All natural tobacco made from Brasil, mature Java and Rio Grande tobaccos. Together with 12 other kinds of tobacco selected by taste and smell it will give the smoker a round and balanced smoke without any aromatic substances.
This Tobacco has to be puffed cautipously not to start burning your tongue. It then provides you with a mild and sweet chocolate and nut taste which is most pleasant. This "baai' Dutch recipe Tobacco is realy the kind of Tobacco you could smoke all day long. Use preferably a large bowl pipe.
A very nice and mild virginia based tobacco, out of the package it has a smell of plums. I smoke it every day. If anyone ever has the chance to buy it they should, because this is the perfect tobacco for people who enjoy aromatic tobaccos and want to transition to more natural tobaccos and english blends.
Pipe Used: mostly Big Ben pipes
Age When Smoked: new
Purchased From: Jan Mees (s'Hertogenbosch) and Tobacconist (Schijndel)
On a day trip to the Netherlands, I bought a pouch of this blend. Opening the pouch, a waft of typical VA scent greeted me. The leaf is a wad of extremely long, thin ribbon, though not a Shag cut as some have noted.
Getting some of the leaf untangled, I find about half bright and half medium brown strands in there, and the pouch aroma expands a little to include some spice. From my previous experience with Dutch pipe tobacco, I will wager that that is from the Java included in the blend. The "Rio Grande" leaf mentioned on the pouch probably is actually a Virginia grown somewhere near the river.
Stuffing, if you are used to long-cut 'baccy, is pretty normal. The note on the pouch that one should use "larger bowls" I take to mean "larger than a Shag pipe;" a really large bowl would probably go on to glow cherry red if smoked with this blend in it. As the previous reviewers have noted, this stuff tends to burn fast and hot if you let it: keep it tamped down properly to avoid that.
The flavour is mostly VA sweetness, some oriental spice and that extra note from the Java. For those who don't know the flavour, it is hard to describe; it is a little like Latakia, but less smoky and more spicy. I can't smoke to the bottom in all pipes; you may have to test around a little to find the bowl that goes with Voortrekker. In the right bowls, I have only a few smidgens of dottle left after a bit of a flavour build-up in the final third of the bowlful.
This is not a bad blend at all, but in comparison, I strongly prefer Coopvaert because it has a lot more spice in it, and I can get it in the same places. Over the pouch I tried, I preferred a good glass of Lager to go along with it.
best smoked in a bigger bowl pipe, because of shag cut it can burn somewhat hot if you smoke fast. it has a light sweet tobacco flavor taste. of all the dutch baai-tobacco this one for me is one the best.
