I am an Aussie living and working in Thailand. I picked up the pipe about 4 years ago, but still consider myself very much a beginner.

UPDATE: I am an Aussie now living back in Australia with my wife and daughter. I have now been smoking a pipe for 9 years! I don't know what made me pick a a pipe in Thailand those years ago, but I am sure glad I did. I think I have learned a bit over the years and have become a better pipeman, but it sure does take some time. One would think that putting some tobacco in a pipe and smoking it would be pretty much straight forward, but I would say that it is only in the last year or so that I have really begun to get the most from my pipe smoking. It really has only been in the last 12 months that I feel that I can pack a pipe - take into account different tobaccos and different pipes - well. I know that I have still got a way to go - and I am happy about it!

When I first began pipe smoking, I picked up some Brebbia pipes that seemed to me a very good choice for a beginner. Recently, I have added 4 Savinelli pipes, a Ben Wade (which I love) and lovely Peterson pipes. Sourcing pipes and tobaccos is not easy here in Thailand. I have been buying my pipes and tobacco from 4noggins.com in Vermont. Quick, easy, takes only 5 days to get to Thailand - don't know why I didn't think of that a lot sooner!

UPDATE: Still get most of my tobacco from 4Noggins and have been for almost 9 years. They do a great job of shipping to Australia. I also pick up some pipes and tobacco in Japan as I travel there quite often. I now have a collection of about thirty pipes. I have a great pipe from the Japanese pipe-maker Jun'ichiro Higuchi; I also have a Winslow billiard that I picked up in Japan. I obtained from Great Estate Pipes on Ebay a Northern Briars, VERY large, 3/4 bent shaped by Ian Walker that I absolutely love ... and I love pipes and tobaccos!
