Motzek Latakia Cake
(3.50)
What a cake! Scent of hop, malt, tart-spicy leatheriness, delicate sweetness. Characterful Virginias, fully-matured latakia (20%), supplemented and rounded by nutty burley, aromatic perique, some black cavendish and a pinch of Orientals. Pressed and matured the flavors melt into a smokers delight!
Notes: The TAK Latakia Cake deserves its name. When opening the bag comes to the clear smell of smoky latakia countered, accompanied by something which is probably the most accurate with "hopfig, malty".
As the name says, the tobacco is pressed under high pressure and added heat to a cake. Before, cut tobacco (no whole tobacco leaves) is tuned and mixed with each other. This results in a much looser consistency than a plug, which makes it much easier to use. Nevertheless, pressing is a miraculous process, and this results in a very harmonious result.
It consists of a neat portion of Virginia, and an equally orderly portion of latakia. Add to this our characteristic perique, a bit natural burley, and to round it off, a little of pinch black cavendish and Oriental.
To make the tobacco "ready to smoke" it is enough to loosen it between the fingers. If you want, you can also get your plug-knife to cut the tobacco from the block.

The grassy, citrus and dark fruity Virginias also have a little earth and floralness, and form the base of the blend in a support role. The smoky, woody, lightly sweet Cyprian latakia is a team player despite its presented amount. The natural burley is a little nutty, with hints of toast and molasses, as it plays lightly below the level that the Virginias do. The perique is a tad more than a condimental addition, and offers more plum than raisins and spice. The dry, floral, woody, slightly buttery sweet Oriental lurks in the background. A little pinch of sugary black cavendish helps to smooth out potential rough edges. The nic-hit is just past the mild to medium level. No chance of bite or harshness even when pushed. The product is produced in an easily broken apart cake form, burning cool and clean with a very consistent, nuanced flavor from start to finish. Leaves just a little dampness in the bowl, and requires a few relights. Has a pleasant, lingering after taste and room note. Not quite an all day smoke.

A wonderful Krumble Kake! Despite the name "Latakia Cake" it's no monochromatic Lat-Bomb! 20% of Latakia make the Latakia just noticeable enough, giving its signature smokiness and woodsy, creamy, salty and spicy character.
The unburnt aroma reminds me of a bulked up version of Tom´s Plug with more Latakia. Both have this fruity-sweet and hearty aroma, whilst Latakia Cake also has an obvious smoky side to it. A broad mixture of various tobaccos, which make for a diversified smoke with depth and charme.
In the taste the Latakia is easily noticeable, yet far from burying the other components. Its delightful, unobtrusive smokiness and salty, earthy spice takes a small lead over the fruity and sweet nuances. A whiff of black pepper is also present in the spice. The burley is present throughout the bowl, and gives a earthy body as well as mild nutty notes that harmonizes ecellently with the ffruity and smoky-spicy characteristics. The Orientals aren't very present, so is the black cavendish. The latter may give a hint of toasty sweetness and the Orientals may contribute to the nutty and woodsy-earthy nuances. A pleasant interplay of spicy and sweet and whilst it starts out more fruity-sweet the spice and smokiness intensifies throughout the bowl.
All in all it has a nice depth to it and a very balanced taste-profile. Fruity, smoky, sweet, earthy, woodsy, nutty... slightly toasty... it has it all and is blended perfectly into a delicious Krumble Kake, that'll not only appeal to the seasoned smoker, but may also be a great itroduction into the world of Latakia-Blends!
