About Me

As of the summer of 2023 I’m about ten years into pipe smoking. I quit smoking cigarettes after 45 years in December of 2019. My sense of smell is a bit wrecked after two bouts of Covid. But here I am — I still love pipe smoking and hope I never have to give it up. My preferred blends are English and Balkan but I’m a big fan of PS LBF as well and I have a fair number of aging Virginias in my so-called “cellar” (a cabinet off the kitchen that my wife has good naturedly allowed me to commandeer). I don’t really smoke aromatics at all but I’m not a snob about it and will happily smoke a bowl of Lanes 1-Q (or equivalent) if someone is offering it. Finally, I live in Canada where my government (led by a party I used to support) have legislated that all tobacco products must have a drab green packaging (as if teens would be taking up pipe and cigar smoking if they were in nicer packages) and where, consequently, many pipe tobacco products are unavailable. I suppose companies who make interesting tobaccos in beautiful tins just don’t feel the need to change their production lines for the 100 or so pipe smokers it seems there are in this country. As a result, most Canadian pipe smokers order their tobacco from American sites and then pray they aren’t hit with crippling duties at the border. It’s a tough life I have, admittedly, but worth it. 🙂
