Pouring from a simmering pot of Louisiana Coffee, flows an intricate roasting of cappuccino-spritzed Virginia and a strapping coffee-infused Burley. Moreover, this lively charged Paul’s Pipe Shop brew lends a steepening accommodation of a well portioned share of the stellar Arrowhead that mixes in the enhanced complexity of Green River Black Cavendish, flaked Virginian, Perique, and a dash of smoky Latakia. Implicitly lacing this southern styled java, this involved recipe comes stylishly embellished with a gentle vanilla dressing and of course that secretive fruity-boozy element that is characteristic of Paul’s original creations.

To look at this bulk packaged aromatic, it would not be a far stretch in suggesting that Louisiana Coffee resembles the nice ground coarseness found in a bag of Seattle’s Best. If blindfolded, to the touch this gritty dry pillowing of interesting tobaccos might be easily mistaken for the very same. Paul’s collection of mixed and jagged shards, fragments, and nibbled pieces presents an exceptionally dark casting of deep rich browns, golden reds, excessively “stovey umbers” and coal black tinted morsels. And as one sinks a probing nose into the depth of this contained concoction, a sweetened aroma bringing an ensemble of raisin bread, chocolate, and vanilla are starken by a resolute coffee air. These colorizing elements float assertively over a thickened stirring essence of native wood, citrus tang, bright tartness, and a definitive pong of aged earthy funk. No question as to the pending liveliness that will soon follow with smoking.

Overall, I have to say that I soon discovered that there is never a dull moment smoking this concoction. For a shelf aromatic there is nothing remotely typical in its registerable character. The abundance of movement within the experienced taste profile is nothing short of entertaining if not truly impressive. Simply, this tobacco is distinguished by an unremitting run of colorfulness engendered by the respective coatings themselves and the challenging encounter of the nuanced breadth of all the resident native strains.

Although the design of this blend primarily seeks to feature the confluent and undulating excellence of its top-coatings, Louisiana Coffee naturally imparts a dark, moody, and heavy native feel given the presence of the bolder tobaccos contained within. By comparative analysis, if you have ever smoked Warped Scarecrow with its potent complexion, then you will come to appreciate the feel of Paul’s singular aromatic offering as it carries the same brave weightiness.

And in generalizing the smoking experience further, the basis of the profile roots committedly with a stronger preference to the influence of the Burley first and then the musty Perique. Even still, well-crafted balance is supported given that the coatings themselves render this notable deepness of character with a flavorsome complementing of alternating seasonings and garnishing sweetness.

In being wise about the wits, at first light, it is best not to let this Louisiana Coffee catch you napping, as you are about to be fast animated by a smart five alarm “coffee-esque” blast. Mainly, a powerful beckoning of tangled top dressings launch full on to enliven your sloth-like senses. Coming together is a celebration of the sugared grainy spice of a rum raisin flavored glossing fused with the stout impression of the starring coffee-based additive that shines brightly with pleasing conviction.

Moving decidedly forward within the taste sphere, this formable coffee note projects a medium roasted character that entertains some buttered toasty nuttiness decorated with a stronger bitter dark chocolate accenting, much like the bullish finesse of a dense heady espresso. Some chicory-oriented magic at foot here, one must wonder. Yet, peacefully softening these excited annotations is a doting creamy and milky caramel-centric cappuccino note and melted vanilla. And finally, there is a hit and miss fruity notation that records with an attractive orange-like demeanor.

It is the all-powering sour-toned Burley that occupies superior footing, riding wide and fat in the prime middle of the taste characterization. As standard, this strain demonstrates its dominance with a push of bolder earthiness as if it were perhaps raw and uncased. The general flavor, however, is formed by an arousing herbaceous wood and tinge of candied nuttiness. Calming this darker facing is a pleasant accenting of sugary molasses and a consistently vivid minty wave providing a softer contextualizing effect.

Just as one begins to revel in the appeasing savor of this Burley proudness a buttressing thrust emitting from the Acadian leaf manages to swell up and jump into the forward mid-bottom stream. Offering a clean tracing of musty pungency, the Perique adds further depth with its dark prune sweetness, bringing a condimental bump of subdued peppery spice that modestly sensitizes the full nasal cavity. In combination these two varietals serve well to kick down the general jolting theme of the blend that is certain.

Circulating in the outer upper perimeter, the Latakia functions as a contained tertiary element in the overall scheme of the taste profile. Although the presence is a perceivable reflection, positioned more remotely, its lessor impression lends the envelope of melded flavor with a compulsory taunting of relaxed smoky incense and sweet fustiness, which generally enhances the degree of Louisiana Coffee’s satisfying charisma. And regarding the Cavendish in this foray, its familiar natural earthy persona is well absorbed within the delectable fusion only surfacing with an occasional hint of seasoned charred woodiness.

On the lower tier, Louisiana Coffee’s baseline persona is formed by the addition of the assorted Virginian. In the main, these elements coalesce to render a peaceful relishing of balancing under-support. Although more passive but no less flavorful, their influence builds the bottom registration with an amalgamation encompassing a lighter citrus, tangy “floralness”, and fermented rustic nuances selectively painted by a finishing accent of sugary doughy bread.

With its expenditure, Louisiana Coffee produces bountiful thick and beefy plumes of white-gray smoke carrying a powerful essence as one should naturally anticipate. The room essence is marked with a faithful sweetened smell of toasted Burley embellished with wisps of musty pithiness, tarty citrus, and the residual staunchness of a fully brewed/burnt coffee. Evidence of the sweet additives do surface nonetheless, of which the raisin tainting seems to be more evocative in the depositing. This tobacco is perceivably “okay to tolerable” for non-pipe smokers I would genuinely assume, but vastly savory to us enthusiasts most assuredly. What is more, the room essence is tenacious in its permanency, wanting to maintain the strength of its smoked imprint for an extended period.

In closing, I must confess that I did find the blend to be a little “bitey” on the mid-tongue as the noticeable stomping of the Burley came into action. However, if sipped slowly through a cob, this tobacco can be a relaxing and compelling alternative given the availability of aromatic choices. With good burn properties and moderate nicotine residuals, Louisiana Coffee is yet another inspiring and delighting Paul’s original that is most definitely worth thoughtful consideration. The final takeaway being, a coffee that avails itself with the subtle influences of chicory, all points being considered, may be just fine by the end of the obliging cup. 3.4 Pipes .
