Erik Stokkebye Small Batch Peaty Kentucky

(2.67)
A limited offering from 4th Generation, Erik Stokkebye's Small Batch Peaty Kentucky is a rope-cut blend composed of 100% mature, whole Virginia leaves and dark-fired Kentucky. This hand-rolled mixture uses the whole Virginia leaves as the wrapper and the dark-fired Kentucky as filler. The ropes are aged for several weeks before being sliced into perfect coins. It's a satisfying blend that provides a pleasant balance of strength and smokiness, and comes neatly presented in a collectible, special-edition, humidor-style box.

To me, this was a bit of a disappointment.

The presentation is wonderful: wonderful coins in a little wooden box, with a strong tobacco smell and a good moisture level.

At the start of the smoke, the Virginias add some grassy taste, and even a bit of a sweet citrussy note. Unfortunately, this quickly disappears.

After that, I found it to be a bit too one-dimensional for my liking. A woody, earthy, peaty flavor with quite a bit of nic strength. I had hoped for a more complex flavor profile.

Some people might really like this one. If you're looking for pure tobacco flavor and satisfying your nicotine craving, this might be right for you. Myself, I think I will try adding an occasional coin to some other blends to give them a bit more oomph.

The dark fired Kentucky provides a lot of spice and pepper, earth, wood, floralness, smoke, mild nuttiness, vegetation, light barbecue, and a few sour notes to go along with some sweetness. It’s the lead component. The Virginias that comprise the outside of the coins offer some tart and tangy citrus, grass/hay, bread, vegetation, some sour lemon, earth, wood, light tangy dried dark fruit, spice, floralness, a few grains of sugar, and a slight undertone of acidity. They are important supporting players. I get a very small sense of a slightly sweet maple casing. The strength and nic-hit are a couple of steps past the medium mark. The taste level is a slot past that level. It won’t bite. It does sport some rough edges, and fast puffing may result in a little tongue tingle and/or small abrasive harsh note because of the high spice/pepper content. I suggest a slow puffing cadence. The slightly moist coins easily break apart to suit your preference, and require no dry time. Burns clean, and moderately cool at a lightly slow pace with a consistent, mildly sweet and sour, rather savory, very spicy/peppery flavor that extends to the lingering after taste. Barely leaves any dampness in the bowl, and requires some relights. The room note is a notch stronger than pleasant. Not an all day smoke. Not quite three stars.

Out of the box, a tightly twisted rope. Darker in color in the middle and lighter on the outside. Of course, as all have said, way to much emphasis on presentation & appearance. But, the tobacco is very pleasent to look at which does lend to some excitement of what is to come. I feel many of rated lower because of cost and over extended presentation. I wonder if that is a fair analysis of the tobacco. Overall, it was a good/very good smoke.

Tin Note: Simplistic. Virginias. Very slight smoky hints. Grassy. slightly sweet. Slight citrus. I almost, at first, wondered if it was topped...but definitely not.

Smoking: Started out pretty monolithic. Rough retro-hale. But simple grassy citrusy virginias. Not much to bock at. Was hoping for more Kentucky in my peaty kentucky tobacco. As the smoke continued a lot more started to come out for me though. There were a few moments in the smoke that I had a very forward bbq/smokey flavor come through. Those Kentucky hits were pleasing and but caught me off guard for how absent they seemed mostly. The virginias really developed nicely. Became very sweet & layered in flavor. Towards the end everything was quit uniform. The kentucky was present, the virginias were present. Everything molded into a very enjoyable experience. In retrospect I can see how each bowl of this could be different from the last. The blending in the rope is pretty sporadic. But, in the end the retro smoothed out. The flavors smoothed out. The flavor developed very well. I was very much enjoying the last third of the bowl. This is not worth the $30 price tag though. I hope the blender/seller sees all the comments about that...get rid of the boxes and fancy packaging and tin a tobacco that people can boast about from start to finish. I've seen a number of youtube reviews that comment on the "made in china" stickers...for me, wanting to build the U.S. economy, this certainly doesnt give me warm fuzzies. But, its a danish blender...I can't bock at were they get their packaging materials from.

