Planta Anno MMVII (Black Mixture)
(2.96)
Black and mellow, aromatic and smooth, black cavendish with the aroma of thoroughly matured bilberries. Blended by hand in Germany.
Notes: Planta's Tobacco of the Year for 2007. Still available in bulk from a number of online tobacco sellers.
Some reviewers erroneously attribute the flavoring to blueberries, as bilberries both smell similar and are closely related to blueberries.

I'm convinced that you can not fairly review a tobac after one or two bowls. I feel you have to journey with it for a while. That's why I spent the day with this. I loved it! The room note is sweet but no so as a cased tobac. There's an earthy-ness to the experience... As I went to mid-bowl there was a nice uniform white ash and that also tells me you are getting a fair bang for your buck. (how much have we wasted in the bowl by not getting a thorough and complete burn)The unburned arorma is "odd" but you must not judge it by that. This is a tobac that you can spend the day with or use as an end of day smoke. If you respect the lit ash, you will not experience one iota of burn. This is a nice, nice discovery. I'm glad I found it.

You will hardly notice the sugary black cavendish as there’s little tobacco taste in this blend, The mildly sweet bilberry topping has a little richness, and it’s the reason to buy this product. The taste level is a step closer to medium than it is to mild. The nic-hit is fairly mild. Won’t bite or get harsh, but needs to be sipped a mite to avoid a little tongue warmth. Burns clean and kind of cool at a reasonable pace with a very consistent flavor from start to finish. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and requires slightly more than an average number of relights. Has a short lived, pleasant after taste, and is an all day smoke.

Planta - Anno MMVll (2007).
This was supplied in bulk, had a long journey across the ocean, sat in my cellar for a few weeks, and was still too damp upon opening. I don't think Planta are still making this so it must have been soaked at first if it's been a few years since it was made! Any-hoo, it's a coarse cut blend, mostly black, with a few browner pieces, and a strong aromatic pouch-note.
The initial part of a bowl: the smoke lacks the sweetness of most black Cav' aromatics. Where there would be a sweet flavour, if it were other berries, cherries, etc., there's a sourness. To me it resembles a bad blueberry flavouring: fruity, but a LOT more absinthal and sharp. After a quarter the causticity abates, giving way to a slightly fuller dark fruit flavour. It tastes a bit more amenable from this point. Decent enough, but I'd prefer a touch more vanilla from my black Cav' blends! It burns fairly clean, giving a cool smoke, and is bite free.
Room-note: pleasant. Nicotine: mild.
Anno MMVII. Somewhat recommended.
Two stars.

Finally, a black Cavendish that doesn't positively reek of vanilla...What a welcome change...Have been looking for a black Cavendish to add to rotation and this may be it...If your looking for a different and interesting black cav, give this a try...Don' think that you'll regret it.

HOLY BLUEBERRY BATMAN. This is like a super aromatic. This sucker is like aromatic squared. You cant get more aromatic than this. This tobacco is blueberry flavored, and that is an understatement. The tin description says it smells like blueberries and leaves a smell of blueberries lingering in the air. Here is how my tin description of this pipe tobacco would go:
"Do you want a blueberry dropkick to the face? Do you want your house to smell like a wildfire ripped through a blueberry patch for months on end? Do you want not only your pipe, but your house and even tamper to have a ghost that not even a full seminary of priests can exorcise? Then you need to try this tobacco!"
Seriously, not only could I smell this blend through the tin and through the box it was delivered in, I could smell the UPS truck turn down the street. The entire time I smoked this stuff I expected to blow up like Veruca Salt and have oompa loompa's dancing around me. ITS JUST TOO MUCH!
First this tobacco is not just moist, it is practically floating in the tin. After two days of airing it out it was still sopping wet. Oh well, it is what it is. Load it up and fire it up. It is kinda berrylike in the pipe but it has this weird sour taste. It is one of those tastes that I cant really tell if I hate it but I sure don't like it. As you can guess this stuff doesn't burn well, and it absolutely scorches your tongue.
On a side note, as we all know burning anything produces carbon, but burning this blend produces jam! Yup you heard me. After a full bowl of this foul stuff you can scoop the heel of your pipe out and find a goo that can only be described as blueberry jam?
Seriously it is nasty. Not recommended at all.

Probably the best of the Planta - Anno series. High in Cavendish the tin smells opened like a chocolate cake soaked in blackberry juice.. and that's what it smokes like. Rich and fruity and a nod of chocolate. Deep undertones of overly ripe, dark berries with sugar and chocolate sauce. Truly amazing aromatic. Probably the best tobacco I've ever had. Smokes cool. A churchwarden pipe adds a level of depth as it cools it down a few degrees. This would be the Macallan 18 (1987) scotch of tobaccos.
That being said, it's very strong in flavor and might put off someone not a fan of aromatics. This would be great for beginners who were interested in trying something decent other than Captain Black Cherry (harsh). It's very smooth and ages decently. It is a bit too fruity for most, but I love it.

As a pipe smoker I must defer to the nose of my wife as far as the room smell. She loves it. She will even come into my office to read telling me that she loves the small and it relaxes her. Taste? Great down to the bottom of the bowl. Nice white ash with no bite. A bit of a wet gobble in the bottom of the bowl, but after letting a bit sit out that was gone and I was able to enjoy the full bowl. All in all, a great smoke and very relaxing.

First let me say I like Aromatics so I have no bias against them. This blend is very aromatic, in fact so much so that one cannot taste the tobacco flavor at all. It smells like Blueberrys, it taste like them, the room note is of them, and after you smoke it your pipe is like them. Aromatic overload! Top that off with the fact that this one tends to smoke hot on the tongue, and is hard to keep lit, I can only say that I won't be buying anymore of it. It is a dark black brown cavendish style tobacco, rough cut flakes and is very moist and takes a long time to dry out to where you can keep it lit. I bought it as bulk and not the tin and the pouch aroma does smell good. After letting it sit out for weeks, it became dry enough to smoke but still moist. My room where I dried it out smelled great, I think I will put some in my car to make it smell nice. Once I loaded up the pipe, it took several lights to get it going, and I have to relite several times to get to the bottom of the pipe. I tried different types of tobacco loading in several different pipes and this was consistant in all of them. Now the room note was very pleasant, though somewhat overwelming. My wife said she could smell me smoking it while I was out on the porch and her upstairs in the house in a far room. Wondered what I was cooking. Taste wise, it is very rich and fruity, you do get the blueberry flavor. But it too is overwhelming, it's all I could taste and smell. It burns down to a black and grey ash and leaves some dottle in the bottom of the pipe and leaves the pipe damp in the heel. This is an interesting smoke that I can only recommend to heavy aromatic smokers.

This is a good tobacco to scratch that aromatic itch I get every now and again. I don't favor aromatics, but like to keep a couple of the better one's around in a decent quantity to have a nice flavorful bowl every now and again.
I agree that there's not a lot of tobacco flavor here. It's mostly a roasted berry sweet flavor, and a lot of it. It tastes like a blueberry muffin with all blueberry. I like the black cavendish rough cut. It burned well for me, not any tongue bite. It's a little damp, but it almost seems like they really went heavy with the flavoring and that's it.
This lands as one strong aromatic and is unique in that it is a natural great tasting blueberry. If you'd like to smoke a blueberry muffin every now and again, this is your man.
