Watch City Cigar Old North Church

(3.50)
An old venerable blend preferred by Bostonians for years is here recreated from a jar of the original purchased in the early 90's. Many different grades of rough, pebble and Crumb Cut Burley are cased with molasses and extracts of plum and blended with just enough latakia to cool the blend and give just a hint of smokiness. This is an all day comfort smoke and a true old time codger Burley!

Old timey? Maybe in some sense (there used to be more blends of this ilk). Codgery? No. Rich and easy going, the topping is present but not cloying. Pipe tobacco. Burley, some latakia, some sweetness. This is very pleasant.

The various grades of crumb cut burleys provide plenty of earth, wood, nuts, mild sugar, and a slight sharp and spicy savoriness. A few pinches of Cyprian Latakia offers exceptionally mild smoky mustiness, woody, earthy, floral, herbal, vegetative, sweet and slightly spicy qualities. Its effect continually underscores the experience far in the background. The rich plum casing is a little more obvious than the molasses. Very light anise is present, too. The casings mildly tone down the burleys as they help form a very synergistically consistent nutty, rather sweet, lightly smoky flavor with a little depth. The strength and nic-hit fall a step short of the center of mild to medium. The taste just edges past that center. There’s no chance of bite or harshness. It does sport a few very light rough edges. Burns cool, clean, and a tad slow with a short lived, very pleasant after taste. The room note is a touch stronger. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires a couple more than an average number of relights. A comfortable all day smoke in the tradition of old school blends. Three and a half stars.

Absolutely delicious old school codger style burley blend. Cool burning and mild though rich in flavor. It's the curse of my love of pipe smoking that I prefer burley but do not love heavy nicotine and here I have found deep burley goodness with a mild nic hit. Ernie Q is a master(genius) of these burley blends and this one is exceptional even among all of the other great Watch City blends.

Bag note is a mild aroma of cocoa woody nutty burley with a hint of molasses and smokiness. Hodgepodge of pieces of tobacco which are fun. Not sticky or overly moist. Just perfect.

The smoke is woody, nutty, a little hint of leather smokiness. Burns well. The mouth feel and flavor is on the mild side. It’s not a sweet blend and the Latakia is just a pinch. Feels like stepping back in time smoking this one.

Burley tobacco for me anyway can sometimes be sharp and unfortunately this one is. I did find that this blend performed better for me with a 9mm coal filter. Not to say that it isn’t a fine smoke.
