John Patton Virginia Squire

You will only like this tobacco if you buy it because you enjoy light blends. The manufacturer claims this is a robust smoke. It isn't. It's very light in flavor and strength. The woody burley is slightly noticeable, and adds a very light nutty, molasses taste. The grassy, tangy citrus sweet Virginias are extremely mild, and occasionally, there's a pinch of earth from them and the burley. A few flavors wax and wane as you smoke it. The strength and taste levels are mild. Has a very mild nic-hit. It's a very subtle, gentle tasting mixture that burns at a moderate pace, cool, clean and very smooth. No chance of bite or harshness, and requires few relights. Leaves just a little dampness in the bowl. The after taste and room notes are as gentle as the experience. An all day smoke, though it lacks enough depth to rate it higher. This is really more of a beginners smoke or a change of pace from heavier blends.

John Patton - Virginia Squire.

The blend's a bit of a mixture: ribbons, a few twigs, leafy pieces, and some on the cusp of being a broken flake. The majority of Virginia Squire is yellow and brown, but there are a small amount of black pieces. The pouch-note isn't reminiscent of a topping of any kind, it smells straight. The moisture couldn't be any better.

The smoke: firstly I can't comment on the DGT aspect as I rarely/never leave a pipe for long! There's some good points, and bad points; well not necessarily 'bad', more like boring points. The first thing to leap out is the thick, palpable, smoke, it generates a large quantity of smoke for a Virginia. The flavour from V.S. is mostly Virginia, there's maybe a few gentle Burley traits, but not enough for it to be categorised as a VaBur; in my opinion. I know tongue bite's subjective, but crikey, it's a whopper to me! The burn from it's one of the better points, but I want more than just a good burn from my blends!

The room-note's quite nice and the nicotine's mild.

Like I said, it has good AND bad/boring points.

When I look at the Virginia/Burley blends that rate well on this site, they're almost all very Burley-forward or knee deep in dark fired Kentucky. This is not that smoke.

Virginia Squire is a Virginia, with a touch of Burley in it to provide body. Ribbon cut with a few little nuggets of compressed leaf mixed throughout, it packs and smokes cool and easy. The added Burley gives just enough backbone to what tastes like more yellow than red Virginias.

Taken for what it is, it's an excellent smoke. The flavors are delicate, and won't in any way resemble Mac Baren's Navy Flake. Think in the direction of a more natural Dunhill Ultra Mild.

Some decent Virginias with not enough Burley for my taste. The Burley makes a weak showing toward the end. If you're a real Virginia fan you'll probably like this one. Nothing here stands out for me.

Mild to medium in body and flavor. Burns well.

What a treat this is. I'm discovering that I'm a fan of Virginias, and this one is no exception. The added White Burley really adds some depth of flavor and increases the strength a bit over Patton's Quadruple Virginia blend. Little to no bite at all, and a pleasant smoke any time of day. Of the four blends I've tried thus far by John Patton, this one is my favorite.

This is a Virginia blend in which has a good taste and burns nicely. I had filled a morning pipe and enjoyed this, I'm not a Virginia smoker in the mornings, but opted to try this blend with my morning java. The taste to me is very pleasant, with the "not bitey" Virginia tastes I usual experiance, good taste throughout the entire bowl. A blend which is worthy of the name.

Some decent Virginia leaf combined with a little burley to give it depth and backbone. It’s a weird cut, I think the chunky bits are in there to cool it off? It burns ok, nothing spectacular but not difficult either.

There’s no strength to speak of, it’s 90% VA after all. The little bit of burley isn’t going to turn this into a powerhouse any time soon. The flavor is light, pleasant, and unremarkable. The burley never gets that rich nutty flavor going, it’s outweighed by some fairly anonymous Virginias too much in the blend to do that.

I could recommend this to someone who is looking for a very light, low-nic, cool-smoking Virginia blend that’s easy to ignore. Maybe puff on it while mowing the lawn or some other light work, it’s not suited to much else.

This is a good smoke, but nothing to get too fired up about. The name and description had me anticipating something other than what I sensed. I had anticipated something more Virginia, but experienced something more characteristically Burley.

The Virginia, which I assume to be the same as that used in Quad Va and Cool Hand Fluke, is not as prevalent as it is in those two blends. I believe this is due to the Molasses topping (or Casing) that is clearly in this blend. The description notes a touch of White Burley. I wonder if the White Burley used is Uhle's Crushed White Burley, because the taste strongly reminded me of that blend.

I really don't know if it is that or if the whole blend is topped with molasses, but to my tastes, Molasses takes the lead which makes this more a burley blend than a Virginia Blend IMO thus my expectations not being met. Now don't get me wrong, I do like a molasses topped burley blend and some of them are my favorites. such as Stonehaven, RDF, DSF and DSK to name a few. Well, this is not one of those blends, but I did enjoy it and could easily smoke this all day long.

I am rating this at three stars, because I enjoyed it, it performed well and there were no issues other than the misleading name which resulted in no harm to myself.

This is a mild Virginia with mild flavours that is perfect for my first smoke of the day with my morning cups of tea. It's light with a slight tanginess. Mild nicotine. No tongue bite but two bowls in a row does start to tingle my tongue.

It's good straight but it's also a very good mixer to lighten blends that are too heavy or too high in nicotine for my tastes.

Three stars for a pleasant mild Virginia with just a touch of Burley.

This is a good straight forward Virginia blend with just a touch of sweetness possibly from the white burley. The pouch note offers a slight natural sweet but not cased aroma. Good moisture content.. packs well and only needed one relight.. burned down to a nice ash in the bottom of the bowl. If you like Virginia blends, you will want to try this one.
