Motzek Kieler Freu(n)de "Alte Hasen"
(4.00)
A fully ripe Plug from robust flavor, mild cigarish aroma and powerful bloom. Various Virginias, Orientals, perique and some black cavendish are processed by pressing and and maturing into a feast for friends and experienced gourmets of full-bodied plug tobaccos.
Notes: The name "Kieler Freu(n)de Alte Hasen" translates as follows: It's a pun: "Freude" means "pleasure" and "Freunde" means "friends". So it's Kiel is the City the company is seated. "Alte Hasen" means "old stager"/ "one of the old school".
After being unavailable for 2 months, it was re-introduced with a "refined recipe" in September 2017

This easily broken apart plug is in three layers, and as such, how you prepare it will determine the order and effect of the tobaccos you taste. Top and bottom layers have tart citrus, grass, tangy dark fruit, and earthy Virginias along with dry sour, mildly floral, cigar-like and buttery sweet, woody, earthy, Orientals. The center is dark and contains brown sugary black cavendish and very fruity, raisiny, plummy, spicy perique. I also detect a little maple sugar, and hint of vinegar and salt. Overall, the Orientals take the lead with the perique and Virginias being supporting players. The strength is medium, while the taste is a step or so past that. The nic-hit is almost medium. No chance of bite or harshness, but it does have a rough edge here and there. Burns slow, cool and clean with rich, deep, sweet, savory and lightly sour, but at times, inconsistent flavor that translates to the lingering after taste. Leaves little moisture in the bowl, and needs a fair amount of relights, unless you shred the tobacco, which I do not recommend. Not an all day smoke, but it is repeatable.

(For german readers, I have a review about this tobacco in german on the blog I'm writing with a fellow pipe smoker: http://tabak-pfeife.com/index.php/tabak/sonstige-tabak/26-motzeks-alte-hasen-plug )
"Kieler Freu(n)de Alten Hasen" was introduced in March '17 if I recall correctly, along with "Hallo Twist". And both are masterpieces, made from, and around Perique and Oriental leaf!
First thing to mention is the outstanding look of the plug. It has three stripes layered. In the center a totally black core, which is the Perique and I think the Black Cavendish is also spun into it, as there's no other black spots in the plug. The upper and bottom layer are from bright brown, with golden dots to medium brown. Not as dense as Salty Dogs Plug f.e., but not as loose as JackKnife Plug as a comparison
Taking a sniff on the plug reveals only a very decent scent of cigar-ish and ethereal Oriental the typical Perique fruitiness with minor sourness to it. It comes perfectly conditioned and is rather on the dry side compared to other plugs. It can be smoked rightaway.
The taste is oustandingly good for me! A rich cigar-like aroma is the main player, which I assume comes from the Orientals? Herbal, ethereal, cigar-ish, richly earthy and woodsy. Very nice taste. The perique sports some fruitiness and tongue-tingling pepper. The Virginias are mildly sweet and the smoke is rather spicy and tart. The Cavendish is a chameleon and I don't perceive it too much, albeit the smoke having a slight toasted note to it. Not overly complex but with nuanced depth and really unique in taste.
This is as natural as pipe tobacco can be. Even if Tom Darasz (Head and master blender of Motzek) wouldn't have told me that they only use natural things (Salt, Sugar, Water, Maple-Syrup, Vinegar, heat/cold to flavor and prevent mold. No chemicals added at all!) to process their tobaccos I would've guessed this is most natural pipe tobacco.
Alte Hasen shares similarites with "Acadian Perique" by Mac Baren, but just slightly. Acadian Perique also holds dark fired Kentucky, and definetly less Perique than "Kieler Freu(n)de Alte Hase". But they somwhat live up in the same alley I'd say.
4/4 stars and I'd give more if it were possible. This is a very unique tasting plug to me and has a nice spicy charme.
