7-20-4 Dexter’s Secret

(3.00)
A generous base of Cyprian Latakia is expertly layered with Virginias and Burleys, spiced with genuine St. James Perique, and then carefully pressed and cut into flakes. The result is a truly refined English-style blend with notes of cream, smoked mesquite, and hints of citrus, with a rich fig-like sweetness on the finish. A versatile medium-bodied blend that can be enjoyed with your morning coffee, at the end of the day with a dram of your favorite whiskey, or anytime in between.
Notes: This is the third of five special blends that constitute the pipe tobacco extension of the historic 7-20-4 cigar brand.

The musty, leathery, sweet Cyprian Latakia provides a wealth of smoke, earth, wood, herbs, vegetation, floralness, and light spice as the lead component. The plummy, earthy, woody, figgy, mesquite-like, lightly sweet Saint James perique offers secondary support rather than full support. The earthy, woody, nutty, sweet burleys are a couple steps above the condiment line. The Virginias produce some tart and tangy citrus, grass, bread, sugar, floralness, very light dark fruit, earth, wood and a pinch of spice. They are just behind the burleys. The light creamy sweet notes probably come from a casing. The strength is a notch past the medium threshold. The taste is a slot past that mark. The nic-hit is a rung below the overall strength rating. No chance of bite or harshness, but there are a few rough edges, which is typical of blends in this genre. The broken flakes are mildly moist and require no dry time. Burns cool, clean and slow with a very consistent smoky sweet, floral, spicy, mildly fruity, nutty, mesquite-like, savory campfire flavor that extends to the pleasantly lingering after taste. The room note is quite pungent. Barely leaves any dampness in the bowl, and requires some relights. Not quite an all day smoke, but it is repeatable. Three and a half stars.
