The original blend in G.L. Pease’s New World Series, JackKnife Plug is a rich and smoky pipe tobacco blend. Dark Fired Kentucky and Virginia are blended together and pressed into 2 oz. cakes, then left to mature. Slice it into thick pieces and rub it out to produce a ribbon cut for your bowl; or maybe slice it thinner for shag. Whichever you prefer, this rich and ever-so-slightly sweet blend will please you in ritual as much as in taste.

    Very nice

JKP - a popular favorite amongst the Virginia burley crowd. I prefer G.L. Pease blends over quite a few others, even some of the more popular ones. This one is no exception. If you don't mind the preparation your in for a treat. If you don't care for plug prep, try the ready rub version...

    G. L. PEASE JACKKNIFE PLUG PIPE TOBACCO

Posted by Aaron A on 16th Feb 2021

Jackknife Plug is solid tobacco in all fields. It has a wonderful natural taste and can grant you a cool smoke as well. This tobacco is indeed quite strong which is something that is a positive for me but may not be for others, so beware of that. Overall, this was a great purchase and a perfect addition to the collection, I would recommend.

    GL Pease Jack Knife Plug

Excellent! Prepared by slicing very thin, no more than 1/16-1/8 inch then leaving on the desk for about 30 minutes. Rub out then pack. Started with a Legend cob on this but now using a medium billiard briar. It’s semisweet from the virginia with a background of kentucky that reminds me of farm bread crust. An excellent smoke.

    Not my cup of coffee.

Man, I really wanted to like this... Straight out of the tin, it looks awesome and smells like an unsauced barbecue. Preparing it was a bit tricky - it’s a bit on the crumbly side but doesn’t crumble like a typical cake, it just breaks off into irregular leaf pieces. It had me wishing I had a pastrami slicer or a mandolin or something. I didn’t get any of the fruity or other notes other reviewers have described. Definitely a lot of woodsy/smoky flavor... but not in a way I liked. Smelled and tasted like a burning field - both the smell and flavor reminded me of an old cigar. It might be a good choice for those moving from cigars to pipes but just didn’t suit my palate. Both bowls I’ve tried smoking have been knocked out and abandoned about ten minutes in.

    GL Pease Jack knife plug

This is easily one of the best tobacco blends I have ever smoked. It is full flavored but creamy, buttery smooth and never bites. The Virginia's are the dominant player here with the dark fired adding some depth and smokiness. The flavors are more on the bready side, similar to a buttered croissant, with some fruitiness like apricot. It is mildly sweet but never cloyingly so. This would be an all day smoke but it does pack a nicotine punch that will sneak up on you and knock you on your butt. It seemed to me to be very high in nic so If you love nicotine then you will fall in love with this blend.

    Horrible

Wow, I must have got a bad batch or something. The taste was horrible. I get nothing that others have described. Was really looking forward to this, very disappointed.

    It'll blow your hair back!

The last thing I remember after the charring light was sitting on the riding mower after that it's just a blur. The wife said she found the mower in the woods behind the house and me hiding under the kiddie pool in the backyard. The tin aroma is that of ribs in the smoker. This is a rich hearty manly smoke. Proceed with caution. :-)

    Fantastic

Posted by Eric J. on 17th May 2018

I'll start this review by saying that this is the first true plug tobacco I have ever had. The plug was/is absolutely a beaut, and the smell is like no other tobaccos I have had before. Almost an oily, smoky, rich brownie. I was a bit apprehensive as to cutting and preparing it, but, I followed Peases's own advice and cut it into a shag. After gently rubbing it out, I let it air dry for about 30 minutes. After that, it was perfect to pack and light. Right off the bat, it's smooth and yet powerful. The Dark Kentucky makes itself known, and it literally gave me a charge. I don't usually notice the effects of Vitamin N, but this had the roof of my mouth buzzing a bit. After the charring light, this burns like a champ with the relight. It produces a heavy, rich, billowing smoke, and has an intoxicating smell during the burn. Tamps well too. I would highly recommend this blend.

    Strong Stuff!

Posted by Adam Valleau on 6th Jun 2017

I have to say this blend will bowl you over! I wasn't sure, at first, if I liked this blend. It's almost too strog for me... almost. Must be the Kentucky. The flavor is good, but very straightforward - not complex at all. Definitely smoke this after a meal. I think I'll get to like this more as I work my way through the tin. Only reason I gave this three stars and not four is due to the strength. Almost overwhelming for my taste. But, if you like powerful blends, try this. It is very good quality tobacco (does Greg use any other kind?). Cheers!
