Burley Flake #3 is a blend of cool burning burley and rich, dark fired Kentucky which team up with a bit of fine Virginia for the natural sweetness and welcome fragrance. Lastly, C&D added a dash of perique for additional nuance.

The sweet and sour burleys provide a ton of of earth, wood, nuts, toast, dry sharpness, some spice, slight molasses and cocoa. The dark fired Kentucky offers a burst of spice, floralness, earth, wood, some herbs and vegetation, and nuts as a strong player. The aspects of the Virginia are grass, bread, tart and tangy citrusy sweetness that take the edge off in a condimental role. I think there's more than just a "dash of perique" in this blend. The earthy, woody perique adds a very noticeable spice, plum and raisin hit. It’s a couple of notches above the Virginia. Won’t bite, and has some moderately rough edges. The strength hits the strong threshold, and the taste is full. The nic-hit is just past the center of medium to strong. Burns cool and clean and a little slow, and requires some relights, but the bold, rich flavor remains consistent to the finish. Leaves little moisture in the bowl. Has a lingering after taste, and stronger room note. Obviously not an all day smoke, but the deep taste may cause you to revisit it sometime during your smoking day. I recommend a slow to moderate puffing cadence. It won't hurt to have a little food in your stomach, too.

Several things about this blend jump out at me. First, this is the quickest I've ever gone through a tin of tobacco, to the best of my memory. I got going and could not put this down.

Second, this is indeed a lighter version of Old Joe Krantz, as has been mentioned. It is also OJK's much more refined younger brother. Where OJK blasts full steam ahead without a whit of elegance, BF #3 subdues the harshness of its sibling and provides all the flavor. No asbestos tongue or iron lungs needed.

Finally, I had read about "cigar notes" in pipe tobacco and indeed even made reference to same. I did not know what I was talking about until I smoked this. This takes the medium-full flavor of burleys, virginia and perique and the sum is all that AND the robust smoothness of a fine light wrapper Honduran... not too strong, but with a nice cigar-type boldness. The combination was captivating! I've been excited about a lot of blends over the last couple of years but this is one of the three that I can't say enough good things about (C&D's Epiphany and McC's Royal Cajun Ebony being the other two).

Try this if you enjoy burley with a sprinkling of VA and perique, and if you occasionally enjoy a fine (mild) cigar.

If I was asked to describe this blend in one word that word would be "strong". In every sense of the term. The tin I got was only a few months old but the tin had already started bulging, so my guess is that it would age like a dream. Out of the tin it smells like a pre-hamster hamster cage, like fermented wood chips with a little sweetness. Definitely off-putting to non-smokers and noobs. Packing a bowl of this is easier with the rub method as the flakes sort of disintegrate as I pick them up. The taste takes a big departure from the tin note. You can definitely tell it's a burley blend but the flavors are beefed up. It has a taste like potatoes and marinated steak (in that order). Sounds silly but I'm sticking with it. The vitamin-N will definitely knock you on your behind, but in a small bowl it's easy enough to handle. I normally HATE high vitamin-N blends but this is the exception. It hits you hard about halfway into the bowl but doesn't really increase from that point, so if you can survive the initial hit you're golden. The room note is not a winner because it retains that hamster cage smell, so this is a solitude smoke for sure.

Side note: I wrote this like lightning after smoking a bowl's worth, so if you got thinking work to do this blend will be your friend.

Just finished this tin that had been sitting around for a while. My thoughts on this blend is that it is a bulldozer, which is not a surprise as it is made by C&D and the purpose is to highlight the burley.

This is one thing I do like about C&D blends, they will never let you down in the nicotine department, but this one also has a good amount of perique in it which just puts it over what I can enjoyably tolerate. If you think OJK is too strong, don't even bother with this one, it will knock you out.

As to the taste it is nutty and a little "raisiny" due to the perique, but it will take a very slow cadence to get there. This will turn ashy at the slightest provocation and any rushed smoking will also accelerate the already heavy nicotine in this one. I really didn't like this too much and likely won't buy it again, but will still have to try the other BFs as this is the only one I have had to date. So I somewhat recommend this to the person who just needs a lot of nicotine. As for burley itself, I would prefer Pegasus over this blend as I think it nuttier, still strong, and overall a more pleasurable smoke.

As for the perique element, I would go OJK or haunted bookshop over this blend as they are more forgiving to technique and still strong, but I would rather smoke Hal O' the Wynd to any of them as I feel Perique better suited against a majority of Virginia to Burley on the whole, but we all have our different tastes and some do love this blend. Two stars for me and the quality of leaf that is in all C&D blends.

