Emerson Southern Forged Red Castle
(3.00)
Red Castle has FIVE Red Virginias, Stoved Red Virginia and unsweetened Black Cavendish, all of which make for a tastefully integrated pure Virginia blend that lingers on the mouth with a very pleasant room note.
Notes: ESF never includes sweetening agents unless they are specifically mentioned as an integral part of the blend or as an option; propylene glycol is not used as a carrier for flavoring agents. The goal at ESF is to provide a custom alternative with consistent, repeatable performance, to the discerning pipe enthusiast. Pressed if requested. We try to create blends that captivate your attention, take time to unravel, and take you on a journey. Custom blend requests are welcome!

As many people know, stoving is done post curing. The tobaccos are cooked (often steamed) to caramelize the sugars in the leaf which changes their character.
Red Castle is a blend containing five Red Virginias, stoved Red Virginia and unsweetened Black Cavendish. The latter is important as most Cavendish receives an additional or artificial sweetening agent. Often the ‘carrier’ for the sweetening agent is prop glycol.
Here we have a straight Virginia blend in which the blender, Jim Steffey, is using leaf without un-mentioned casing or topping. The addition of unnamed sweeteners is common in the industry. Jim is a boutique blender and has chosen to keep his blends closer to pure, using art and craftsman skill to bring together a delicious VA blend.
RC has a toasty, grassy flavor and a pleasant room note. It’s a good marriage of flavors. Perhaps not too complex but elegant in its simplicity. This is a good blend for lovers of Virginia leaf.
3 stars.
