I have been a pipesmoker since 1970 when I bought my first pipe, just after going into the U.S.A.F. I never smoked cigarettes, but enjoy a nice robusto cigar from time to time.
My first pipe was a small GBD billiard, which I took with me overseas in 1970. Subsequently purchased Peterson's System pipes which I continue to enjoy. I have a very eclectic collection from clays, both short and long; meerschaum, smooth and carved. I enjoy Danish pipes as well, and have recently purchased a Japanese Tsuge bamboo which I like very much. For me, the appropriate pipe is dependent on my mood, surroundings, and the tobacco. I enjoy english blends with Perique. Fairly regularly I enjoy the Orientals, Samsun, etc.