I have read and been told that C&D knows their burley. This is the first burley flake of theirs that I've tried, and if this is what their burley is like, then the rumors are true. I thought I usually found burley to be pretty boring and sometimes hard to even taste. Not this blend. This has a very robust flavor. It is a beefy tobacco, fully of body, flavor, and nicotine. Normally I'm not a fan of hard hitters in the N department, but this blend is an exception. Much like Jackknife Plug, I have to make sure I've eaten a full meal before I smoke this. But when I have, I can't wait to smoke it. I don't see this tin lasting very long.

If you're new to burleys, or haven't yet tried them, this is a great one to try. There is enough VA and Perique in there to sweeten it slightly. It has just the perfect amount of moisture, in my opinion -- soft to the touch, but not in the least bit moist. The somewhat broken flake falls apart, but I still leave it in thick "stalks", and I have no problem at all keeping this lit. This is actually the easiest to keep lit flake (or broken flake, in this case) tobacco I've smoked.

Cornell & Diehl - Burley Flake #3.

Of the four Cornell & Diehl Burley flakes I've only reviewed #1 to date. Here's my thoughts on #3:

The blend is presented as dark flakes that are beginning to break apart, making for easy filling. The moisture looks good, and it gives off a sharp aroma.

The smoking quality: lighting #3 is easy, and the burn's good. Out of all of the leaves the one I get the most of is the Kentucky. On my first bowl I found it too much, but after a few I began to notice more flavour: an almost sticky, sweet, quality. I find the Perique quite far down in the profile, and the same goes for the Virginia; but even further down. I get no tongue bite from it, and the temperature of #3 is cool.

The smokes build is of a heavy weight, making the room-note bad, and the nic's very strong.

Could I smoke B.F.#3. regularly? No way, far too strong, in flavour and nicotine. But it deserves more than one star, based on quality:

Somewhat recommended.

The tin note is a dark fruit with some earthy tobacco. It smells really good. The "flake" is mostly rubbed out pressed medium ribbon in shades of dark brown and a little tan. It comes a little more moist than most C&D blends. I crumbled it with my fingers into my palm and codger scooped to load. I smoked it as delivered and did not dry it before smoking.

Smoked, this is burley forward as you might guess from the name. I am getting an earthy full taste from the burley. The dark fruit in the tin note comes through slightly in the smoking, and there are a few sweet notes that are the perique/Va contribution. There is a nose tickle which I attribute to the DFK. Mostly this blend is burley goodness.

I found this very good and suited to my tastes. It is only available in a 2 oz tin, and so the price point will mean it is relegated to a treat or change of pace. This is an easy 3. I will get more. If you are a burley fan, you will enjoy this.

Note: This is probably my favorite of the the C&D Burley Flake blends so far. I have not tried #5 yet.

Conclusion: A fantastic smoke; consistent, complex and always a winner. If you are looking for something flavourful and strong this will rock your world.

Taste: Surprisingly floral, if I did not know better I would have thought that it was topped. It is not sweet, though, and the herb-like notes are most likely due to the perique. That same perique plays very well with the burley in adding some heat and spice to the smoke, I would almost compare the experience to having a plate of thai food; there is a burn that stings ones mouth and sinuses initially, but once that initial burn mellows out it reveals a lot of flavour. These flavours include said floral notes, but also a somewhat salty taste from, I suspect, the burley and a tiny sweetness coming off of the virginia. As I said though, this is not a sweet blend, the virginia sweetness is pretty much embedded within the perique. So I would say that the perique is the main player here, it dominates without blocking out the other flavours. One can quickly tell who is in charge, I can't think of a better way to put it, and I have no problems with the boss! This is the best use of perique that I have so far encountered, I like VaPers just as much as the next man but this BurPer brought out something extra from the perique. I have smoked this both rubbed out and "folded" (the flakes come broken so folded means "not rubbed") and I find that the latter makes for a more complex smoke. It also makes for a slow burning, rather long smoke so make sure to have some time to spare. This is a full bodied smoke.

Mechanics: Burns clean and needs very few relights, a dry smoke, no bite and heavy on the nicotine.

I could not put my finger on it but one reviewer said sourdough as the tin note and it's spot on. I've had Kentucky from other companies before and didn't much care for it, but this is different. It doesn't taste or smell like the HH line of dark fired. This has a more natural flavor, although it's still bold. The Virginia proportions are perfect with the burley. This is rich and complicated. Good stuff.