Room note: not much to be said here...my cats ended up in the other room. Not sure what that tells you.

In the end, I would say, if you have money to throw at this, go for it. Otherwise, maybe look for your kentucky fix through another source.

Montgomery on steriods.

Discs pack and burn easily. On dry side. Not sweetened.

Flavor bit citrusy but ramped up with Kentucky. More of a plain, natural Flavor. Ready to smoke upon opening. Not barbecue taste as old dark fired.

Not too spicy until bottom.

Package fancy but not for term storage.

Recommended for those who like rustica, silver flake, etc.

I found it to be even more disappointing for a number of reasons. Taste-nothing great, nothing terrible. But for $28 plus tax plus tax it is very disappointing. Nice box. I actually got #1/2500. But it’s a wooden box. Not airtight like a tin. So i couldn’t put it away to age if I liked it and wanted to. Dry as dust. And Peaty? Sure don’t know how that applies. There’s not peat alla a scotch. The name is very misleading. Not worth the $.

The presentation is great, the outer cardboard cover (with the warning labels) means that the presentation box itself is label free. It's sealed with plastic wrap not like a tin. The small box is supposed to be a humidor, will keep it fresh if you are careful to keep it closed for a limited amount of time. Not for long-term storage.

The coins are very similar looking to the MacBaren coins such as the recent vanilla roll or Three Nuns. Most of the coins have light wrapper (VA) with dark centers. A few of them are lighter than others. The "box note" to me is earthy with a little grass. They are dry enough to smoke without drying. I fold them up in the bowl with one shredded on top to allow for lighting.

Smoking I found that the VA wrapper sweetness seems to carry through the blend. The KY centers add some nuttiness to my taste but not the "Bold" flavor say of Old Dark Flake. It's a pretty consistent smoke bowl to bowl, but will change a little depending on the make-up of the flakes you choose.

It's a good smoke with a decent nic kick to my tolerance. I usually smoke it in the evenings paired with some bourbon or rum. It's not exciting enough to be an all day smoke and honestly it is too expensive to do that with anyways.

Much like going to a bar and getting a shot of some top-shelf bourbon, this one is not something that price-point wise (even if not a limited edition) would be in my regular rotation.

I ordered this the day it came out. Fresh out of the box it is very dry. Coins have a nice presentation. You can pack it tight accordingly but it is still a fairly quick smoke. . Taste is of a pure, natural one. No toppings, a bit earthy. Uneventful retrohale. No bite. A decent smoke but not very interesting.

I will put my wishes of what this could have been into the pretty presentation box it arrived in...right before I pitch it.

Erik Stokkebye - Small Batch Peaty Kentucky (4th Generation).

I know a few people weren't amused by the price, 24 USD for 50g. But in the UK some blends are 18.99 GBP plus postage so it isn't too unusual a price to us Brits!

The coins are fairly uniform, but not too perfect. Think of a slightly tidier version of a Mac B Roll Cake. The pieces are medium brown flecked with lighter birds eye's. The moisture's good; perfect to smoke right away.

In the smoke I get an earthy, woody, lead from the Kentucky. It offers a lot more of the herbaceous qualities than it does staunch smokiness. The Virginia feels a good distance behind. I get a fresh, hay-like nuance, but I don't get citrus, fruit, or 'zest'. To me the Va is more of a platform for the Kentucky. Mechanically it's faultless; steady burning, mid-temperature, creating a 'dry' smoke.

Nicotine: healthy. Room-note: not great!

Peaty Kentucky? Remarkable. Highly recommended:

Four stars.

Peppery? A touch of mesquite? yes. Spicy? maybe. Peaty? not as such. Overall, a very nice VA/KY combination, with coins that actually hold together until you are ready to either fold-&-stuff or rub-out (unlike my experience with most other coins/roll cakes, etc.). A solid 'recommend' for the blend, but not worth the premium price for the packaging/limited edition. If this cost the same and was as available as blends like 3 Nuns Green, I'd rebuy.
