Sutliff Tobacco Company Blacksburg

(3.00)
A tantalizing blend. An all black of "steam sweated" fire cured tobaccos hauntingly flavored with fig, prune and rum notes.

This is by far the dryest Black Cavendish I've ever seen. Dry in the pouch and dry in the pipe, so lock & load, it's ready for you! Like Count Pulaski this blend is a real stand out amung the Altadis brand, which does'nt get a lot of love.(rightfully so) They say there is a fig and rum flavoring which I really can't identify as such. To me, this is just simply a flavorfull, sweet and clean burning Black Cavendish...Excellent!!!

Sutliff Tobacco Company - Blacksburg.

It might be badged as being a ribbon but my blend's a coarse cut mixture, without a doubt. On the plus side the moisture's perfect, on the negative side it includes some very big twigs. The rum monopolizes the unlit aroma.

In the smoke the rum gives sweetness, but hardly any alcoholic sharpness. The plums and figs don't get pushed aside, but accompany the rum well. Overall there's just enough sweetness to add character without seeming gloopy. The fire curing separates this from being the usual 'sticky vanilla' tasting black Cavendish blend, by giving it a slightly smoky character. A bowl burns without drama, but when pushed can become too warm. Warm, but bite-free.

Nicotine: mild. Room-note: pleasant.

Blacksburg? I'll give it two stars; not my type of aromatic:

Somewhat recommended.

All I can say is I lit this and I was astounded! It tasted wonderful and stayed that way to the bottom of the bowl in my falcon. An all black, dark, and rich looking blend with a long wide ribbon cut. I lit it and it stayed lit. It was the perfect moisture. I thought I was smoking a blend from McClelland or Dan as it was great quality. It has a sweet/sour smell in the pouch and when lit it has a sweet, rich and creamy flavor with the fig/raison taste coming out but not too strong. This blend stayed tame and never grew bitter or had any tongue bite at all. I am really impressed with it and I am a burley smoke normally. I will be ordering a pound of this as it is a great blend and if you like aros, I highly recommend this.

Black, flavorful cavendish with a fruity boozy taste. Not an overpowering aromatic. Not wet and goopy like so many blends of this genre. The toppings do not mask the tobacco flavors in any form and fashion. I get some sweet grassy nuances of Virginia and a bit of earthy nutty taste of Burley. Smokes dry and has consistent flavor throughout the smoke. One of the better, albeit lessen known aromatic blends out there. All day aromatic blend for sure. Plan to lay more of this in as it it a fine smoke indeed! Solid 4 in my humble opinion.

Gave this one a shot solely on the prior recommendations. Usually Altadis blends scare the heck out of me but it's certainly cheap enough and what the hell. You know this stuff ain't half bad. Very light aroma in the pouch maybe some of the rum but not much else. No sicky sweet , goopy mess here. Lightly sweet with none of the individual flavors that you can really discern. Maybe some of the rum and a little of the prune kind of but thats it.They sort of meld together into a pleasant taste and nice aroma. Not much real tobacco taste here maybe a little of the burley. This mixture will heat up your pipe a bit but never your tongue. Smokes dry and actually leaves a pleasant taste in your mouth afterwards. I was looking for a decent change of pace over my usual straight Virginias and that is exactly what I got. Much better than your normal Altadis messes.

Pitch black, rough cut cavendish and burley blend, I personally cannot pick out which leaf is which. If I have inhaled a better pouch aroma, I don't know when! The Plum and fig are really discernable without much thought. When inhaled deeply, a slight chocolate note is also detected. I don't notice the rum as much in the pouch note as some, even when fresh.

With the choppy cut of this blend, you owe it to yourself to break up the large bits for ease of packing and evenness of the burn. This blend ships a bit moist, and expands quite a bit under fire, so pack lightly.

Initial lighting takes several attempts. Even then it doesn't produce much volume of smoke.

I tired this blend is quite a few different shaped pipes. They all produced the same uninteresting results. Its a run of the mill sweet but airy cavendish blend that doesn't impress. Some of the plum and rum peek through, but the effort you must go to find it, just isn't worth it to me. I'll let the remainder of what I have dry out a bit and try again at a later date.

I like almost all styles/types of tobacco. Lately, I have been trying several Sutliff aromatics to satisfy my occasional sweet tooth.

Blacksburg is kind of bland. If you are looking for a super-flavorful aro, this is not it.

But it is pleasant and burns pretty well. For those looking for an aromatic that doesn't have truckloads of flavor, this would fit the bill.

Having said that, I won't order it again. When I smoke this style, I prefer more aromatic notes.

Govern Yourself Accordingly.

Dark in color, mild in taste. You know how a lot of the Altadis blends, particularly the aromatics are really wet and sticky - well this isn't. It burns dry and consistent throughout the bowl. It has a nice flavor, not overpowering, or overly sweet - just right. If you have been burned (both literally and figuratively) by aromatics in the past (especially Altadis blends) I recommend you give this one a try. You will be pleasantly surprised!

This was a pleasant surprise. I picked up some during a sale and was not 100% expecting a winner.

When I saw the black flakes I was worried this was going to be the normal "goopy" aromatics that I dislike. However the moisture content was good straight from the bag. The bagnote was rummy to me. Easy to pack and light.

The smoke comes across to me as rum + fruit. It's consistent through the bowl. The toppings do not allow a lot of tobacco taste so it tends to be a little monotone to me but consistent.

No bite. Will burn hot if over pushed but easy to keep undercontrol even with my normal "fast" smoking. Nicotine seems really mild and I was able to smoke multiple bowls in a row without issues.