I think people who say they don't like burleys owe it to themselves to try Cornell & Diehl' s Burley Flake series. They have mastered this leaf. #3 is my favorite strictly for my fondness of Perique, because it has plenty of it. BF #3 IMO, is a more smooth and refined version of Old Joe Krantz, making it a more palatable blend to a wider range of smokers. BF #3 gives you a full, nutty flavor with a nice tang from the virginias. The Perique adds the nice plum notes along with plenty of the wonderful pepper sensations. Being burley based, it is a full tobacco blend that will definitely satisfy. Beautiful mottled flakes and a great tin note.

Wow! The tin aroma of this stuff is potent and very complex. The tin says “a dash of Perique” but the ripe cheese and earthy scent of it fills the room when the tin is first opened. Ghostly hints of sweet Virginia and the flat dried-bean, nut-like scent of the Burley play a supporting role to the tasty Perique. Other scents I've picked out in the tin aroma include, cured hay, silage, sour-dough, black tea, mushrooms, damp earth, latex (natural rubber), whole wheat bread, dusty barns, and worn old leather.

Fragile, beautiful flakes, really need little rubbing out. Lights and burns very well.

Smoke has much less complexity on the palate, but it's pleasant. Like over-roasted nuts and notes of cured hay and new-mown grass. Perique flavor is thin and ghostlike. Flavors move through a range of strength from medium to almost non-existent. But remember, this is a mostly Burley flake, so even if the flavor seems mild, there is A LOT of nicotine in this one.

As I smoked more bowls, I noticed a tendency to get cigarette-like near the bowls end. The same ashy cigarette smoke smell dominates the room note, especially a few hours after finishing the pipe. I smoked 3-4 packs a day for twenty years, I finally quit, and I'd rather not taste or smell cigarettes from my pipes.

A full meaty flake. Burley, earthy, smooth, cool, and rich. That's most of what I taste. The burley domninates but is not bitter.

I agree it tastes in flake form somewhat like other full C&D burleys -- OJK and Haunted Bookshop for example. But it is smoother.

Nice flakes, easy to rub out to one's pleasure.

LZ of the tobacco newsletter ranked this 3rd or "mildest" in strength out of the three new flakes by C&D (1, 2, and 3). To me, it ranks 2d or 1st, but still working on no. 1.

A lot of body here, maybe more than Burley Flake by Solani. But latter is more elegant.

Tin note smells of yoghourt – I’ve encountered this once again in Hermit Tobacco’s Captain Earl’s Honor blend where the tin was bulging from fermentation taking place within it – the tin here was not compromised nor was it bulging.

The flakes are thick and short and neatly packed in the tin but they are not very compressed, so that I could not take out whole pieces. They have a density which is something in between a traditional flake and a crumble kake. When rubbed the different layers of leafs untangle easily so if rubbed fully you get to load the pipe with ribbons (..and tobacco dust) after all. They are quite dry and light easily. The tobacco burns evenly and surprisingly very(!) slowly.

I find this tobacco quite similar not only in the tin note, but in taste as well, to Honor Blend though stronger and more complex. It has a cigar taste, it’s not at all sweet, rather savoury, bitter, ashy and spicy (black pepper especially through the nostrils) and has some faint black raisin notes. As you might guess the Perique presence is obvious and strong… Now, this being called “Burley Flake”, I was a little disappointed as I did not get any of the Burley nuttiness just some bitterness. As for the Virginia I could not sense it per se. It is a strong tobacco as I mentioned and has a considerable nicotine content but it has a very smooth – and full – mouthfeel which is somehow a redeeming feature.

It’s not going to be a favourite tobacco of mine, but it’s top quality. It leaves a bitter aftertaste so I do not recommend smoking it after a sweet Virginia based mixture as the bitterness is enhanced and it does not compliment its taste. And although this tobacco is not a cigar-leaf based blend I strongly recommend it to those who do like the cigar taste in their tobaccos and do not mind strong smokes. Room-note is very cigar-like as well. A cautious recommendation from me, as I am not a great fan of cigar-like pipe tobaccos, but this is top class tobacco.

--- This tobacco is too strong for me, not harsh, just strong, but so much that it is not pleasant for me to smoke. What I did was to mix it with some nice English style unflavoured Black Cavendish to tone down it's strength, and now I have a perfectly smokable mixture. It also works well with oriental tobaccos, they add aroma, sweetness and cut the strength while the character of Burley Flake#3 remains. I could actually give it a four stars as a blending tobacco to cut with milder tobaccos.

