Emerson Southern Forged Aberdeen
(3.00)
Aberdeen is a blend containing Latakia, unsweetened Red and Cavendish Virginias, Izmir, and long cut Perique. This is from the Blue Label series – mild English blends with interesting taste profiles, though Aberdeen is arguably more moderate in strength. The Izmir adds spice and the Perique a bit of raisin and the Virginias add a sweetness to the mixture.
Notes: ESF never includes sweetening agents unless they are specifically mentioned as an integral part of the blend or as an option; propylene glycol is not used as a carrier for flavoring agents. The goal at ESF is to provide a custom alternative with consistent, repeatable performance, to the discerning pipe enthusiast. Pressed if requested. We try to create blends that captivate your attention, take time to unravel, and take you on a journey. Custom blend requests are welcome!

Aberdeen is an approachable, tasty mild English blend with not in your face Latakia, and good unsweetened Red and Cavendish Virginias. It also has Izmir and long cut perique.
The Latakia is present but not overwhelming. The Izmir adds that bit of spice, and the Perique that bit of raisin which to me comes across as mildly sour.
The Virginias are delightful.
Jim Steffey is a masterful blender and committed to not using prop glycol or casings of any kind. Aberdeen is a great blend for the newbie to English or Balkan blends or for anyone who wants a milder example of a boutique blender’s version of a good English.
I prefer my blends from Jim to come pressed into a puck. They all come in a small ‘mason-type’ jar.
3 stars.
