Hearth & Home El Nino Reposado Limited Edition
(3.00)
Reposado is a new approach. This blend of toasty red Virginia and Perique is enhanced by a bit of unflavored Black Cavendish, dark-fired Kentuckey, and a whisper of Latakia. The blend is then aged in a tequila barrel to imbue the tobacco with a synergistic aroma.
Notes: Russ Ouellette. the creator of the Hearth & Home Marquee Series loves to pick apart flavors and he noticed when trying an aged tequila that it had a subtle hint of tobacco flavor. That got him thinking about what we could do with that revelation. When we were able to get our hands on a recently decanted tequila barrel, he produced a plan. He took one of the more nuanced Marquee blends, El Niño, and had it packed in the barrel to steep in the essence of the spirit. Now we have an already flavorful blend that's enhanced by tequila flavor without having to add any liquor to the blend. It's subtle, a little tangy, a little sweet, and a real treat for people who prefer blends that are "outside the box." This run was limited to less than 1800 tins, so pick some up before they sell out!

The Virginia provides some tart and tangy citrus, grass, earth, wood, bread, sugar, mild darker fruit and floralness as a team player. The dark fired Kentucky offers plenty of smoke, earth, wood, floralness, vegetation, some herbs, nuts, sweet and sourness, barbecue, and spice as a co-lead. The musty, leathery, mildly sweet Cyprian Latakia produces a fair amount of smoke, earth, wood, vegetation, herbs, floralness, light incense, and a pinch or two of spice. It’s a couple of steps above the condiment level. The earthy, woody, raisiny, plumy perique has a few pepper notes in the background. The rich tequila tones down the tobaccos a couple of notches above what I would consider to be moderate. It seems to reduce the presence of the Virginia more than the other components. The strength and taste levels are medium. The nic-hit is a step behind that mark. No chance of bite or harshness, and has few rough notes. Deeply rich and well balanced, it burns cool and clean at a reasonable rate with a very consistent sweet, floral, herbal, mildly sour, nutty, spicy flavor than extends to the pleasantly lingering after taste. The room note has some pungency. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. Not quite an all day smoke, but it is repeatable. Three and a half stars. I gave three stars to the original version.

Let me start out by comparing El Nino Reposado to the original El Nino. I have a tin of each. They’re both open and I’ve been smoking them on and off for a couple of weeks.
The tin note for the original is earthy and sour. The tin note for Reposado is sweet maybe a little fruity. I don’t know if I can really say it smells like tequila, for me it’s kind of similar to some drugstore or over the counter tobaccos.
Both blends are ribbon cut tobacco mostly browns with some black. Reposado has a little more moisture than the original El Nino, but it’s still ready to smoke and stays lit without any pipe gurgle.
When I smoke the original El Nino I get a definite VaPer with an underlying dark-fired Kentucky flavor. Not so with Reposado. The tequila barrel aging process seems to mellow and meld the tobacco flavors together where they’re less distinguishable from each other.
I can taste the tequila, especially on the retrohale. The tequila, for me, is not your typical tequila flavor as in a shot of tequila. It's kind of a sweet, creamy, buttery, and even a little plummy kind of flavor similar to Mac Barrens Plum Cake. It’s not a heavy flavor like a typical aromatic. There’s also some spiciness probably from the Perique or the DFK. The best way to describe Reposada is sweet and mildly spicy, a kind of a mild aromatic.

Tin note of sugared raisins, sharp sour and smoky spices. Tobacco is a ribbon cut of yellowish tans, light browns, dark browns and black. Moisture content is ok, some may want to dry it a bit. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium and nic is medium. Flavoring is medium, with notes of tequila. Tequila seems to tone down and enhance the experience, strong at first and in the background for the remainder of the bowl. Taste is medium and mostly consistent, with complex notes of sugared raisin, savory, wood, spices, stewed sweet fruit, lemon grass, black pepper, nutty, sweet bread, earthy, floral, sour vinegary, orange peel/zest, peaty vegetation, a tart and tangy citrus background note, and a moderately peppery retro. Virginia is leading with Perique, Kentucky and Cavendish supporting. The Flavoring is supercharging the blend. Latakia is supporting in spirit. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is awesome.