Another addition to the stout C&D man blends. Earthy, musty, woody and substantially powerful. Loaded with natural tobacco flavor. The blend has some complexity to it and it is balanced and consistent. All of the tobacco varietals can be discerned at some point in every puff. The burley plays a sour walnut note, the dark fired is strong, earthy and cigarish. The Perique is very musty and leathery, occasionally showing a lovely dark fruite note, more savory than sweet. The Virginia offers a bit of mellowing embrace with softer grassy citrus flavors. Notes of cocoa, spice, herbs, and smoked meat flit in and out along with an occasional harshness. It's totally fantastic! The combined impact of the varietals is reminiscent of an oily medium to full bodied cigar. It's robust and has a bold mouth feel. The Burley and Perique double team make a wicked nic hit. It makes for a mean partnership. This is a steak and potato dinner in a seedy night club. True to that analogy, for me BF#3 is best enjoyed as a lovely evening smoke (on a full stomach ofcourse). I recommend a smaller bowled pipe and a glass of scotch. The hard hitting nic can be a real bonus at times.

I don't think it's possible for C&D to even make a bad blend. BF #3 is toasty and nutty with just a hint of sweetness from the Virginias. You had better be a fan of Perique however, because it's there; loud and proud. BF #3 is tasty but just doesn't have that "wow" factor like a Kajun Kake or Mississippi River, but it is very good and worth trying. I won't buy it regularly but I will definitely be buying again.

C&D had open tins of almost everything, at the CORPS show in Richmond. After doing my due diligence on tobaccoreviews.com, I made a list of about a dozen to examine in person. After looking them over and sniffing them, this was one of the 4 or 5 that I requested samples to tryout.

All the earlier reviews are right on target. Plenty of vitamin N and a smooth easy smoke ending with white ash. I left with a 8oz tin and finally popped it and jared it today. Pure pleasure. I held off on STAR #4 only because I want to spend some more quality time with the blend before I move it to highest level.

This one is headed into my regular rotation.

I've heard the saying "C&D knows burley" and they proved that with this blend.

If you like a good burley then this one has to be on the must try list. Strong burley flavor with enough virginia to prevent any bitter taste. The perique was there but very subtle. More of a peppery mouth "feel" than taste. Enough nicotine to satisfy a former cigarette smoker with some to spare. Stays light easily and burns cool. No effort needed to smoke this one but plenty of old fashion tobacco pleasure.

A true "mans" blend. High in "N" but smooth. I find this better after a few months to breath ( bottom of the tin is best) and smoke this at a smolder. Burns very nice to a gray ash. Delightful with a cup of "Joe". Similar to Jackknife plug and Germains Brown Flake but not as sweet. The Burley is out front with this one, maybe a slight taste of Cigar leaf. I had this with my morning coffee and it felt like I had 3 beers for breakfast , watch the "N".

Updated 9/25/11 Well I've been told that Burleys don't age well and I have to agree. Tried this again after about 3 months of cellaring and all I got was smoke, no sweetness, no complexity, just a metallic burley taste. I've got to remove a star, totally uninteresting. Not only was this my first burley, but it was also the first pipe-full I had that really tasted like I was smoking a great cigar (but with a filter tip). While it is straightforward, I have yet to find a purer burley that is this sparse, yet complex and savory. I have found it smokes best in a straight group three billiard and that the cigar qualities come out the most in this pipe shape. Of course this is only my preference, and it consistently tastes outstanding in all my burley pipes of all sizes. I will add that this is a stronger nicotine blend, one I go to after work to unwind and collect my thoughts. Like other burleys and cigars, the sumatra earthiness and leathery flavors are there, which personally go very well with rye or scotch (which are usually the choice beverages to go with such tastes). Needless to say, this is outstanding burley; a must try.

The Burley Flake line by Cornell & Diehl is a treasure. It's the finest Burley I've ever tried. Generally, making straight Burley blends is a risky business; few producers cope really well with that. Burley tobacco easily gets bity or bitter or, otherwise, bland (like in celebrated Solani Aged Burley Flake, a favourite of many but not of mine). In the case of C&D, however, the result is stellar: all four blends are superbly balanced.

