also a bit of Latakia present that contributes the "woodsy" element another reviewer mentioned. Burns nicely; never wet. I will surely buy more as this makes a GREAT all day blend.
