Tin Aroma: This blend has one of the most appealing tin aromas I have ever encountered. It reminds me of my mothers kitchen, laden as it is with vanilla, sugar, and spices.
Physical Characteristics: A short to medium cut ribon burley. A light to medium brown color. Packs like a dream, smokes easily, and leaves a dove gray ash.
Notes: Burley, Burley, Burley! I love Burley, and this is probably my absolute favorite burley blend. Good thing I can get it at the drug store for about $$6.00/lb 🙂 I love this in almost any pipe, but in a corncob, it becomes one of the most sublime of all my smoking combinations. As a matter of fact, it is singlehandedly responsible for my discovery of the corncob as a wonderful pipe. There is a wonderful blast of sweet burley flavor upon first light. Soon after these first few ecstatic puffs, this blend settles down into a wonderful, slightly sweet, mostly nutty smoke that does not require full attention in order to reap giant rewards. Excellent with a glass of iced tea (thats sweet tea for all you non-southerners), outside anytime, day or night. The bottom of the bowl becomes slightly more nutty than the beginning, but never does it exhibit the feared burley end-of-bowl ashy taste. I usually get one final blast of sweet burley smoke right before it goes out, though why, I am not sure. This is not only a relatively inexpensive blend, but would also serve as a wonderful introduction to the world of burley tobaccos. I have experimented a bit with blending this blend with other blends to see what it goes well with. It pairs well with 5-7% perique or 15-20% bright virginia. I have yet to find a latakia or oriental blend that matches well with this, but you really should try the burley/perique blend. It is sublime.

This might be a good tobacco if it weren't for the mass amount of PG in it. It's soaked in the stuff. I've been leaving it in an open bag out in the sun every day and it is starting to get better. This wet stuff always bites me no matter how slow I smoke it. I'm going to just let it sit in a mason jar for a long time after I dry it out some more. I may have to use this for blending instead of smoking it straight. There's just no reason for me to ever buy this again considering how inexpensive Prince Albert is. I just wanted to try it as that's part of the fun of the pipe hobby. I love trying the different kinds of tobacco just for the fun of it.

Simply put, it's burley with what would be just a very light touch of flavoring that gives it a somewhat spicy note. It is also marketed at Walgreens as "Blender's Gold Golden Burley".
If it weren't for the extreme amounts of humectant used in it's processing, it would be a decent aromatic for the price.
I'm leaving the lid off of the humidor and we'll see where that takes it.

This is also sold as Dream Castle Tobaccos' "Admiral's Choice" Gold Burley My sample is from the 8oz bag..
Upon opening the bag I find an all brown ribbon cut burley..the cut isn't a perfect ribbon though..some of the leaves just look like they were torn up. Smells ok & I detect some kind of topping. Whatever the topping is it is lightly applied.
Packing: Packs easy. It arrives somewhat moist, but by no means wet, and this seems to facilitate the packing.
Lighting & Smoking: Takes to flame easily. Quick tamp & relight and thats it. As for the smoking, this blend just leaves me flat. It doesn't taste bad, it's just very plain. Again, whatever its topped with doesn't seem noticable in the smoke. I suppose every once in a while I get a nutty burley taste..I think. Smokes cool & dry anyway.
Finish: Burns down with little remaining dottle..slightly ashy tasting finish. Room note seems unoffensive.
Pros: Its cheap..at 5 & 1/2 bucks a throw..may have use as a blender? Tone down a bitey VA? Cons: It has no taste!
I doubt I will ever buy this again..Hell..I doubt I'll ever finish the 8oz's I've got.. 2 of 4..just too plain

It all happened on Christmas morning when I received a new Peterson under the tree from Mrs. Claus. I was visiting my mother and father, some miles away from my home, and was anxious to try out the new pipe.
CVS, being the only shop opened, did not have anything that sounded remotely pleasant. I couldn't even find Prince Albert. Much to the annoyance of the clerk I stood across-counter for 15 minutes trying to decide on a tobacco. Gold burley was the pick.

This gooped up my pipe, robbed me of a little Christmas cheer in my heart. Fortunately, the birth of my son, Loki, had occurred one month before Christmas. It took me just a quick glimpse at him and my cheer was restored a hundredfold!

I bought this mail order as Consolidated Gold Burley, bulk. I am sure it is the same blend as in the drug stores less possibly some additives.
This is a fine burley blend along the lines of BLWB, but perhaps a little stronger and better tasting.
It's main drawback is the humectant makes it burn a bit wet. Some people may also object to the very slight Vanilla and spice casing as well, but I don't find it intrusive. It's not a full aromatic Vanilla at all, but a gentle hint, and really I'm guessing at Vanilla, it's that subtle.
Otherwise this has everything I look for in a burley: nutty, buttery gentle sweetness and decent strength. It's better than the Prince except for the wettish burning qualities. No bitter or ashy taste even on relights or DGTs.
This is plain, wonderful ice cream and pretends to be nothing else. It doesn't bite. It doesn't have Cavendish so it's a real burley not a hybrid. It has no funny off tastes (like some Pinkerton products can for instance). For all these attributes, I'll give it the full four stars.

While I enjoy a good Burley blend, and even a straight Burley, this stuff is not my cup of tea. I did want to like it, owing to the nice reviews it has received, and tried it in a variety of pipes. The flavoring agent is simply too sweet for my taste, and I found it cloying.
I much prefer Prince Albert in the line of inexpensive Burleys.

I picked up a 12 Oz. bag of this stuff at a pharmacy. It was all of $9.99. It has a nutty scent, with hints of hay.Just plain old tobacco. It was quite dry, but not too. It packed easily, and stayed lit fairly well for me. It truly does have a nice, warm nutty taste, very like peanuts, with buttery undertones. I puffed away merrily, and true to the packaging, it smokes cool and dry, with no bite. I like burley, and for the price alone, this was worth a shot. A good simple, no frills tobacco.
CVS now sells this in 8oz bags under the Admiral's Choice name. It will set you back about five and half dollars.

After reading the reviews here and hearing about this blend from friends, I had to give it a try. I was very pleasently surprised with its toasty, buttery, creamy and nutty flavor and aroma. This is smooth as silk and bite free. I have purchased this in a 12 ounce bag at Walgreens under the name Golden Burley and at CVS under the name Admirals Choice Golden Burley, both at a low price and readily available.
This is a simple no frills burley, easy to get, very affordable and just darn good in cob. With so many positives it earns and deserves 4 stars!

I hesitated at buying a pillow-sized bag of cheapo drugstore tobacco, but burley is what I sought and that's what I got. Not much to add to the above, but I'm kissing off the boutique blends (except for Barbary Coast, of course). Simple is good. I can't taste any flavorings: this is jus' plain ol' geezer cob fodder. It makes me want to play checkers and tell lies about the good old days. It won't impress the image-conscious, but it did me.