All four varieties deliver equally good healthy dose of Nicotine, while flavourwise they are not overly full (they shouldn't be: it's Burley). The flavour is rather thin-bodied, like the flavour of a light liquor (say, tequila) against dark spiced rum. Adding to the similarity with clear liquors, the Burley smoke, instead of flavour fullness, has unique sensatory qualities, unlike most other tobaccos. It's hard to describe the feeling, I just can say I love that soft alkaline "throat hit" when inhaling the smoke a bit.

===

Well, that was about the whole line. And now to this exact variety, the Burley Flake #3.

I find this one the tastiest of the four. Ingredients of the Blend #3 are pretty much the same as in the Blend #1 (Burley, Virginia, Perique) sans Kentucky. Apparently, the condimental tobaccos are added more generously than in #1, which may explain the richer flavour, with a rare hint of sweetness.

Great tobaccos. Try all four of them. You'll be rewarded with an experience you won't get with other blends.

I have now smoked all four of the Burley Flake variations and for my tastes and blending purposes, I rank them as follows: first BF#4 (its an English blend in it's own right), then BF#3, then BF#1 followed by BF#2 (this one gave me tongue bite).

This tobacco is almost good, but a bit too acrid with insufficient compensation to say so. Usually before I entirely give up on a tobacco, I give it some time in the sun, which I did with this tin. For me, the sun improved it enough to keep it around, though I have nothing against a dry tobacco. Cornell & Diehl are amongst my very favorite, but not this particular blend. I'd love for C&D to try something similar to Solani's aged burley flake, which for me is the golden standard of burleys. I wouldn't advise against trying it, but there'd be many ahead in the queue.

It has a nice earthy full flavor, I'd like to try it again, but I'll probably pick up a tin of one of the other burley flakes instead so I can try all three, plus this one was a bit strong for my normal tastes. I like Burley blends and this is one of the best. Has the great base notes of Burley - nutty - with hints of sweetness from the Virginia and a nice level of spice from Perique. Well balanced. Burns clean and does not get bitter at the bottom of the bowl. I like the flake presentation too. As with most tin tobacco, I left the lid off overnight bringing it to a moisture content I like. Along with Burley Flake #4, and MacBaren's London Blend, I am a happy camper.

It was not up until now(08:22 2010-09-03) I learned about the tobaccomanufacturors with the trade mark "CORNELL & DIEHL inc."browsing around in the site for pleasure and advise.Trough thorough investigation I found the apropriate merchant in USA and sent application and retail for a modest batch of some of their finest in stock.aaaaaaaaaaaaaathe tin with the four star brand "BURLEY FLAKE #3"caught my immediate attention for a direct survey.Soft and moist, somewhat spongy type of flake in 3mm slices perfectly packed with care in a common tincan, smelling of perique tobacco and the overwehlming cacao aroma from the burleytobacco....nice.I recomend a big bowl, this is one of the best burleys I ever have smoked.Clean taste of tobacco with the perfectly balanced addition of virginia and perique,an accentuation of the burleystyle tobacco that enhances itself very generously, with very small means indeed. This is a masterpiece.BF#3 is easy to tuck down in the bowl, needs a if not agressive so intensive lighting up,it is pretty moist though, but burns perfectly if you start it up with a real cloud. My new everyday choise besides "Brobergs Burley".

One of the things that attracts me to Cornell & Diehl is the rustic nature of their burley blends. Rather than smooth and balanced BF#3 is jarringly potent, rich, and rugged. The tin note has a ripe fruit aroma which very faintly appears in the smoke. The toasty and woody dark fired Kentucky is dominant in the flavor. There seems to be some white burley in here as well. The red Virginia is earthy and the perique offers a lot of pepper and spice. Jalapeño notes and a faint sweetness surface occasionally. Full-strength, full-bodied, and full-flavored.

Cornell and Diehl list Burley, Kentucky, Perique and Virginia as the ingredients for their Burley Flake #3. Having smoked it, although I can smell and taste all the listed varietals, I must say, here’s a strong blend for those who just can’t get enough Burley. Unless you’ve got a worse itch than mine, this ought to scratch it!

