Sutliff Tobacco Company Pipe Force Episode VI

(4.00)
A woody, tangy mixture of select Virginia leaf is elevated with Stoved Katerini, adding dark berry and spice. Dark-Fired Kentucky and St. James Perique enrich the base with earthy notes, pepper, and a light smokiness. Episode VI is a savory, vinous evolution from the natural sweetness and dark flavor of the Virginia/Perique genre. Richness with nuance all the way down.

Well Specialist Falfa would on casual observation seem to be a very visually oriented sort of a fellow but has a very fine taste in smokable vegetation from the Terran word commonly known as Earth. His choice is a very flavorful blend of several varieties of tobacco native to that world that have been processed in some very specific ways to bring out a rich, nuanced blend with various notes but a definite solid character with serious substance.

In basic terms it’s a crumble cake based on Virginia leaf tobacco, but not just one type nor is it just Virginia! There is some red with its touch of vinegar along with others that yield citrus, sugar, grass, wood and earthy notes. It makes for a solid base that the other Terran herbs enhance and join with in a pleasant alliance. Katerini is an Oriental leaf but in this usage it has been stoved which shifts its flavor profile from the herbal end to the spice and dark fruits range with some smoke and a smooth incense and it slightly leads the rest. Dark Fired Kentucky adds its solid smokiness and bbq flavor with some peat and nuttiness from its burley heritage. The next player brings the earthy spice, pepper, figs, dried fruit and a bit of floral nature that Saint James Perique is known for throughout the galaxy.

The end result is a very enjoyable complex flavor that is balanced and easy going as it will not bite or burn hot but it is no lightweight in that’s strength and nicotine levels are both on the solid side. It burns slow and rewards with sweet and sour flavor well seasoned with herbs and spice, fruit, bbq, and for lack of a better term a unique umami flavor to the bottom of the bowl and lingering after taste. The mouth feel is medium but satisfying. I dried mine briefly and it burned well with a few relights. Not quite an all day smoke but will keep you company on watch or help you relax in your recreation period.

Four out of four for me and strong with the force!

The Perique is outstanding, full and well rounded, and at an ideal percentage where it’s present but isn’t overwhelming anything else going on in the smoke. That’s true of all of the components. The real star to me is the Stoved Katerini. It adds an additional dimension to the Perique that fits perfectly. Some berry type flavors show up that are really fun. The dark fired Kentucky is at just a level to add fullness and body to the smoke. The excellent Virginia is a great match to everything else going on. I find this to be a sophisticated blend. A strong four stars.

The flavors hold up consistently through the bowl from start to finish. Above medium overall strength, nicotine at a satisfying just above medium level. I couldn’t detect or discern any added flavors. The room note is very nice to me, no idea what a non smoker would think. Smoking hard or fast will cause one to miss a lot of the wonderful aspects of this blend. It turned out to be more than I was expecting by a stretch, plus the one big eyeball guy on the front of the tin is cute.