In the tin are perfectly moist, light to dark brown and red-brown broken flakes smelling of musty, earthy, slightly smoky, fermenting barley way over a sort of fermenting, dark fruit compote, mid-band but very deep, almost turgid, with notable sharpness and overtones. IMO, it’s easier and better after some rest and critical drying. For some time I loaded the chunky “ribbons” vertically into a #6 pipe and really took my time with it. Though it burned fine I often let it to go out, so as not to fall over from the nicotine. I came to realize that the “key” for me is not the size of the pipe, per se, rather I prefer it in a “wide-enough” bowl, with a very open draw, in order to burn a fair amount at once while keeping the velocity of air across it slow. This makes for great clouds of cool, highly flavorsome smoke. The sharp, musty, nutty, bitter Burley is on top, followed closely by slightly smoky, deep, tannic, fatty, piquant KY, followed by deep, sour, spicy Perique, with earthy, tart, stoved red and earthy, sweet, air cured brown VAs bringing up the rear. The lot is smoked, bitter nuts along with tastes of the tin notes, top to bottom, and though it’s fairly bluff and almost prickly it’s also very rich. A “trick” I quite like with this one: for the last 1/3 the tastes and aromas both have a sort of “bottomless” quality; very nice. All in all, this one is plenty saturated enough for me, so I have no urge whatsoever to pull for more. Strength is quite strong. Tastes are full. For all its strength, the room note isn’t so bad, really. Aftertaste is the best of the smoke. It remains full and rich as it lingers and loops back from Burley bitter to VA sweet, with most of the bitterness gone from the nuts

In case it’s not already obvious, I will say outright that BF3 is not for beginners or those who are fasting. I suggest to one and all to take it easy with this one until you get your bearings with it. This is a 4 star blend, for sure, but it won’t appeal to everyone, and the incautious may regret it.

Update, 10-12-19: During a recent bout of PAD I wound up with a beautiful, delicate poker that looks like a child's toy. Upon closer inspection, with thin chamber walls and greater depth than usual in proportion to size, I'd say it's close to a traditional #4 in capacity, and it's a terrific smoker. Smoking a load of BF #3 tobacco with this pipe brings to mind the little ray gun Will Smith used in the original Men In Black movie! This is Great Stuff, if you're prepared for it.

This is a very good blend. The burley is definitely the base here. However, there seems to be way more than just merely a dash of perique. It over powers the rest of the blend for me. I get it way out front with its spice and plum and fig notes (oddly no raisin for me). Under this I get the solid base of burley with a slight sharpness although this could be from the dark fired KY too. some earth, nuttiness, notes of chocolate that I expect to find in good burley and a subtle sorghum note. The KY has a woodsy note and adds strength to a blend that is more than strong enough. The VA's trail in the background but I can pick up a very slight citrus and hay note that is slightly sweet, although I would not call this a sweet tobacco by any means. The room note is tolerable for me but others are not fond of it at all. Nic hit is at the edge of strong for me but it is the overall the blend is that really places this in the strong category. If you like big blends this is a great one if you have trouble with the nic in Lane's 1Q this might not be the blend to try. This is a solid 3.5 out of 4 stars.

I have had my days with burley and some have been wonderful; the day I met this Burley was one of those days. This was a nice, strong, full bodied burley blend. I liked the smoke produced. I liked the tobacco flavor. I liked the restraint used when applying the perique. This came perfectly ready to smoke out of the tin and it lit well while smoking up the air around my head in a dreamlike cloud. The flavor, to me was a little harsh, but not too badly. A good blend to be sure.

Don't ask a boy to smoke a man's tobacco! Burley Flake no 3 is a man's tobacco and for the experienced smoker who enjoys a fair dose of nicotine. The tin aroma is very smoky, suggesting a fair amount of Dark-Fired Kentucky. The flakes rub out fairly easily and it smokes very nicely and evenly. The main taste is of tobacco, completed by the DFK and of unsweetened raisin that comes and goes throughout. An interesting change of pace, I am not sure if I will rebuy but I certainly appreciated the experience.

Another home run from C&D. Agree with most of the comments. I normally stay away from flake tobacco, I just don't want to bother with it, so I just cut the strips in small cubes with a pair of scissors, so its cube cut. A little too moist straight out of the tin however. I dried mine on a sheet of tin foil. For the burley lover without a doubt. The Perique was also very tasty and well done. Didn't taste alot of the Virginia however which was fine, the blend was mixed perfectly. I wished it came in bulk. I really can't say enough about the offering from C&D. My tin presented broken strips ~ 2" long that were easy to pack. However, in my view, the moisture content from the tin was too high and drying made for more consistent packing and allowed easier initial lights and prevented numerous relights. Smoked cool and smooth without any bite or condensation but I didn't sense much contribution from the Perique. I still prefer the taste of my straight VAs or Va/Pers but if you favor Burleys, this is a good one.

A very nice full flavored and full bodied burley. I usually avoid flakes as too much trouble, but this one is easy to handle. Comes a bit damp, but isn't a problem for me. I smoke the flakes as they come in a large bowled pipe. Just grasp what I think is the right amount and stuff it into the pipe, and trim the top. A little difficult to get going, but once it is, it just smolders all the way down, and is very cool burning. Puff it up a bit and experience the strength, but the nic is certainly not excessive. This is one I am going to keep on hand.

A lot of this blend's reviews liken it to Old Joe Krantz. I can see the comparison; I would liken this to OJK's older, more urbane brother. Despite the (justified) disclaimers about its strength, I would highly advise this to anyone who is Burley-phobic, as I once was. This is truly a celebration of all forms of Burley (DFK and Perique are Burley strains, after all), and its grand notes of oats, nuts, dark fruit, and black pepper leave one speechless with joy. So much so, I forgot to write a review until I had popped my third tin. Smokes dry and biteless (if your body chemistry prefers alkalinity), and gives regular draughts of mature, molasses-like sweetness. The one muddy cloud in this masterpiece landscape is the fact this comes neither in bulk nor 8 ounce cans. Because of the economics of small quantities, this is limited to a special-occasion smoke for me. However, I guess that's part of what makes it so memorable.

Burley Flake #3 - My tin was a little bit on the dry side but very smokeable and mostly broken or rubbed out already . Kentucky and Burley dominant with the Perique a strong condiment in taste anyway . Grassiness is about all I get from the Virginias it seems . It smokes cool and rich almost buttery . Nic hit is medium to strong depending on bowl size . This blend just lacks sweetness for me . I liked the #5 better and haunted bookshop even better . It needs more Virginias for me . If you like nutty burleys with a little molasses and a bit of cocoa with a little spice and fruity fig and raisons and don’t need sweetness this is your blend . 2 1/2 stars for me

The third of the bunch I've got to try. #4 being my most favorite and one of my Top-3 blends. Burley and Latakia works like a charm, how would it work with dark fired Kentucky and Perique? We'll see!

Intense tin note, with the Perique easily discernible. Nose tingling pepper, dark, stoved fruits, rich earthiness, and a hint of woodsy smokiness - really hearty aroma!

This is the strongest of the bunch so far, this is some after-meal smoke for me! #4 and #2 are quite strong, but can be smoked at any time of the day. #3 to me is the Nightcap of the bunch!

In the pipe you get the feeling there's more than just a splash of Perique! The Perique is everpresent, nose- and tongue-tingling, rich, slightly (pleasantly) sharp pepper and dark, stoved fruits such as plums, figs and alike. TPerique forms the "top-note" of the smoke and shines on the foundation of first class Burley goodness. Rich earth, a slight nuttiness, very tart and rich with minor sweetness. The dark fired Kentucky is a minor player, yet an important condiment, giving a full body to the smoke and enriching it by a whiff of smoiness, that pairs well with the Periques sour-fruity and peppery aroma. The Virginia adds a whiff of sweetness to round off the experience and outbalance the sheer untamed power of the ingridients.

Very nice smoke! Only had 1/4 of a 2oz tin, but I'll be buying a tin or two when I get the chance. Perfect after-meal smoke or the Burleys-Man Nightcap! Better than #4? Nope, by far not! #4 just works so frkn damn well for me, #4 is unbeatable for me I'm afraid! And yet another 4-star blend for its own merits! Very rich, very stout, nice exotic taste and all the ingridients in perfect balance and harmony. I'm excited how this'll compare to #1 (which I'll be getting a tin of soon), but until then: 4-stars, favorited and bowing down to the guys of Cornell & Diehl.... you know how to blend some Burley, thank you so much for all those delicate treats!

Tin notes of Rasin, dark fruit, and faint barbeque. The flakes are dark brown with a little black and slightly moist. Rubs out fairly easily, no drying needed. Burns somewhat slow with some relights. The strength is strong and nic is strong. No flavoring detected. Taste is full and a consistent beat down, with notes of very spicy cigar, quite earthy, dry wood, roasted nuts, overly toasted bread, dry bitter herbs, mildly sweet, mildly floral, mildly grassy, mild lemon, mild raisin and a very peppery retro. The burleys are leading a beatdown with perique and dark fired Kentucky actively participating. Virginias may not be actually throwing punches, but its supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is good.

Been looking for this tobacco but didn't know it. Strong, sour, fermented goodness... Like others, I found a way to have a second bowl as soon as I finished the first. Really enjoyed and will be putting some more aside even though I have promised myself I don't need any more tobacco in the cellar. Sour in a satisfying way, excellent tobacco flavor, very well put together. I think if I stumbled on C&D burley flake #3 earlier I might not own much else - generally enjoy flake tobaccos, VaPers, Virginias (occasionally English and Aromatics). Definitely scratches an itch.

I think I say this almost time I review a a C&D Burley but this blend just works better in a Cob. Although it's great either way. I like to really break the flake up which it pretty easy, and give it about 10 minutes of dry time. One thing that really sticks out to me about this blend is that is has a unique red pepper kick in the 1st half of the bowl reminiscent of the spice from a Pardon 1926 Maduro #6. In my book this make it a winner almost immediately. Aside from this wonderful pepper spice the flake deliver a lot of great unique flavors of wood, earth, hay, espresso, and a bitterness and sweetness combine to offer a fleeting cranberry note. The overall character of the smoke is dry. This blend does need some attention, and a few relights will be needed. But the flavors are so nice that it's worth the effort. It burns fairly cool with a moderate smoke output. No moisture in the bowl. I love strong blends and even I notices the nicotine kick on this one. It's not for the faint of heart.

After opening the tin I perceive a slight smell of vinegar with a typical balsamic touch of the perique that C&D usually uses in many of its blends, with some smoky notes. The tobacco comes with a degree of humidity that pulls to the low side and once the pipe is lit it burns evenly and well, without the need for many re-ignitions. The ingredients are very well blended and possibly in this regard it helped that the tin I smoked was five years old. It provides a relatively long-lasting smoke, without heating the pipe or biting the tongue at all, and this despite the fact that I've smoked it in a very light pipe that tends to get hot with a lot of tobaccos if not carefully handled.

Some reviewers here have mentioned that they see him a bit as Old Joe Krantz's soft brother. It is okay to try to make some comparison with another very popular and well-known mix so that people can get an idea of what they are going to find, always keeping in mind that the comparisons are not good or bad, but approximate. Perhaps due to the effect of suggestion, in the first puffs I smoked of BF3 I also found reminiscences with the aforementioned OJK, but it took me little time to find important differences. In addition to a greater smoothness in the flavor, BF3 also has, among others, some acid notes due to Kentucky, in addition to those already mentioned by other users, of cigar. Personally, I love the taste of dark fired Kentucky when applied sparingly, in conjunction with the other ingredients that make up this blend. It's a tasty mix and I think it can be smoked with gusto every day.

Nicotine is noticeable, especially in the intestinal tract.

I've been a Cornell & Diehl fan for a while now, and this blend reaffirms my enthusiasm for this brand. I find it incredible the amount of good and diverse tobaccos that they put on the market, being able to satisfy all the tastes of different pipe smokers.

Congratulations C&D!

Dominant burley with a Kentucky background that is very nice and noticeable throughout the smoke. . Hay like Virginia. I don’t detect much Perique . This blend is actually blended in a very nice proportion. The burley seems of great quality. The Kentucky note is not overwhelming but it’s strongly there. Virginia is not bright , and it works very well here for my tastes. I don’t find this to have the spicy thing going on like a lot of Kentucky blends. I don’t get any bite in this strong blend and it’s very nice and relaxing to sit and think while you smoke it.

The strength is nice for an after dinner smoke. It’s no flavor bomb, but it’s one of those natural blends that if you think about it while you smoke it, you can pick up the individual components pretty well.

Room note is strong and hearty and manly

Nic hit is probably pretty strong in this one and I really like that level in this. It’s satisfying to the nicotine guys , but it’s not a mike Tyson punch. It’s just jabs you real hard as you puff along , and suddenly at the finish you say, “yep, that’s enough jabs” ....

Highly recommend natural satisfying blend here

Update 12/19/19 I think I prefer this to old joe krantz. The last batch of ojk I got has a very very pungant, almost foul note in the tin and even smoking it. I’m not sure if maybe it’s a bad batch, but I open the jar and my family screams from across the room!!! And I agree with them. It’s foul..... but this is a similar blend to ojk but it brings it down to strong , not offensive. I’m pretty sure this is my replacement for ojk. Nic hit is very strong on this just like ojk, but I like the flavor here and the fact it’s a broken flake. Really good stuff!

The burley is pleasantly rough like a dirty cigar and given room to show off their earthiness by the other constituent tobaccos. I don't detect the characteristic nuttiness or cocoa in this burley.
